It was first established to commemorate the Haymarket affair of May 1886 in Chicago\, where workers striking for an 8-hour workday faced violent suppression. The event inspired worldwide recognition of May 1 as a day for workers' rights and social justice. \nThe first official Labour Day celebration in Hungary took place in 1890. Workers organized demonstrations in Budapest and other cities\, demanding better conditions and labor rights. May 1 quickly became a symbol of the Hungarian workers' movement and socialist ideals\, blending rallies with festive spring gatherings. \nDuring the short-lived Hungarian Soviet Republic (1919)\, May 1 was celebrated as a state holiday for the first time. After the fall of the communist regime\, it was banned by conservative governments\, though workers continued to commemorate it unofficially. Under the Horthy regime (1920–1944)\, May Day celebrations were heavily restricted. \nAfter World War II and the communist takeover in 1949\, May 1 was declared an official public holiday. It became one of the most important state celebrations. Labour Day thus functioned both as a political propaganda event and as a popular spring holiday for ordinary people. \nWith the fall of communism\, May 1 lost its ideological character but remained a public holiday. It is seen as both a day of rest and leisure and a reminder of Hungary's labour movement history. \nLabour Day in Hungary reflects over a century of change: from a workers' rights demonstration in the 1890s\, to a major socialist state celebration during communism\, to its present role as a springtime public holiday with cultural and social significance.

The holiday traces back to the 1886 workers' strike in Chicago\, where demands for the 8-hour workday sparked protests and the tragic events of Haymarket Square. This inspired workers' movements around the world\, including in Iceland. \nIn the early 20th century\, Iceland began developing a strong labour movement. Trade unions were formed to improve wages\, reduce long working hours\, and secure better living conditions for workers. \nThe growing power of unions aligned Iceland with broader European workers' rights campaigns\, and May 1 became an important date for demonstrations and solidarity. \nBy the mid-20th century\, Labour Day was officially recognized as a public holiday in Iceland. It became a central day for union-led parades\, speeches\, and gatherings\, where political leaders\, labour activists\, and citizens came together to advocate for workers' rights. \nToday\, Labour Day in Iceland is both a celebration and a call to action. It serves to honor achievements such as the 40-hour workweek\, fair wages\, and social welfare protections\, while reminding people of ongoing struggles for equality and fair labour practices.

It commemorates the struggle for an eight-hour workday\, especially the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago\, where workers were killed during strikes for fair conditions. Inspired by these events\, workers' organizations across Europe\, including Italy\, began observing May 1 as a day of protest and solidarity. \nItaly first celebrated Labour Day in 1890\, following a decision by the Second International. The day quickly became associated with workers' rights\, social justice\, and political activism\, particularly among socialist and trade union movements. Demonstrations\, rallies\, and strikes were common in Italian cities\, often met with opposition from authorities in the early years. \nUnder Mussolini's Fascist regime (1922–1943)\, Labour Day was abolished because of its association with socialism and workers' movements. In 1923\, the regime replaced it with the "Festival of Work and Corporative Concord" on April 21\, tied to the founding of Rome\, a symbol of nationalism rather than workers' rights. \nWith the fall of Fascism in 1945\, Labour Day on May 1 was restored as a public holiday in Italy. It once again became a central day for trade unions\, workers\, and left-wing movements\, symbolizing liberation\, solidarity and social progress. \nLabour Day in Italy represents workers' struggles and achievements\, the ongoing fight for fair labor rights\, and the values of solidarity\, democracy\, and social justice.

The movement gained momentum after the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886\, when workers protesting long hours were met with violence. To honor their struggle\, the Second International declared May 1 as International Workers' Day in 1889. \nLuxembourg\, a small industrial country with a growing steel and mining sector\, was influenced by labor movements in neighboring France\, Belgium\, and Germany. Trade unions and socialist organizations began observing May 1 in the early 1900s\, organizing marches and meetings to advocate for workers' rights. At first\, it was not an official holiday\, many workers risked their jobs by taking part in demonstrations. \nAfter World War II\, social and economic reforms swept through Europe\, strengthening labor protections and union influence. In 1948\, Luxembourg officially declared May 1 a public holiday known as "Festival of Labor and Workers". The decision reflected the country's commitment to social dialogue\, cooperation between employers and workers\, and recognition of labor's role in rebuilding postwar Luxembourg. \nToday\, Labour Day in Luxembourg stands as a reminder of the country's social harmony model\, balancing economic growth with strong worker protections. It celebrates not only past struggles but also the ongoing commitment to dignity\, fairness\, and equality in the workplace.

