The History of Armistice Day?
World War I (1914–1918) was one of the most devastating conflicts in human history, involving over 30 countries and causing more than 16 million deaths (military and civilian).
After more than four years of trench warfare and widespread destruction, both sides sought peace.
On November 11, 1918, at 5:00 a.m., an Armistice agreement was signed between the Allied powers and Germany in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiègne, France. The armistice took effect at 11:00 a.m. (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month), ending combat on the Western Front.
The first Armistice Day commemorations began in 1919, one year after the war ended. Many countries, including France, Britain, and Commonwealth nations, held ceremonies, parades, and moments of silence to honor the war dead.
In France, November 11 was declared a national public holiday in 1922, officially dedicated to remembering those who died for the country.
Today, November 11 remains an important day for national remembrance. It is observed not only in France but also in French overseas territories), Europe, the Commonwealth, and elsewhere.
