Constitution Day (Uruguay)

Constitution Day is a public holiday in Uruguay, and it is observed on July 18. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the Constitution of Uruguay was adopted in 1830.

Uruguay is a country in South America. People inhabited the region for thousands of years. The Portuguese first entered the territory in 1512. However, it became under the control of Spain in 1750. In 1816, forces from Brazil invaded Uruguay and made Uruguay Brazil's Cisplatina province in 1820. On August 25, 1825, Uruguay declared independence from the Empire of Brazil.

Following the independence, the Constituent Assembly drafted the first constitution in 1829, which was heavily influenced by the French and American constitutions. The constitution was summoned in the Church of La Aguada in 1829 and came into effect on July 18, 1830. The 1830 constitution was the first Uruguay constitution and remained in effect until 1918.