The movement was inspired by the Haymarket affair in Chicago (1886)\, where workers striking for labor rights were met with violence. Following this\, the Second International designated May 1\, 1890\, as the first International Workers' Day. \nThe first May Day demonstrations in Polish lands took place in 1890\, organized by socialist groups under partitions (when Poland was divided between Russia\, Prussia\, and Austria-Hungary). These early marches often faced repression from imperial authorities\, especially in the Russian-ruled areas\, where gatherings and political demonstrations were banned. \nDespite the risks\, workers continued to organize clandestine rallies and marches\, making May 1 a powerful symbol of solidarity and resistance. After Poland regained independence in 1918\, May Day celebrations continued\, often marked by trade union parades and public speeches\, though they remained politically charged events. \nAfter World War II\, when Poland came under Communist rule\, Labour Day was transformed into a major state holiday. In 1950\, the government made May 1 an official national holiday\, replacing traditional May Day demonstrations with state-organized parades that showcased socialist achievements. \nThe holiday became one of the central events in the People's Republic of Poland's political calendar\, symbolizing the unity of workers under socialism\, but also losing much of its grassroots meaning. \nFollowing the fall of communism in 1989\, the political symbolism of Labour Day changed. The holiday remained on the calendar but was reclaimed by trade unions and workers' groups as a day to advocate for fair labor\, social rights\, and economic justice.

The movement gained international recognition after the Haymarket affair in Chicago (1886)\, where workers striking for labor rights faced violent repression. In 1889\, the Second International declared May 1 as International Workers' Day\, inspiring demonstrations across Europe and beyond. \nThe first Labour Day celebration in Portugal took place on May 1\, 1890\, organized by trade unions and socialist groups in Lisbon and Porto. These early events focused on workers' unity\, social justice\, and political reform\, including demands for shorter work hours and better living conditions. However\, the movement was often suppressed by authorities\, and celebrations were sometimes banned or heavily monitored\, especially under conservative governments. \nAfter the military coup of 1926\, Portugal fell under the Estado Novo regime led by António de Oliveira Salazar. During this dictatorship\, which lasted nearly five decades\, May 1 celebrations were outlawed\, as the regime promoted its own corporatist labor system that discouraged free unions and strikes. \nThe government replaced Labour Day with the "Day of the Mother and the Homeland" to shift focus away from worker solidarity and toward nationalist propaganda. Despite this\, underground movements and unions continued to observe May 1 secretly. \nOn April 25\, 1974\, the Carnation Revolution peacefully overthrew the Estado Novo dictatorship\, ending decades of repression. Just six days later\, on May 1\, 1974\, Labour Day was celebrated freely for the first time in nearly 50 years. The event symbolized not only the return of workers' freedoms but also the rebirth of Portuguese democracy. \nSince 1974\, May 1 has been an official national holiday in Portugal. Today\, Labour Day in Portugal stands as both a tribute to the labor movement and a celebration of democracy.

It commemorates the struggle for workers' rights\, particularly the campaign for the eight-hour workday\, following the Haymarket affair in Chicago (1886). \nIn many countries\, including Gibraltar's neighboring Spain and the United Kingdom\, May 1 became recognized as International Workers' Day or Labour Day\, symbolizing solidarity and social progress. \nGibraltar\, as a British Overseas Territory\, historically followed the UK's system of bank and public holidays. However\, over time\, the community began to give May 1 a local identity\, reflecting both its British and Mediterranean influences. \nIn the 20th century\, as workers' organizations and trade unions in Gibraltar gained prominence\, May Day gradually evolved into a day of recognition for workers' contributions to the territory's economy and public life. \nAfter World War II\, Gibraltar underwent major social and economic transformations. The rise of workers' unions gave the labor movement a stronger voice. During the mid-20th century\, May Day was increasingly associated with trade union solidarity and public gatherings\, though on a smaller scale than in larger European countries. \nIn the late 20th century\, May Day in Gibraltar transformed from a purely labor-focused commemoration into a public celebration for all residents. Today\, May Day in Gibraltar is a public holiday celebrated across the territory. It reflects Gibraltar's values of community\, inclusion\, and celebration of labor\, while also marking the arrival of spring.

