The History of Labour Day?
The origins of Labour Day globally trace back to the Haymarket Affair in Chicago (1886), when workers protested for better working conditions and an 8-hour workday.
Following this, May 1st became recognized internationally as International Workers' Day or Labour Day, especially among socialist and communist movements.
Vietnam first observed Labour Day in 1930, during the period of French colonial rule.
The day was celebrated by underground labor unions and revolutionary organizations, especially following the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam (then the Indochinese Communist Party) in February 1930.
During the 1930s and 1940s, Labour Day in Vietnam became closely associated with anti-colonial struggles. It was used as an opportunity to mobilize workers and farmers to support the fight against French colonial rule and later against imperialist forces.
After the success of the August Revolution in 1945, which led to the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), Labour Day became an official public holiday in the North.
Following the end of the Vietnam War in 1975 and the reunification of North and South Vietnam, May 1st was declared a national public holiday across the entire country.
In recent decades, while state ceremonies and recognition events continue, Labour Day has also become a time for relaxation and travel, especially since it falls right after Reunification Day (April 30th).
