The History of Independence Day?

After World War I, the Ottoman Empire, which had ruled Syria for centuries, collapsed. Syrian nationalists declared independence, and King Faisal I briefly ruled an Arab Kingdom based in Damascus.

In July 1920, France invaded Syria and defeated King Faisal's forces at the Battle of Maysalun, establishing the French Mandate for Syria.

From 1925 to 1927, a widespread uprising against French colonial rule, involving rural and urban populations. Though the revolt was suppressed, it fueled nationalist sentiment and is remembered as a pivotal moment in Syria's struggle for independence.

A 1936 Franco-Syrian Treaty promised eventual independence but was never ratified by the French Parliament. During World War II, Syria came under Vichy French control, then was taken by Free French and British forces in 1941.

In 1941, General Catroux of Free France proclaimed Syria's independence, but the French military presence remained. After years of Syrian diplomatic pressure and international support from newly formed United Nations, France agreed to withdraw.

On April 17, 1946, the last French soldiers left Syria, completing the country's journey to full independence.
