While other provinces celebrate the Civic Holiday under different names\, British Columbia chose to dedicate the day to celebrating its own identity and history. \nBritish Columbia Day was officially recognized as a public holiday in 1974 through an amendment to the British Columbia Day Act. The holiday was designated to fall on the first Monday in August. \nIn recent years\, British Columbia Day has become an occasion to acknowledge and honor the province's Indigenous peoples\, who have lived on the land for thousands of years. \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nOn British Columbia Day\, people celebrate the province's culture\, history\, and natural beauty in various ways. \nMany towns and cities host parades\, live music\, and cultural festivals showcasing British Columbia's diverse communities. Local artists and artisans often hold exhibitions\, craft fairs\, and markets to display and sell their work. \nGiven British Columbia's stunning natural landscapes\, people often spend the day hiking\, visiting provincial parks\, or spending days on beach. \nFamilies and friends gather for outdoor meals\, often in backyards\, parks\, or by the water. Many use the long weekend to catch up with loved ones or host get-togethers. \nSome take the opportunity to visit museums or historical sites to learn more about the province's history. Increasingly\, events include recognition of British Columbia's Indigenous heritage and cultural contributions. \nIn some communities\, fireworks displays cap off the celebrations\, providing a festive end to the day.

Though it is not a statutory holiday\, it is widely recognized as an opportunity for Albertans to honor the contributions of Indigenous peoples\, early settlers\, and immigrant communities. \nHeritage Day was officially established by the Government of Alberta in 1974 as a way to celebrate the province's multiculturalism and history. The goal was to encourage Albertans to learn about their shared heritage and the diverse cultures that contribute to the province's identity. \nHeritage Day was introduced during a period when Canada was increasingly recognizing its multicultural identity. The Canadian Multiculturalism Policy of 1971\, the first of its kind in the world\, likely influenced Alberta's decision to create a holiday celebrating diversity. \nAlberta is home to Indigenous peoples\, early European settlers\, and waves of immigrants from around the world. Heritage Day was intended to highlight the unique traditions\, languages\, and histories of these diverse communities\, also to promote the preservation of Alberta's historical landmarks\, artifacts\, and oral histories for future generations. \nSince its creation in 1974\, Heritage Day has become a vibrant occasion that unites Albertans in honoring their past and embracing their shared identity. \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nOn Heritage Day in Alberta\, people participate in activities that highlight the province's rich cultural diversity and history. Many Albertans treat it as an opportunity to celebrate their heritage and enjoy the long weekend. \nEdmonton Heritage Festival is one of the largest multicultural festivals in Canada\, featuring over 60 pavilions representing different cultures\, and many people will attend Cultural Festivals. Smaller communities host their own festivals\, highlighting the unique heritage of Indigenous peoples\, settlers\, and immigrant groups. \nMany museums host special exhibits or programs focused on Alberta's cultural diversity and historical milestones. \nParks\, community centers\, and cultural organizations host picnics\, storytelling sessions\, and games that reflect Alberta's heritage\, while many Albertans use the long weekend to explore the province's stunning landscapes. \nSchools\, libraries\, and cultural centers may offer resources and programs to learn about Indigenous history and contributions. \nPeople enjoy traditional foods from different cultures\, supporting local vendors and businesses.

An athletic and determined young man\, Terry was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) in 1977\, leading to the amputation of his right leg above the knee. \nInspired to make a difference\, Terry embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise funds for cancer research. His Marathon of Hope began on April 12\, 1980\, in St. John's\, Newfoundland\, with the goal of running a marathon (42 kilometers or 26 miles) every day. \nTerry ran over 5\,373 kilometers (3\,339 miles) in 143 days\, capturing the hearts of Canadians with his perseverance and selflessness. On September 1\, 1980\, Terry was forced to halt his journey in Thunder Bay\, Ontario\, when cancer spread to his lungs. \nTerry Fox passed away on June 28\, 1981\, at the age of 22. By this time\, he had raised over $24 million for cancer research\, equivalent to one dollar for every Canadian at the time. \nIn 2015\, the Government of Manitoba declared the first Monday in August as Terry Fox Day\, aligning with the province's civic holiday. \nWhile not a federally recognized holiday\, Terry Fox's contributions are celebrated across Canada\, particularly through the Terry Fox Run\, held annually in September. The run was first organized in 1981 and has since become one of the largest fundraising events for cancer research globally. \nEstablished in 1988\, the foundation continues Terry's dream of eradicating cancer. As of 2024\, it has raised over $850 million for cancer research. \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nOn Terry Fox Day\, Canadians participate in various activities and events that celebrate his contributions to cancer research and awareness. People across Canada and the world engage in acts of remembrance\, fundraising\, and education throughout the year. \nOrganized annually in September\, the Terry Fox Run is a non-competitive event where participants walk\, run\, or bike to raise funds for cancer research. Runs are held worldwide in over 60 countries\, with millions of participants contributing to Terry's mission. \nIndividuals\, schools\, and communities raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation\, which supports cancer research. Many people contribute directly to the foundation or organize fundraising events such as bake sales\, charity walks\, or auctions. \nSchools across Canada organize assemblies\, events\, and classroom activities to teach students about Terry Fox's life\, values\, and accomplishments. \nMany Canadians reflect on Terry's courage and determination by reading about the Marathon of Hope or visiting memorials dedicated to him. \nCommunities host events such as speeches\, commemorative walks\, and vigils in honor of Terry Fox. Artists and musicians may create works inspired by Terry's journey\, which are displayed or performed during local events. \nMany cities have statues or plaques commemorating Terry Fox\, which serve as gathering spots for reflection and remembrance. Terry Fox Day highlights the ongoing need for cancer research and the power of collective action.

