National Unity Day (Zimbabwe)

National Unity Day is a public holiday in Zimbabwe, and it is observed on December 22 each year.

National Unity Day commemorates the unity of the two parties Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) and Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) in 1987. Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) was established in 1961, and the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) was formed as a split from the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) in 1975.

The two parties ran separately in the 1980 general election, and Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) won the election. In the following years, the two parties often conflict over major political decisions. In 1987, the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) and the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) merged into one party with the name of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU – PF).
