The History of Independence Day?

In the late 19th century, Samoa became the subject of international rivalry between Germany, Britain, and the United States.

The Tripartite Convention of 1899 formally divided the Samoan Islands: Germany took control of Western Samoa (now Samoa), while the U.S. took Eastern Samoa (American Samoa). From 1900 to 1914, Western Samoa was a German colony.

During World War I in 1914, New Zealand forces occupied Western Samoa, and it was later administered by New Zealand under a League of Nations mandate (and later a UN trusteeship).

This period was marked by growing resistance, especially after the devastating influenza epidemic of 1918, which killed over a fifth of the population. In the 1920s, the Mau movement rose as a peaceful resistance against New Zealand rule, demanding self-determination.

Persistent activism and international pressure gradually pushed New Zealand to support Samoa's move toward sovereignty.

On January 1, 1962, Samoa (then known as Western Samoa) officially became the first independent nation in the Pacific Islands. A Treaty of Friendship was signed with New Zealand, recognizing Samoa's sovereignty while maintaining close ties.

Although Samoa became independent on January 1, the celebration of independence was fixed on June 1, which has since been observed annually as Independence Day. The choice of June allowed for more favorable weather and aligned with Samoan cultural calendars.

Independence Day is Samoa's most significant national holiday, marked by flag-raising ceremonies, parades, traditional dances, speeches and feasting.