While the charter did not create a full nation-state\, it laid the groundwork for a confederation of autonomous regions united by common interests. \nIts date\, August 1\, 1291\, is symbolic rather than exact\, but widely accepted as the Confederation's "birthday". \nIn the 1800s\, amid rising nationalism in Europe\, Swiss historians and leaders began celebrating local legends and historical symbols of unity. The idea of a shared Swiss identity grew stronger after the Swiss Federal Constitution of 1848\, which created a modern federal state. \nOn the 600th anniversary of the Federal Charter\, August 1\, 1891\, was celebrated as a national day for the first time. \nDespite annual celebrations\, August 1 did not become a national public holiday until 1994. A popular initiative and nationwide vote led to its recognition as an official day off throughout Switzerland.

This act ended slavery across much of the British Empire\, including the Turks and Caicos Islands\, which at the time were administered under Jamaican governance as a British colony. \nOn that day in 1834\, enslaved Africans in the Turks and Caicos were officially declared free. However\, like in other British territories\, many were still forced to enter an "apprenticeship" system that lasted until 1838\, effectively delaying full emancipation. \nEnslaved people in the Turks and Caicos were mainly used in salt production\, the islands' most significant industry during the colonial period. They worked under grueling conditions in salt ponds on Grand Turk\, Salt Cay\, and South Caicos. \nDespite harsh conditions\, enslaved Africans in Turks and Caicos Islands maintained strong ties to their cultural traditions and often resisted oppression in both subtle and overt ways. \nEmancipation Day is more than a historical marker—it's a powerful symbol of human rights\, social justice\, and identity for Turks and Caicos Islanders. It encourages reflection on the legacy of slavery\, the challenges faced by descendants of enslaved people\, and the importance of cultural continuity.

By the 19th century\, both Britain and France had established a presence in the region\, driven by trade\, missionary work\, and strategic interests. \nIn 1906\, the two colonial powers agreed to a unique arrangement called the Anglo-French Condominium\, under which both countries jointly governed the islands — an unusual and often confusing dual administration. \nThe dual rule led to administrative inefficiencies and tensions among the islanders. \nBy the 1960s and 70s\, a push for independence began gaining momentum. The emergence of nationalist political parties and leaders\, notably Walter Lini\, became central to the movement. \nPolitical unrest and clashes with colonial forces intensified in the late 1970s\, especially in places like Espiritu Santo. Eventually\, a peaceful transition was negotiated\, and on July 30\, 1980\, Vanuatu officially gained independence. \nFather Walter Lini\, a key figure in the independence struggle\, became Vanuatu's first Prime Minister. Since then\, July 30th has been a national holiday marked by pride\, unity\, and cultural celebration.

Over the centuries\, the Pahang monarchy has evolved\, serving as a symbol of governance and cultural identity for the state. \nThe Sultan is the constitutional monarch and the head of Islam in Pahang\, holding significant ceremonial and symbolic responsibilities. The Sultan's Birthday became an occasion to recognize the ruler's contributions to the state's governance\, cultural preservation and Islamic leadership. \nThe tradition of honoring the Sultan's Birthday likely began during the early modern era as a way to celebrate the Sultan's leadership and contributions to the state. The observance became more formalized in the 20th century\, aligning with the development of Pahang as part of the Federated Malay States and later the Federation of Malaya (now Malaysia). \nThe Sultan of Pahang's Birthday was officially designated as a public holiday after Malaya's independence in 1957. The date was set to reflect the birth date of the reigning Sultan\, changing with each new monarch to honor their leadership. \nSultan Abu Bakar (1932–1974) was the first Sultan to be celebrated in the modern format of the holiday. Under Sultan Ahmad Shah's reign (1974–2019)\, the celebration grew in prominence\, incorporating larger state ceremonies\, cultural performances and public engagement. \nThe current Sultan of Pahang\, Al-Sultan Abdullah\, ascended the throne on January 15\, 2019\, following the abdication of his father\, Sultan Ahmad Shah. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nOn the Sultan of Pahang's Birthday\, residents of Pahang and visitors participate in various activities that celebrate the Sultan's leadership\, honor the monarchy\, and reflect the state's cultural and historical heritage. \nA formal event held at the Sultan's official residence\, attended by government officials\, dignitaries\, and members of the royal family. \nA ceremonial parade featuring the state's armed forces and police units\, conducted in the Sultan's honor. \nMosques across Pahang hold special prayers to seek blessings for the Sultan's health\, long reign\, and the prosperity of the state. \nThe day often includes acts of charity\, such as food distribution\, monetary aid to the needy\, and support for local communities\, reflecting Islamic values. \nTraditional Malay dances\, music\, and martial arts performances are organized to showcase the rich heritage of Pahang. \nResidents gather in public spaces or community centers to celebrate the day\, often with communal feasts and traditional games. Families take advantage of the public holiday to spend time together\, enjoying outings\, traditional food\, and local attractions. \nMore about Pahang\nPahang is the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia and one of the oldest regions with a rich historical\, cultural and natural heritage. Known for its lush rainforests\, highlands and beautiful coastlines\, Pahang offers a diverse blend of nature\, history and modern development. \nPahang is situated in the central and eastern part of Peninsular Malaysia. Bordered by Kelantan to the north\, Terengganu to the northeast\, Perak to the west\, Selangor to the southwest\, Negeri Sembilan to the south\, and Johor to the southeast. The South China Sea forms its eastern coastline. \nThe state covers approximately 35\,965 square kilometers\, making it the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia. Kuantan is the state capital and largest city\, known for its vibrant economy and coastal attractions. \nPahang has been inhabited since prehistoric times\, with archaeological evidence of early human settlements. It was part of the ancient Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms like Langkasuka and Srivijaya. \nPahang became a vassal state of the Malacca Sultanate in the 15th century. In 1470\, a member of the Malacca royal family established the Pahang Sultanate\, which remains a significant institution today. \nThe British began exerting influence in Pahang in the late 19th century\, incorporating it into the Federated Malay States in 1895. During World War II\, Pahang was occupied by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945. \nPahang became part of the Federation of Malaya in 1957\, gaining independence from British rule\, and later Malaysia in 1963.

