Constitution and Flag Day (Turkmenistan)

Constitution and Flag Day is a public holiday in Turkmenistan, observed on May 18 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the Constitution of Turkmenistan was adopted in 1992.

Turkmenistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. People inhabited the territory for thousands of years under different nations and cultures. Russian forces began controlling Central Asia in the late 19th century. In 1881, the Russian Empire occupied Turkmenistan.

In 1921, the Turkmen Oblast was established and turned into the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic in 1925. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Turkmenistan declared independence on October 27, 1991.

On May 18, 1992, the Constitution of Turkmenistan was adopted. As the supreme law of Turkmenistan, it defines the rights and responsibilities of citizens. The constitution has been amended several times since its adoption.

On February 19, 1992, Turkmenistan approved its current national flag, which became a holiday two years later. However, in 2017, Turkmenistan combined Flag Day and Constitution Dy and celebrated on May 18.