The date commemorates the Haymarket affair of May 1886 in Chicago\, USA\, where workers striking for the eight-hour workday were met with violent repression. The tragic event inspired labor movements worldwide to adopt May 1 as a day to honor workers and demand better conditions. \nIn the late 1800s and early 1900s\, Mexico's workforce faced harsh conditions\, long hours\, low wages\, and little legal protection. Workers began organizing under the influence of global labor struggles and socialist ideas. \nThe Mexican Revolution transformed labor rights into a national cause. Revolutionary leaders supported social justice and introduced constitutional reform. The result was the Constitution of 1917\, one of the most progressive of its time. The reforms in this Constitution placed workers at the heart of Mexico's post-revolutionary identity. \nMay 1 was first officially celebrated in Mexico in 1913\, organized by emerging unions and labor activists. In 1923\, the government of President Álvaro Obregón formally recognized May 1 as a national public holiday\, making it one of Mexico's key civic observances. The day became a symbol of the unity between the state and organized labor\, particularly under the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI)\, which ruled for much of the 20th century. \nFor many\, Labour Day is also a day of rest\, recognizing the dignity and contributions of workers to national development.

The event inspired global labor movements\, and May 1 was adopted as an international day to recognize workers' rights\, social justice\, and labor solidarity. \nThe tradition reached Morocco during the French protectorate era (1912–1956)\, when industrialization and the rise of urban labor centers brought about the formation of workers' unions. Initially\, Labour Day activities were limited and tightly controlled by colonial authorities\, who viewed labor organizing with suspicion. \nMoroccan workers gradually began to use the day to demand fair wages\, better working conditions\, and respect for labor rights\, often aligning with broader nationalist movements calling for independence and social equality. \nFollowing Morocco's independence\, Labour Day was officially recognized as a national holiday. The new government under King Mohammed V and later King Hassan II acknowledged the importance of labor unions in shaping social and economic policy. \nThroughout the 1960s to 1990s\, the day often served as a venue for political expression and social demands\, with union parades\, demonstrations\, and speeches focusing on issues like wages\, working hours\, and workers' safety. It symbolized not only workers' rights but also freedom of association and democratic participation in Morocco's developing society. \nLabour Day in Morocco reflects both international labor solidarity and local social progress. It is a day to honor workers across all sectors and to reaffirm the importance of dignity\, equality\, and fair opportunity in the workplace.

The event became a symbol of the global struggle for workers' rights and social justice\, leading to the adoption of May 1 as International Workers' Day by labor movements worldwide. \nThe celebration of Labour Day in Albania began in the early 20th century\, during a period of growing industrialization and political activism. Albanian workers and trade unions\, influenced by European socialist movements\, embraced the May 1 tradition as a day to demand better working conditions\, fair wages\, and labor equality. After Albania's independence in 1912\, the observance remained informal but symbolically important among urban workers. \nAfter World War II\, when Enver Hoxha's communist government came to power\, Labour Day was elevated to one of the most significant national holidays. Despite its political tone\, it also provided a rare day of rest and celebration for ordinary citizens. \nWith the collapse of communism in 1991\, the ideological meaning of Labour Day shifted dramatically. The grand parades ended\, but May 1 remained an official public holiday. Today\, the day focuses more on workers' rights\, fair employment\, and social dialogue rather than political propaganda. The government and employers often use the occasion to reaffirm commitments to improving labor standards and economic well-being. \nLabour Day remains a universal symbol of solidarity and a reminder of the struggles that shaped modern labor rights. In Albania\, it serves as both a celebration of working people and a call for continued social and economic justice in a rapidly changing society.