While France provided military and external protection\, traditional monarchies retained local control under French oversight. \nThroughout the 20th century\, residents of Wallis and Futuna desired greater integration with Franc\, and wanted access to French citizenship\, education\, healthcare\, and infrastructure. \nAfter petitions and negotiations\, France passed legislation to change the islands' political status. \nOn July 29\, 1961\, Wallis and Futuna officially became a French overseas territory. Key outcomes included: \n– All residents received French citizenship;\n– French institutions and administrative structures were established;\n– Traditional kings and chiefs retained authority under a unique system blending customary rule and republican governance. \nIn 2003\, the territory transitioned into a French overseas collectivity. Territory Day is a national celebration of the islands' identity as part of France\, with strong cultural pride.

His formal coronation took place in May 2019. \nWhile the monarchy had long honored the sovereign's birthday\, July 28 was officially declared a national holiday in 2017\, shifting it from the previous date (King Bhumibol's birthday on 5 December). \nThe holiday honors King Rama X's birth and symbolizes continuity of the Chakri dynasty\, reinforcing national unity and reverence for the monarchy.

However\, the Neo Destour Party\, led by Habib Bourguiba\, viewed the monarchy as a symbolic remnant of colonial influence and incompatible with the vision of a modern state. \nOn July 25\, 1957\, Tunisia's National Constituent Assembly abolished the monarchy\, proclaimed Tunisia a republic\, and appointed Habib Bourguiba as the first President. This move officially ended over 250 years of monarchical rule and launched a new political system based on republican values and popular sovereignty. \nIn the same year (1957)\, the new government designated July 25 as a national public holiday to commemorate the founding of the Republic.

This victory secured Glarus's independence and contributed significantly to the consolidation and strength of the early Swiss Confederation. \nIn 1389\, just one year after the battle\, the Landsgemeinde (the traditional people's assembly of Glarus) decreed that an annual pilgrimage and memorial service should be held to remember the fallen and give thanks for the victory. The term "Fahrt" means "journey" or "procession"\, reflecting the nature of the commemorative walk. \nNäfelser Fahrt is the oldest continuously observed public commemoration in Switzerland. It represents the spirit of resistance\, and independence that helped shape Swiss national identity.

Many nations chose different dates based on cultural significance or national priorities. \nVanuatu established Children's Day as a national holiday on July 24\, reflecting the nation's commitment to protecting and nurturing children. \nThe day aligns with national and international principles outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child\, which Vanuatu ratified in 1993\, and the local laws and policies protecting children's access to education\, health\, and safety. \nWhile there is no single historical event tied to this date in Vanuatu\, July 24 was chosen to provide a dedicated platform for listening to children's voices\, celebrating their potential and promoting child-friendly development and protection policies.

Orphaned by the age of 9\, he was placed under the guardianship of tutors\, including Simón Rodríguez\, who introduced him to Enlightenment ideals. \nIn his teenage years\, Bolívar was sent to Europe\, where he witnessed Napoleon's coronation and absorbed revolutionary philosophies\, particularly those of Rousseau\, Voltaire\, and Locke. \nBolívar's birthday is celebrated across multiple countries in South America\, particularly in Venezuela\, where it is a national holiday. His birth on July 24\, 1783\, is seen as the beginning of one of Latin America's most transformative lives\, eventually leading to: \n1. The end of Spanish colonial rule across much of northern South America;\n2. The formation of Gran Colombia\, a short-lived union of liberated territories. \nBolívar is remembered not only as a military leader but also as a visionary for Latin American unity and republican governance.

