The History of Bermuda Day?
Bermuda Day has evolved into one of the island's most meaningful cultural holidays, symbolizing national pride, community spirit and the unofficial start of summer.
The holiday began in 1902 as Empire Day, meant to honor Queen Victoria and celebrate ties to the British Empire. Over time, as Bermudians developed a stronger sense of local identity, as well as pride in their African, Caribbean and Portuguese heritage, the celebration shifted away from colonial symbolism.
In 1979, the holiday was officially renamed Bermuda Day, marking a key moment in the island's cultural development. It became a day to honor Bermudian traditions, achievements, and unity. That same year, the first Bermuda Day Parade was held in Hamilton, featuring local dance troupes, Gombey performers, floats, and marching bands—a tradition that remains central to the holiday.
Bermuda Day is also tied to the island's connection to the sea and outdoor life. Historically, many Bermudians believed Bermuda Day marked the earliest acceptable date to take the first ocean swim of the year, kicking off boating season and summer festivities. This playful tradition still holds cultural value, even as warmer-weather swims have become more common.
In 2018, the holiday was moved from May 24 to the last Friday in May, allowing for consistent long-weekend celebrations.
Today, Bermuda Day blends heritage, pageantry and community pride. It represents the island's cultural journey—from colonial observance to a vibrant expression of Bermudian identity, celebrated with parades, sporting events, picnics and the joyful energy of summer's arrival.
