The History of Independence Day?
Turkmenistan became part of the Soviet Union in 1924, known as the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic (Turkmen SSR). For nearly seven decades, Turkmenistan was governed as one of the fifteen Soviet republics, with limited political autonomy.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Soviet Union began to collapse, with political reforms fueling independence movements across Soviet republics.
Following the failed August 1991 coup in Moscow, republics across the Soviet Union declared independence, including Turkmenistan.
On October 27, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of the Turkmen SSR officially declared Turkmenistan's independence from the Soviet Union.
This historic day marked the birth of the sovereign state of Turkmenistan, ending nearly 70 years of Soviet control.
Turkmenistan held its first Independence Day celebration on October 27, 1992, marking the first anniversary of independence.
Originally, Independence Day was celebrated every October 27. However, in 2018, the Turkmen government changed the holiday date to September 27 to better structure the national holiday calendar.