These settlers\, led by Brigham Young\, were seeking a new home where they could practice their religion without persecution. They embarked on a treacherous journey from Nauvoo\, Illinois\, following the death of the church's founder\, Joseph Smith. \nOn July 24\, 1847\, after a difficult journey across the Great Plains and through the Rocky Mountains\, Brigham Young and the advance party of Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley. Brigham Young\, viewing the valley for the first time\, declared\, "This is the right place\," signaling the end of their long search for a safe haven. \nThe first celebration of what would become Pioneer Day was held as early as 1849. These early observances included a mix of religious ceremonies and festive activities such as feasts\, sports\, and music\, reflecting both gratitude for their safe arrival and joy at their successful establishment of a new community. \nBy the 1870s\, Pioneer Day was recognized as an official holiday in Utah. The day's events often included political speeches\, reaffirming the pioneers' legacy and the virtues of their faith and perseverance. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nToday\, Pioneer Day is a public holiday in Utah\, with most state offices and many businesses closed. It is celebrated with various activities that blend historical commemorations with modern festivities. \nOne of the largest and most well-known events of Pioneer Day in Salt Lake City\, the parade features floats\, bands\, horses\, and participants dressed in 19th-century pioneer clothing. It attracts large crowds and is broadcast on television. \nThis is a highlight of the holiday\, showcasing traditional rodeo events that pay homage to the skills and entertainments of the pioneer era. Similar to Independence Day celebrations\, Pioneer Day concludes with spectacular fireworks displays throughout the state\, with one of the largest shows taking place in Salt Lake City. \nMany communities host events where participants reenact the entry of Brigham Young and the first settlers into the Salt Lake Valley. These often include wagon trains and historical camps. Families and communities often organize picnics and gatherings in parks and other public places\, featuring traditional games and activities. \nSome communities organize service projects on Pioneer Day to give back to the community\, reflecting the communal spirit of the pioneers. Pioneer Day is a mix of historical reflection\, cultural celebration\, and festive activities\, making it a unique and significant holiday in Utah that both commemorates the past and celebrates the community's ongoing spirit and unity. \nWho is Brigham Young?\nBrigham Young was a significant figure in American religious history\, best known for his role as a leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and his pioneering efforts in settling the American West. Born on June 1\, 1801\, in Whitingham\, Vermont\, Young became the second President of the LDS Church\, succeeding the church's founder\, Joseph Smith\, after Smith's death in 1844. \nBrigham Young grew up in a poor farming family and had little formal education. He worked as a carpenter\, painter\, and glazier. Young converted to Mormonism in 1832\, two years after its founding. He was deeply influenced by the Book of Mormon and quickly became a significant leader within the nascent church. \nFollowing Joseph Smith's assassination in 1844\, Brigham Young assumed leadership of the LDS Church. Facing intense persecution in Nauvoo\, Illinois\, Young led the Mormon pioneers westward in search of a safe haven. This journey culminated in the 1847 arrival in the Salt Lake Valley\, where Young reportedly declared\, "This is the right place." \nAs president of the LDS Church and later as the first governor of the Utah Territory\, Young oversaw the establishment of Salt Lake City and the colonization of much of the American West. Under his direction\, Mormons founded hundreds of towns and communities throughout Utah\, Idaho\, Arizona\, Nevada\, California\, and parts of Mexico. \nYoung was a staunch defender of plural marriage\, which became one of the most controversial aspects of his leadership. He had over 50 wives and fathered 57 children. Brigham Young died on August 29\, 1877\, in Salt Lake City\, Utah. His leadership had a lasting impact on the LDS Church and the development of the American West.

The Brooke family established a stable administration and expanded the territory but faced resistance from local communities over time. \nFollowing World War II and the Japanese occupation (1941–1945)\, the last White Rajah\, Charles Vyner Brooke\, ceded Sarawak to Britain in 1946\, making it a British Crown Colony. British administration brought modernization but also sparked local dissatisfaction due to perceived neglect and limited political autonomy. \nThe mid-20th century saw rising calls for self-rule and independence among Sarawakians. Local leaders and nationalist movements began to advocate for greater control over Sarawak's governance and resources. \nUnder pressure from nationalist movements and as part of Britain's decolonization efforts\, the British government agreed to grant Sarawak self-governance. \nOn July 22\, 1963\, the Governor of Sarawak\, Sir Alexander Waddell\, officially transferred administrative powers to Sarawakian leaders\, ending colonial rule over internal affairs. \nAfter achieving self-governance\, Sarawak joined the Federation of Malaysia on September 16\, 1963\, along with Sabah\, Singapore\, and Malaya. The decision to join Malaysia was influenced by geopolitical considerations\, including the need for economic development and defense against regional threats. \nFor decades\, Sarawak Day was not widely acknowledged\, as focus shifted to Malaysia Day (September 16) and national celebrations. \nIn 2016\, the Sarawak government officially declared July 22 a public holiday to honor the historical significance of Sarawak's self-governance. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nSarawak Day is observed with a mix of official ceremonies\, cultural activities\, and community celebrations that reflect Sarawak's unique heritage and historical journey. \nHeld in major cities like Kuching\, Sibu\, and Miri\, these events mark the day with the raising of the Sarawak flag. State leaders\, including the Chief Minister\, deliver speeches reflecting on Sarawak's history and aspirations. \nWreath-laying ceremonies honor leaders and individuals who played significant roles in Sarawak's path to self-governance. \nCultural shows feature dances\, music and performances from Sarawak's diverse ethnic groups. Showcases of Sarawak's rich artistic traditions\, including beadwork\, weaving and woodcarving. \nSome cities and towns organize cultural festivals where locals and visitors can enjoy music\, dance\, and food. \nMany Sarawakians use the public holiday to spend quality time with loved ones\, often visiting local attractions or participating in community events. \nThe History of Sarawak\nThe history of Sarawak\, Malaysia's largest state\, is a fascinating tale of indigenous kingdoms and modern development. Located on the island of Borneo\, Sarawak has a rich and diverse heritage shaped by its indigenous peoples\, interactions with regional powers\, and integration into the Federation of Malaysia. \nArchaeological evidence\, including tools and cave paintings\, suggests human presence in Sarawak for over 40\,000 years. The Niah Caves\, home to one of the oldest human remains in Southeast Asia highlight its prehistoric significance. \nSarawak was home to various indigenous groups\, including the Iban\, Bidayuh\, Orang Ulu\, and Malay communities. These groups developed distinct languages\, traditions\, and social structures\, with economies based on farming\, fishing\, and trade. \nSarawak came under the influence of the Brunei Sultanate in the 15th century. The Sultanate introduced Islam and organized the region into administrative districts\, including the Kuching area. \nSarawak's modern history began when James Brooke\, a British adventurer\, helped the Sultan of Brunei suppress a rebellion in the Kuching region. In return\, Brooke was granted governance of Sarawak in 1841\, marking the start of the Brooke Dynasty. \nUnder the Brooke family\, Sarawak expanded its territory and established a stable administration. \nSarawak was occupied by Japanese forces during World War II. The occupation caused significant hardship. Allied forces liberated Sarawak in 1945\, and it briefly returned to Brooke rule. \nIn 1946\, Charles Vyner Brooke ceded Sarawak to the British Crown\, making it a Crown Colony. This decision sparked local opposition\, with some Sarawakians viewing it as a betrayal of Sarawak's autonomy. \nOn July 22\, 1963\, Sarawak achieved self-governance\, marking an important step toward autonomy\, and this day is now celebrated as Sarawak Day. \nSarawak joined the Federation of Malaysia on September 16\, 1963\, alongside Sabah\, Singapore\, and Malaya. Not all Sarawakians supported the formation of Malaysia\, leading to uprisings (1962–1990). Over time\, the insurgency was suppressed\, and stability returned.

