The History of the Day of Castilla–La Mancha?
After the Spanish Constitution of 1978, Spain transitioned into a system of autonomous communities. Each region with a strong identity could create its own Statute of Autonomy, which laid the basis for self-government.
Castilla–La Mancha, a vast central region of Spain formed by the provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, and Toledo, began this process soon after the Constitution.
On August 10, 1982, the Statute of Autonomy of Castilla–La Mancha was approved by the Spanish Cortes.
This statute formally established Castilla–La Mancha as an autonomous community, granting it political institutions such as a Regional Assembly, Presidency, and Government Council.
It also recognized the region's cultural and historical identity, deeply tied to the heritage of La Mancha and Don Quixote.
The first Regional Parliament of Castilla–La Mancha and its institutions were inaugurated on May 31, 1983, in Toledo, the historic capital.
To commemorate this foundational moment of modern self-government, May 31 was declared the Day of Castilla–La Mancha.
