Heroes' Day Zimbabwe

Heroes' Day in Zimbabwe is a national public holiday that honors the liberation war heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives during the country's fight for independence from colonial rule.

When is Heroes' Day?

Heroes' Day is a national public holiday observed on the second Monday of August each year.

The following is the list of Heroes' Day from 2020 to 2049.

The History of Heroes' Day?

Heroes' Day in Zimbabwe was established to commemorate freedom fighters who played a crucial role in the country's liberation struggle, particularly during the Second Chimurenga, which is the war of liberation from the 1960s to 1979.

Heroes' Day is meant to honor:

Combatants from liberation movements such as ZANLA (Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army) and ZIPRA (Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army);

– Supporters and civilians who assisted fighters or perished during the war;

– In recent times, notable post-independence contributors in public service, education, and civil rights have also been recognized as heroes.

Zimbabwe gained independence from British colonial rule on April 18, 1980. Shortly after, Heroes' Day was formalized by the new government to ensure that the sacrifices of liberation war heroes would be remembered by future generations.

The National Heroes Acre in Harare was constructed with North Korean assistance in the early 1980s as a symbolic and physical resting place for the most revered figures.