In 1970\, the Gambia became a republic but did not withdraw from the Commonwealth. \nOn July 22\, 1994\, a group of young Gambian soldiers\, led by Lieutenant Yahya Jammeh\, carried out a bloodless military coup. \nThey overthrew President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara\, who had led the country since its independence in 1965. The coup ended The Gambia's status as one of Africa's longest-standing multi-party democracies. After seizing power\, Jammeh established the Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council (AFPRC) and suspended the constitution. \nIn 1996\, he won a controversial presidential election\, and he was re-elected for three more terms in 2001\, 2006 and 2011. The anniversary of the coup is declared as the national holiday namely Revolution Day. \nIn December 2016\, Jammeh lost the presidential election to Adama Barrow\, ending over two decades of his rule.

The newly formed state needed a legal and institutional structure to define its government and protect citizens' rights. \nOn July 18\, 1830\, Uruguay officially adopted its first Constitution\, establishing a unitary republican form of government\, a President as head of state and government\, a bicameral Parliament (General Assembly)\, and civil liberties\, such as property rights and legal equality. \nThe 1830 Constitution represented a landmark in South American constitutionalism. It provided political stability and a legal foundation for state institutions. \nOver time\, Uruguay would go through constitutional reforms (notably in 1918\, 1934\, 1952\, and 1967)\, but July 18 remains symbolic of the nation's first step toward democratic self-rule.

It honors the leadership of the Raja\, who serves as the constitutional monarch and protector of Perlis' traditions and unity. \nThe Perlis monarchy was established in 1843 when the region was carved out of the Kingdom of Kedah by Siam (now Thailand). This marked the founding of an independent Perlis state. \nThe first Raja of Perlis\, Tuanku Syed Hussain Jamalullail\, was appointed by the Siamese government. He was a nobleman from the Jamalullail clan\, which continues to hold the throne today. \nThe Raja of Perlis was historically responsible for governing the state\, maintaining order and protecting Islamic traditions. Unlike the larger Malay states\, Perlis retained a smaller\, more localized monarchy\, which suited its size and population. \nThe birthday of the Raja was traditionally observed with feasts\, religious ceremonies\, and community events. \nDuring British colonial rule (1909–1957)\, the Raja continued to play a significant ceremonial and administrative role\, acting as a bridge between the colonial government and the local population. The Raja's Birthday became a formalized occasion to honor the monarchy and reinforce cultural and social unity. \nAfter Malaysia gained independence in 1957\, the Raja's Birthday was officially designated as a state holiday to recognize the monarchy's contributions to Perlis' governance and development. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nOn the Raja of Perlis' Birthday\, the people of Perlis observe a mix of formal ceremonies\, cultural activities\, and community celebrations to honor the Raja's leadership and contributions to the state. \nThe main event takes place at Istana Arau\, the royal palace\, where the Raja presides over the celebration. \nSpecial prayers for peace and well-being and tahlil recitations are held in mosques across Perlis to pray for the Raja's health and the state's prosperity. \nTraditional dances like Zapin and Joget\, along with Malay Gamelan music\, showcase Perlis' cultural heritage. Public exhibitions often highlight the history of the Perlis monarchy\, local traditions and the state's achievements. \nVillages and communities organize feasts where residents come together to celebrate\, and traditional dishes and various desserts are served. \nActs of charity\, such as food donations and support for underprivileged families\, are common\, reflecting the Raja's values of compassion and service. \nFamilies often use the public holiday to spend quality time together\, exploring local attractions\, parks\, or participating in festivities. \nThe History of Perlis\nThe history of Perlis\, the smallest state in Malaysia\, is located in the northernmost part of Peninsular Malaysia. Perlis has a unique identity shaped by its history as part of larger regional powers and its eventual establishment as a sovereign state. \nArchaeological evidence indicates that Perlis has been inhabited since prehistoric times\, with early communities living off agriculture and trade. The area was originally part of Kedah\, one of the oldest kingdoms in Southeast Asia\, and played a role in the maritime trade networks connecting the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. \nPerlis was under the rule of various empires and powers over the centuries. In the 19th century\, Perlis was under the suzerainty of Siam (now Thailand) as part of the larger Kingdom of Kedah. \nIn 1821\, Siam (now Thailand) conquered Kedah\, including Perlis. After quelling local resistance\, Siam separated Perlis from Kedah in 1843\, creating it as an independent state. \nSyed Hussain Jamalullail\, a nobleman of Arab descent\, was appointed the first Raja of Perlis by the Siamese King\, marking the establishment of the Perlis monarchy. The Jamalullail dynasty continues to rule Perlis to this day. \nThe Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 transferred Perlis and other northern states from Siamese to British control. During World War II\, Perlis was occupied by the Japanese\, who returned it to Siam as part of their alliance. \nAfter the war\, Perlis was returned to British administration\, and efforts began to rebuild its economy and governance. \nPerlis became part of the Federation of Malaya in 1957\, achieving independence from British rule. As a member of the federation\, Perlis contributed to the establishment of Malaysia in 1963. \nPerlis is governed as a constitutional monarchy\, with the Raja as the ceremonial head of state and a Chief Minister managing day-to-day governance.

