The History of the Day of La Rioja ?
The first Day of La Rioja occurred on October 8, 1978 in Nájera. Organized by the "Coordinadora por la autonomía de La Rioja," it was a grassroots act to assert regional identity. In the years that followed, pre-autonomy Days were held alternately in Haro (1979), Calahorra (1980), and Logroño (1981)
On June 9, 1982, King Juan Carlos I signed the Statute of Autonomy, making La Rioja a uniprovincial autonomous community.
The Day of La Rioja was officially observed for the first time on June 9, 1983.
Since then, the institutional celebration takes place at this historic monastery, which holds cultural and linguistic significance for Spain.
On June 8, the day before the official holiday, the town of Santa Coloma hosts the pregón (opening proclamation). This commemorates the Convention of Santa Coloma (1812), a key early event in asserting Rioja's identity.
