The History of Independence Day?

In 1884, Germany declared Togoland its protectorate during the "Scramble for Africa". Togo became known as a model German colony, with infrastructure developed primarily for export.

In 1916, after Germany's defeat in World War I, the League of Nations divided Togoland into British Togoland (later integrated into Ghana) and French Togoland, which remained under French control.

French Togoland was administered as a League of Nations mandate, then a UN Trust Territory after WWII. During the 1950s, France allowed limited self-government under pressure from independence movements across Africa.

In 1956, a referendum gave French Togoland autonomy under French oversight.

On April 27, 1960, France granted full independence to Togo, and the country became the Togolese Republic. Olympio became Togo's first president in 1961 after the country adopted its own constitution.
