Prešeren Day is a public holiday in Slovenia, observed on February 8. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the death of France Prešeren, a 19th-century Romantic Slovene poet. He was born on December 3, 1800, and died on February 8, 1849. He was the greatest Slovene classical poet, inspiring all the later Slovene literature.
Prešeren Day was established in 1945 to raise cultural consciousness and has been a public holiday in Slovenia since 1991.