The event became a symbol of the global struggle for workers' rights and social justice\, leading to the adoption of May 1 as International Workers' Day by labor movements worldwide. \nIn Latvia\, Labour Day was first celebrated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, when the region was still part of the Russian Empire. Inspired by socialist movements in Europe\, Latvian workers' organizations began holding public gatherings and demonstrations to demand better pay\, safer workplaces\, and the right to organize. \nAfter Latvia gained independence in 1918\, May 1 continued to be marked by trade unions and left-leaning groups\, though it sometimes carried political tensions due to differing ideologies among parties. \nWhen Latvia was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940\, May 1 was declared an official state holiday under the name "International Workers' Solidarity Day". Under the Soviet regime\, it became one of the most important political holidays. Despite the political propaganda\, for many citizens\, it also served as a day of rest\, celebration\, and social gathering\, often marking the beginning of spring festivities. \nWith the Restoration of Latvian Independence in 1990\, the political meaning of Labour Day changed dramatically. The holiday was initially removed from the list of official state celebrations due to its association with Soviet ideology. However\, as Latvia integrated into democratic Europe\, May 1 regained recognition. \nIn 2002\, Latvia officially reinstated Labour Day (Darba svētki) as a public holiday\, recognizing both the contributions of workers and the universal values of fair labor and equality. \nToday\, Labour Day in Latvia has a dual character. It honors the economic and social role of workers in building the nation. It also marks the arrival of spring\, making it a time for relaxation\, family picnics\, and cultural events.

The event became a symbol of the global struggle for workers' rights and social justice\, leading to the adoption of May 1 as International Workers' Day by labor movements worldwide. \nRomania's first Labour Day celebration took place in 1890\, just one year after it was adopted internationally. It was organized by socialist workers' groups in Bucharest and Iași\, featuring public gatherings and speeches advocating for better working conditions\, fair wages\, and labor rights. \nEarly celebrations often faced police repression\, as the movement was seen as politically subversive by the authorities of the time. Despite this\, the observance gained popularity among industrial workers\, trade unions\, and intellectuals sympathetic to social reform. \nAfter World War I and the Great Union of 1918\, Romania experienced industrial growth and urban expansion. Labour Day continued to be marked by workers' demonstrations\, especially in major cities. However\, it remained unofficial\, with varying degrees of tolerance depending on the political climate. By the 1930s\, the rise of authoritarianism and political tensions limited labor activism\, though socialist groups continued to observe May 1 as a day of worker solidarity. \nFollowing the establishment of the communist regime in 1947\, May 1 became one of the most important state holidays in Romania. The day was transformed from a grassroots labor movement into a government-orchestrated celebration of the socialist worker. \nAfter the fall of communism in December 1989\, Labour Day remained a public holiday\, but its meaning shifted dramatically. The political overtones of the past were replaced by a focus on leisure and recreation. Today\, May 1 is widely regarded as a non-political holiday\, associated with the arrival of spring and outdoor festivities rather than labor protests.

The key turning point came in Chicago\, USA\, in May 1886\, when workers organized mass strikes demanding "eight hours for work\, eight hours for rest\, and eight hours for what we will". \nThe protest led to the Haymarket Affair\, where violence between demonstrators and police caused several deaths. In 1889\, the Second International declared May 1 as International Workers' Day\, to honor those who had died in the struggle for workers' rights and to promote global labor solidarity. \nRussia was among the first European countries to embrace May 1 as a day of protest and solidarity. The first Labour Day demonstration in Russia took place in St. Petersburg in 1891\, organized secretly by Marxist workers and socialists. \nAfter the 1917 October Revolution\, which brought the Bolsheviks to power\, May 1 was declared an official public holiday "Day of International Workers' Solidarity". The new Soviet government viewed Labour Day as a symbol of socialist victory and unity among workers worldwide. \nThe first official May Day parade in Moscow's Red Square took place in 1918\, featuring banners proclaiming "Peace\, Labor\, and May". Throughout the 1920s and 1930s\, May 1 became one of the most important state holidays in the USSR\, second only to the anniversary of the October Revolution (November 7). \nUnder the Soviet Union\, Labour Day evolved from a workers' protest into a grand state celebration of socialist progress. For many\, however\, May 1 was also a day of community and joy\, a spring holiday that blended patriotism with the celebration of nature's renewal. \nAfter the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991\, the new Russian Federation sought to redefine many state holidays. The political symbolism of May 1 diminished\, but its popularity as a holiday of rest and leisure endured. In 1992\, it was officially renamed "Spring and Labour Day" to reflect a more neutral\, seasonal meaning. \nToday\, May 1 remains one of Russia's most celebrated public holidays\, marking the arrival of spring and honoring the dignity of work. For most Russians\, it is a holiday of rest\, friendship\, and optimism — a continuation of tradition without the political weight of the past.

