The History of the Day of Goodwill?
Traditionally, December 26 was known as Boxing Day in South Africa, as in many other Commonwealth countries. The term comes from the practice of giving "Christmas boxes" like gifts, money, or leftover food to workers, servants, and the poor the day after Christmas.
It was a holiday associated with generosity and gratitude, dating back to British colonial times.
After the end of apartheid in 1994, South Africa's new democratic government redefined several holidays to better reflect the values of an inclusive society. Boxing Day was renamed the Day of Goodwill.
The purpose was to move away from colonial traditions and instead emphasize reconciliation, kindness, and unity among all South Africans.