The plotters also tried to take control of state media\, where a forced statement was read declaring martial law. \nPresident Recep Tayyip Erdoğan\, using a FaceTime broadcast on CNN Türk\, called on the public to take to the streets to defend democracy. Millions of civilians responded\, confronting armed troops\, blocking tanks\, and occupying public spaces to resist the coup. \nThe coup attempt was crushed within 24 hours\, but at a high cost: over 250 civilians and security personnel were killed\, and more than 2\,000 people were injured. \nOn October 26\, 2016\, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey officially passed legislation declaring July 15 as "Democracy and National Unity Day"\, which marks the defeat of the 2016 coup attempt and celebrates the power of ordinary citizens to protect democratic rule.

It is a powerful affirmation of Ukraine's historic continuity from the medieval kingdom of Kyivan Rus' to the modern Ukrainian nation. \nThe origins of Ukrainian statehood trace back to Kyivan Rus'\, a medieval Slavic state centered in Kyiv\, founded in the 9th century. In 988\, Prince Volodymyr the Great adopted Christianity as the official religion\, a foundational event for Ukraine's political\, cultural\, and spiritual life. \nKyivan Rus' is widely regarded as the first form of organized Ukrainian statehood\, with its own governance\, laws\, and international ties. \nUkrainian Statehood Day was introduced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2021 and officially established by Parliament in May 2022. Its creation was a direct response to Russian historical revisionism\, particularly the denial of Ukraine's unique national identity and long-standing statehood. \nBy honoring a millennium of sovereignty\, the holiday asserts that Ukrainian nationhood did not begin with independence in 1991\, but is rooted in centuries of historical evolution. \nJuly 15 coincides with celebrations related to Volodymyr the Great and the baptism of Kyivan Rus'\, symbolizing the birth of Ukrainian Christianity\, the establishment of centralized power\, and Ukraine's early integration into European culture and politics. \nFirst observed during the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022\, Ukrainian Statehood Day quickly became a symbol of unity\, defiance and resilience. It reaffirms that Ukraine is not a "younger state" or a breakaway republic\, but a historic nation with deep roots.

The common people (Third Estate) suffered under heavy taxation\, while the nobility and clergy (First and Second Estates) enjoyed privileges. \nThe Bastille was a medieval fortress and prison in Paris\, seen as a symbol of royal tyranny and oppression\, even though it held only seven prisoners at the time. \nOn July 14\, 1789\, thousands of Parisians\, fearing a royal crackdown\, stormed the Bastille to seize gunpowder and weapons. \nThe fall of the Bastille became a symbol of popular resistance\, representing the people's fight against absolute monarchy and injustice. \nThe storming of the Bastille signaled the start of the French Revolution\, which would lead to the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of the French Republic. \nOn July 14\, 1790\, one year later\, France celebrated the "Fête de la Fédération"\, a massive festival celebrating national unity and peace after the first year of the Revolution. \nJuly 14 was officially declared France's National Day in 1880\, under the French Third Republic\, nearly a century after the storming of the Bastille.

