Constitution Day (Uzbekistan)

Constitution Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Uzbekistan, and it is observed on December 8 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan was adopted on this day in 1992.

Uzbekistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia, and it became a Russian protectorate in the late 19th century. Following the establishment of the Soviet Union, it became one of the constituent republics of the Soviet Union, and the Constitution of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) was adopted in 1927. Two more Constitutions were adopted in 1937 and 1978, respectively.

A new Constitution started to draft in 1990 and was approved on December 8, 1992 in the 11th session of the Supreme Council of Uzbekistan. The new Constitution replaced the 1978 Uzbek SSR Constitution. After Uzbekistan declared independence on August 31, 1991, the new Constitution became the supreme law of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