The defining moment occurred in Chicago\, USA\, in May 1886\, when labor unions launched mass strikes demanding the eight-hour workday. \nThe protests culminated in the Haymarket Affair\, during which violence between demonstrators and police led to deaths on both sides. In 1889\, the Second International declared May 1 as International Workers' Day\, to commemorate those who died in the struggle for workers' rights and to promote global labor solidarity. \nUnder British colonial rule\, Hong Kong did not initially recognize May 1 as a public holiday. In the early 20th century\, Hong Kong's labor force consisted mainly of Chinese workers who often faced low wages\, long hours\, and poor working conditions. \nLabor organizations\, such as the Chinese Seamen's Union\, began forming in the 1920s and occasionally organized strikes and protests to demand fair treatment. A significant labor event in Hong Kong's history was the 1922 Seamen's Strike\, which brought much of the colony's shipping industry to a halt and resulted in some wage improvements. However\, despite such movements\, Labour Day remained an unofficial observance for decades. \nAfter World War II\, as Hong Kong's economy began to recover\, labor issues became more prominent. The 1950s–1970s saw the rise of organized labor unions\, many affiliated with either pro-Beijing or pro-Taipei political factions. \nDuring this time\, May Day rallies were often politically charged and symbolized the broader struggle for workers' dignity and unity across the Chinese-speaking world. Still\, Labour Day did not have official recognition\, and participation was largely voluntary. \nIn 1997\, Hong Kong was handed over from Britain to China\, becoming a Special Administrative Region (SAR) under the "one country\, two systems" principle. Two years later\, in 1999\, Labour Day (May 1) was officially declared a public holiday by the Hong Kong SAR Government. The decision aligned Hong Kong with mainland China\, where Labour Day has been an official holiday since 1949\, following the founding of the People's Republic of China. \nToday\, Labour Day in Hong Kong is primarily a day of rest and leisure\, but it also retains its social and symbolic significance. While Labour Day celebrations are generally low-key compared to mainland China's grand parades\, the day still serves as a platform for civic dialogue on social and economic justice.

Its origins trace back to the 1886 Haymarket Affair in Chicago\, where workers protested for the eight-hour workday. \nIn Indonesia\, Labour Day celebrations date back to the early 20th century\, during the Dutch colonial period\, when workers began forming unions to demand fair treatment and better conditions. However\, under both colonial rule and early post-independence governments\, labor activism was often restricted due to political tensions and concerns over communism. \nDuring the New Order era (1966–1998)\, May Day events were largely suppressed\, as the Suharto government associated labor movements with political opposition. After the fall of Suharto and the beginning of the Reformasi era\, workers' rights gained renewed recognition. \nFinally\, in 2014\, the Indonesian government officially declared May 1 a national public holiday\, marking a major milestone in the recognition of workers' contributions to the nation's progress. Since then\, Labour Day has been commemorated across the country through marches\, speeches\, and cultural events\, symbolizing solidarity and the ongoing pursuit of social justice for workers.

The event became a symbol of the international struggle for labor rights\, and May 1 was later recognized worldwide as International Workers' Day. \nIn Macau\, which was under Portuguese administration until 1999\, Labour Day gradually gained prominence in the early 20th century alongside the spread of worker associations and labor unions throughout southern China. Portuguese colonial authorities officially recognized May 1 as a public holiday in the 1970s\, aligning Macau with international labor observances. \nAfter Macau's return to China in 1999 and the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR)\, Labour Day continued to be observed as an official public holiday under the "One Country\, Two Systems" framework. The celebration emphasizes respect for the working population and the value of labor in Macau's economy\, particularly in sectors such as tourism\, hospitality\, and construction. \nToday\, Labour Day in Macau is marked by union-organized events\, parades\, and community gatherings\, as well as performances and cultural activities celebrating workers' contributions. It serves as both a tribute to the global labor movement and a day of rest and appreciation for the city's diverse workforce.