This Protestant victory ensured the continuation of Protestant rule in Britain and Ireland. \nThe Orange Order\, founded in 1795 in Ireland\, is a Protestant fraternal organization. It spread to British colonies\, including Newfoundland\, where it became influential among Protestant settlers. \nNewfoundland\, with its strong connections to Britain and Ireland\, became a significant location for the Orange Order in Canada. The order was brought to Newfoundland by Irish Protestant immigrants in the early 19th century. \nOrangemen's Day was observed in Newfoundland in the middle 19th century\, and it became an official holiday in recognition of the order's prominence in the province. \nBy the middle 20th century\, the religious and cultural landscape of Newfoundland began to change. Sectarian divisions between Protestants and Catholics diminished as society became more diverse and secular\, and the influence of the Orange Order declined. \nWhile it remains a public holiday in Newfoundland and Labrador\, active celebrations of Orangemen's Day have largely faded. The day is now a quiet holiday\, offering most workers a day off without major public events. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nOn Orangemen's Day in Newfoundland and Labrador\, the holiday is now primarily a quiet day of rest and relaxation. While its historical roots involved significant celebrations and parades by the Orange Order\, modern observance has shifted with few formal activities. \nOrangemen's Day remains a public holiday in Newfoundland and Labrador\, giving most workers a long weekend to relax. \nMany people use the day to spend quality time with family and friends. Activities such as barbecues\, picnics\, and casual gatherings are common. \nResidents often take advantage of the summer weather by going hiking\, walking or enjoying time near Newfoundland's scenic coastlines and parks. For some\, the holiday is a time to reflect on the province's history\, including its ties to the Orange Order and its cultural heritage. \nIn most communities\, the traditional parades and formal events associated with Orangemen's Day have faded. The day is now less about organized celebration and more about personal relaxation and enjoying the holiday. \nThe Battle of the Boyne\nThe Battle of the Boyne was a significant historical conflict fought near the River Boyne in Ireland on July 12\, 1690. It was a decisive moment in the struggle for the English\, Scottish\, and Irish thrones and remains a pivotal event in Irish and British history. \nThe battle pitted King James II\, a Catholic\, against King William III of Orange\, a Protestant and James's son-in-law. James had been deposed from the English throne in 1688 and sought to reclaim it with the support of Catholic allies in Ireland and France. \nThe battle symbolized the conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism in Ireland and Britain. Protestants generally supported William\, while Catholics backed James. \nThe battle took place near Drogheda\, along the River Boyne\, about 50 kilometers north of Dublin\, Ireland. William III led an army of approximately 36\,000 troops\, including Dutch\, Danish\, English\, and Ulster Protestant soldiers. James II commanded around 25\,000 troops\, made up of Irish Catholics and French soldiers provided by King Louis XIV of France. \nWilliam's forces successfully crossed the Boyne River despite James's defensive positions. Superior strategy and numbers allowed William's army to outmaneuver and defeat James's forces. James fled the battlefield\, retreating to France\, effectively abandoning his claim to the throne. \nThe Protestant King William III emerged victorious\, solidifying his rule over England\, Scotland\, and Ireland. The battle was a key moment in ensuring Protestant dominance in Ireland\, particularly in the north.

During the colonial period\, Penang was governed by British administrators who were appointed to oversee the region's trade\, security and development. \nFollowing the end of British rule\, Penang became a part of the Federation of Malaya in 1957 and later Malaysia in 1963. As a non-monarchical state\, Penang\, like Malacca\, Sabah\, and Sarawak\, was appointed a Yang di-Pertua Negeri (Governor) as its head of state. \nThe Penang Governor's Birthday became an official occasion to recognize the role and contributions of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri as the ceremonial leader. \nThe celebration began with modest ceremonies\, including formal gatherings and the presentation of state awards. \nOver time\, the event expanded to include cultural performances\, exhibitions\, and public participation\, showcasing Penang's vibrant multicultural identity. The Governor's Birthday became an opportunity to reflect on Penang's progress and achievements. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nOn the Penang Governor's Birthday\, people in Penang observe a public holiday with a mix of formal ceremonies\, cultural events and community activities. \nThe main celebration takes place at Seri Mutiara\, the official residence of the Governor. \nSpecial Prayers are held in mosques to pray for the Governor's health\, long reign\, and the state's prosperity. \nPublic spaces\, government buildings\, and streets are decorated with Penang state flags and banners\, and festive lights to enhance the celebratory atmosphere. \nTraditional dances\, music and martial arts performances reflect Penang's multicultural heritage\, with influences from Malay\, Chinese\, Indian\, and other communities. \nFamilies and friends come together for small feasts\, picnics or outings to celebrate the public holiday. Neighborhoods may organize events like charity drives or communal meals. \nActs of charity\, such as food distribution or donations to the less fortunate\, are common to mark the occasion. \nBusinesses and attractions often offer discounts or host special events to celebrate the day. \nThe History of Penang\nThe history of Penang is a fascinating tale of trade\, cultural exchange and political evolution. Located strategically in the Straits of Malacca\, Penang has played a pivotal role as a global trading hub and modern economic powerhouse. \nEvidence of early human settlement in Penang dates back thousands of years\, with archaeological findings in Guar Kepah and other areas. The island was inhabited by indigenous peoples\, including the Malay communities. \nPenang was likely part of the Srivijaya Empire (7th – 13th centuries)\, a powerful maritime kingdom based in Sumatra. The island was known to traders from China\, India\, and the Middle East\, who stopped there on their way through the Straits of Malacca. \nIn 1786\, Captain Francis Light\, representing the British East India Company\, acquired Penang from the Sultan of Kedah. The settlement of George Town was established as the first British foothold in Southeast Asia. \nThe British encouraged immigration to support trade and agriculture\, resulting in a diverse population of Chinese\, Indians\, Malays and Eurasians. \nIn 1826\, Penang became part of the Straits Settlements\, along with Malacca and Singapore\, under British colonial administration. \nPenang fell to Japanese forces during World War II in December 1941 and remained under Japanese occupation until 1945. \nAfter World War II\, Penang was integrated into the Malayan Union (1946) and later the Federation of Malaya (1948). Penang's free port status was abolished in 1969\, affecting its economic significance. \nPenang became a state of Malaysia upon its formation in 1963. George Town\, the capital of Penang\, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008\, alongside Malacca.

