Independence Day (The Gambia)

Independence Day is a public holiday in the Gambia, and it is observed on February 18 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the Gambia gained its independence from the United Kingdom on February 18, 1965.

The Gambia, officially the Republic of The Gambia, is a country in West Africa. The country has a similar history to many other countries in West Africa. The Portuguese first reached the area in the mid-15th century. The British Empire occupied the Gambia following the Capture of Senegal in 1758 and made the Gambia a separate colony in 1888.

The United Kingdom was granted full internal self-governance in 1963. On February 18, 1965, the Gambia gained its independence as a constitutional monarchy, and Elizabeth II was Queen of the Gambia.
