Day of the Capital is a public holiday in Kazakhstan, and it is observed on July 6 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the Supreme Council of Kazakhstan decided to transfer the capital of Kazakhstan from Almaty to Akmola on July 6, 1994.
On December 16, 1991, Kazakhstan declared independence during the dissolution of the Soviet Union 1991. Nursultan Nazarbayev became the first President of Kazakhstan, and the capital was Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan and the capital of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic.
On July 6, 1994, Kazakhstan decided to transfer the capital to Akmola, and the capital of Kazakhstan was moved to Akmola on December 10, 1997. On May 6, 1998, the city was renamed Astana, and on March 23, 2019, it was renamed to Nur-Sultan following a unanimous vote in Kazakhstan's parliament.
Day of the Capital has been officially celebrated as a state holiday in Kazakhstan since July 18, 2008.