It commemorates the Battle of the Boyne (1690) and the victory of Protestant King William III of Orange over the Catholic King James II\, a pivotal moment in British and Irish history. \nThe battle took place on July 11 under the Gregorian calendar\, but celebrated on July 12 for convenience. William III's victory ensured Protestant supremacy in Ireland and secured his position as king of England\, Scotland\, and Ireland. This victory is viewed as a landmark event in the history of Protestantism in the British Isles. \nThe Orange Order\, a Protestant fraternal organization\, was founded in 1795 in County Armagh\, Ireland. Named after William of Orange\, the order was established to defend Protestant interests and celebrate the legacy of the Glorious Revolution and William's triumph at the Boyne. \nEarly commemorations of the Battle of the Boyne included parades\, bonfires\, and gatherings\, often marked by tensions between Protestant and Catholic communities. \nBy the 19th century\, Orangemen's Day became a formalized event with organized parades and rituals led by the Orange Order. The day served to reinforce Protestant identity and loyalty to the British Crown. \nFollowing the partition of Ireland\, Orangemen's Day became more prominent in Northern Ireland\, where it symbolized the unionist community's ties to Britain. However\, in the Republic of Ireland\, the event lost its significance as the country developed a predominantly Catholic identity. \nDuring Northern Ireland's conflict from 1960s to 1990s\, The Orangemen's Day was often a flashpoint for sectarian tensions between Protestant unionists and Catholic nationalists. Parades\, particularly those marching through Catholic neighborhoods\, became highly controversial\, leading to violence and clashes. \nIn recent years\, efforts have been made to reduce tensions surrounding The Twelfth\, emphasizing its historical and cultural aspects over political divides. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nThe central event on Orangemen's Day is the parades organized by the Orange Order. Participants\, known as Orangemen\, wear traditional regalia\, including sashes\, white gloves\, and bowler hats. Major parades take place in cities as well as smaller towns and rural areas. \nOn the eve of Orangemen's Day\, bonfires are lit in Protestant and unionist communities. These fires symbolize the Protestant victory at the Battle of the Boyne and are often built using wooden pallets and other materials. The largest bonfires can reach impressive heights and attract large crowds. \nMany people use the day as an opportunity to spend time with family and friends. Some gather for picnics or barbecues in public parks or gardens\, often near parade routes. \nIn some areas\, religious services are held to honor Protestant traditions and the historical legacy of William of Orange. Streets\, lampposts and homes in Protestant neighborhoods are often decorated with Union Jack flags\, Orange Order banners and bunting. \nIn Northern Ireland\, Orangemen's Day is a public holiday\, allowing most people to take the day off work. Many take advantage of the time to enjoy leisure activities\, such as visiting local attractions\, or traveling to rural areas or beaches.

The Nunavut Land Claims Agreement addressed these issues and recognized Inuit as the stewards of their traditional territories. \nOn July 9\, 1993\, the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement was signed\, marking a historic moment for the Inuit people. This agreement granted Inuit land rights and laid the foundation for the creation of Nunavut. \nNunavut officially became a territory on April 1\, 1999\, separating from the Northwest Territories. The creation of Nunavut provided Inuit with self-governance and the ability to manage their land and resources. \nNunavut Day was first celebrated in 1993 to mark the signing of the land claims agreement. It continues to be observed as a holiday within the territory. \nToday\, Nunavut Day is a statutory holiday in the territory\, meaning government offices\, schools\, and many businesses are closed. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nOn Nunavut Day\, people across Nunavut engage in a variety of activities that highlight Inuit culture and the significance of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. \nPeople celebrate the day with traditional performances such as throat singing and drum dancing. \nMany communities host feasts featuring traditional Inuit foods such as Arctic char\, bannock\, seal\, and caribou. Some towns organize parades or community gatherings to bring people together in celebration. \nSchools\, cultural centers and community organizations host workshops and presentations on Inuit history\, the significance of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement\, and the creation of Nunavut. \nNunavut Day is a statutory holiday in the territory\, giving residents the day off to relax\, celebrate\, and connect with their heritage. \nMore about Nunavut\nNunavut is Canada's largest and newest territory\, officially established on April 1\, 1999\, following the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. \nCovering approximately 2 million square kilometers\, Nunavut accounts for about 20% of Canada's landmass\, making it the largest Canadian territory. However\, it is sparsely populated\, with fewer than 40\,000 residents. \nNunavut is divided into three regions: Kitikmeot (western region)\, Kivalliq (central region)\, and Qikiqtaaluk (eastern region\, including Baffin Island). The capital city is Iqaluit\, located on Baffin Island. \nApproximately 85% Nunavut's population is Inuit. The Inuit maintain a strong connection to their traditional culture and language\, Inuktitut\, which is one of Nunavut's official languages along with English and French. \nInuit ancestors have lived in the Arctic for thousands of years\, adapting to the challenging environment with remarkable ingenuity. \nEuropean explorers began arriving in the Arctic in the 16th century\, followed by traders\, whalers and missionaries. The introduction of Western institutions and practices had significant impacts on Inuit communities\, leading to cultural and economic changes. \nThe Inuit's push for self-determination began in the 1970s with negotiations for land claims. The Nunavut Land Claims Agreement in 1993 was the largest Indigenous land claims settlement in Canadian history\, leading to the creation of Nunavut.

To promote harmony and inclusiveness\, he introduced the powerful slogan: "One Zambia\, One Nation". \nUnity Day was officially introduced shortly after independence as a way to: \n– Foster a spirit of national identity;\n– Promote tolerance and cooperation among different communities;\n– Prevent the growth of tribal politics and social fragmentation. \nNowadays\, Unity Day continues to be especially relevant as Zambia faces contemporary challenges. The day is used to encourage youth to embrace unity\, celebrate Zambia's peaceful history\, and contribute to an inclusive future.
