The History of Independence Day?

Independence Day in Antigua and Barbuda marks the nation's achievement of full sovereignty from the United Kingdom in 1981. The path to independence was a gradual process shaped by centuries of colonial rule, resistance and the determined pursuit of self-governance.

Antigua was colonized by the British in 1632, and Barbuda followed in 1678. For much of their colonial history, the islands' economy depended on sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans. Even after the abolition of slavery in 1834, economic inequality and limited political rights persisted. Over time, the rise of trade unions and the Antigua Trades and Labour Union (ATLU), founded in 1939 under leaders like Vere Cornwall Bird Sr., became pivotal in advancing workers' rights and political representation.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the islands gained increasing autonomy. Antigua became part of the short-lived West Indies Federation (1958–1962) and later formed an associated state with Britain in 1967, which allowed for internal self-government while the UK retained responsibility for defense and foreign affairs.

By the late 1970s, the movement toward full independence gathered momentum, led by Prime Minister Vere Cornwall Bird Sr. On November 1, 1981, Antigua and Barbuda officially became an independent nation within the Commonwealth, with its own constitution, national symbols, and government. The day marked the end of over 300 years of colonial rule.

Today, Independence Day is celebrated with flag-raising ceremonies, parades, concerts and cultural showcases that highlight the twin-island nation's heritage, resilience and unity. It serves as a powerful reminder of the country's journey from colonial subjugation to national pride and self-determination.
