Cheikh Al Maarouf Day (Comoros)

Cheikh Al Maarouf Day is a public holiday in Comoros, and it is observed on March 18 each year. It is a holiday in honor of the religious contribution of Said Muhammad bin Sheikh Ahmed, also known as Al Maarouf in Comoros.

Comoros is an island country in the Indian Ocean. People from the coast of Africa, the Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia, and Madagascar inhabited the islands over the centuries. The French started to take possession in 1841, and Comoros declared independence from France on July 6, 1975.

According to the census, about 98% of the population in  Comoros are Muslim, and almost all of them belong to the Shadhili Tariqa of Sunni Islam, which was introduced by Al Maarouf to Comoros during the French colonial times.