The holiday traces back to the Haymarket Affair in Chicago (1886)\, when labour activists protested for an eight-hour workday. The International Socialist Congress later declared May 1 as International Workers' Day\, a time to honor the sacrifices and achievements of workers worldwide. \nIn the early 20th century\, Belarus\, then part of the Russian Empire\, saw rising industrialization and growing workers' movements influenced by socialist ideals. After the 1917 Russian Revolution\, May 1 was officially recognized as a public holiday throughout the Soviet Union\, including the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic. It became a major state celebration emphasizing solidarity\, productivity\, and the dignity of labour. \nDuring the Soviet era\, Labour Day was one of the most prominent holidays of the year. It featured large parades\, speeches\, red banners\, and cultural performances\, highlighting the achievements of workers\, farmers\, and engineers. The day also served as a symbol of unity among socialist nations and a reminder of the collective effort to build a better society. \nAfter Belarus gained independence in 1991\, May 1 remained an official public holiday\, but its tone evolved from political demonstration to community celebration. Today\, it is marked by family gatherings\, concerts\, fairs\, and springtime festivities\, with fewer political overtones. \nIn modern Belarus\, Labour Day continues to honor the value of work and social progress\, while also symbolizing hope\, renewal\, and the spirit of togetherness that comes with the arrival of spring.

The day traces back to the Haymarket protests in Chicago in 1886\, when workers demanded an eight-hour workday. In 1889\, the Second International\, a congress of socialist and labour parties held in Paris\, declared May 1 as International Workers' Day\, a date for global demonstrations of solidarity. \nBelgium quickly embraced the movement. The first May Day demonstration in Belgium took place in 1890\, organized by socialist groups and trade unions demanding the universal right to vote\, which at the time was limited to property-owning men. Over time\, May 1 became a symbol not only of labour rights but also of social and democratic reform. \nBy the early 20th century\, the day had become a major annual event for the Belgian Labour Party (POB/BWP) and trade unions\, combining political rallies with parades\, songs and community gatherings. After World War II\, in recognition of its significance to Belgian society\, May 1 was officially declared a national public holiday in 1948\, known as Fête du Travail in French and Dag van de Arbeid in Dutch. \nTraditionally\, the day has been marked by union marches\, political speeches\, and cultural festivities\, particularly in Brussels\, Liège\, Charleroi\, and Ghent\, where socialist movements have deep roots. Red flags and carnations\, symbols of the labour movement\, often feature prominently in celebrations. \nToday\, while the political dimension remains important\, Labour Day in Belgium has also evolved into a broader celebration of social solidarity\, human rights\, and community spirit. Many Belgians use the day to reflect on the value of work\, enjoy family time\, and welcome the spring season\, blending activism with festivity in the country's long tradition of balancing progress and togetherness.

The date was adopted by labor organizations worldwide as a symbol of workers' unity and rights. \nIn Brazil\, the early observance of May 1 began in the late 1800s\, especially in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro\, where industrialization was creating a new working class. Workers began organizing demonstrations\, rallies and strikes demanding better wages\, shorter working hours and improved conditions. \nIn 1925\, under President Artur Bernardes\, May 1 was officially declared a national holiday. However\, it was during the presidency of Getúlio Vargas (1930–1945) that Labour Day became deeply institutionalized as part of Brazil's political and social identity. \nVargas\, who positioned himself as the "father of the workers"\, used May 1 as a day to promote labor reforms and government achievements. Under his rule\, key labor laws were established\, including the Consolidação das Leis do Trabalho (CLT) in 1943\, which regulated working hours\, wages\, vacation rights and labor protections\, many of which still form the foundation of Brazilian labor law today. \nThroughout the 20th century\, May 1 evolved from a day of protest into a national celebration of labor and citizenship\, blending political messaging\, cultural festivities\, and public recognition of workers' contributions. Under the military regime (1964–1985)\, the holiday's tone became more controlled and ceremonial\, but with the return of democracy\, it regained its spirit of activism and solidarity. \nToday\, Labour Day in Brazil remains both festive and reflective. The holiday also serves as a platform for addressing ongoing issues such as economic inequality\, job security\, and social rights\, continuing the legacy of the early labor movement.

The immediate cause was the attempt by the French to transfer the remaining members of the Spanish royal family out of Madrid. \nCrowds gathered at the Royal Palace\, and when violence broke out\, citizens armed themselves with whatever weapons they could find such as tones and even household tools to resist the French. \nFighting spread across the city\, with civilians\, artisans and even women joining the resistance. \nThe French brutally repressed the uprising\, executing hundreds of Madrileños by firing squad the next day (famously depicted in Francisco de Goya's painting The Third of May 1808). \nThough the revolt failed militarily\, it became a symbol of national resistance against foreign occupation. The events of May 2 sparked the Spanish War of Independence (1808–1814)\, during which Spain\, with British and Portuguese support\, eventually expelled French forces. \nThroughout the 19th century\, the heroes of May 2 were remembered through monuments\, processions\, and public ceremonies. \nWith the creation of Spain's autonomous communities in 1983\, the Community of Madrid chose May 2 as its official holiday. It honors both the historic uprising and the modern identity of Madrid as an autonomous region within Spain.

It was the first modern written constitution in Europe and the second in the world (after the U.S. Constitution of 1787). The document aimed to strengthen the Commonwealth\, modernize its political system\, and limit the abuses of the nobility that had weakened the state. \nThe Constitution was opposed by conservative nobles and foreign powers—particularly Russia and Prussia\, which feared its influence. In 1792\, Russia invaded Poland with the support of Polish opponents in the Confederation of Targowica\, leading to the collapse of constitutional reform. \nThe Second and Third Partitions of Poland (1793 and 1795) soon followed\, erasing Poland from the map of Europe for 123 years. \nDespite Poland's loss of independence\, May 3 became a symbol of national pride and resistance throughout the 19th century. Poles celebrated it secretly under foreign occupation\, viewing it as a reminder of their national identity and democratic ideals. The day inspired patriotic movements and uprisings\, keeping the idea of independence alive. \nAfter Poland regained independence in 1918\, Constitution Day was officially reinstated as a national holiday in 1919. It was celebrated with parades\, speeches\, and religious ceremonies\, symbolizing both the rebirth of the Polish state and the enduring spirit of 1791. \nAfter World War II\, under Soviet influence\, the communist authorities banned Constitution Day in 1951\, considering it a symbol of "bourgeois nationalism". Instead\, they promoted May 1 (Labour Day) as the state's primary spring holiday. Nevertheless\, May 3 remained a powerful symbol of resistance\, and underground commemorations continued throughout the communist era. \nFollowing the fall of communism in 1989\, the new democratic government reinstated May 3 as an official national holiday. Today\, Constitution Day stands as one of Poland's most important national holidays.

This document replaced the Meiji Constitution of 1889\, transforming Japan from an imperial state under the emperor's sovereignty into a democratic nation founded on the sovereignty of the people\, respect for human rights and the renunciation of war. \nAfter Japan's defeat in World War II\, the Allied Occupation led by the United States pushed for sweeping political reforms. A new constitution was drafted under the supervision of General Douglas MacArthur's staff but refined and adopted by Japanese lawmakers. The result was the Constitution of Japan\, promulgated on November 3\, 1946 and officially enacted on May 3\, 1947. \nThe new constitution introduced three key principles: \n– Sovereignty of the people\, political power derives from the people\, not the emperor.\n– Respect for fundamental human rights\, ensuring freedoms such as speech\, assembly\, and equality.\n– Renunciation of war\, article 9 declares that Japan will not maintain military forces for warfare. \nConstitution Day became a national holiday in 1948\, intended as a time for citizens to reflect on democracy and peace. It is now part of Golden Week\, one of Japan's most festive holiday periods\, during which the National Diet Building and government institutions open to the public for tours and special exhibitions celebrating Japan's democratic values.

His coronation was conducted in a grand ceremony rich in Hindu-Buddhist rituals\, symbolizing both spiritual and temporal authority. During his reign\, May 5 was observed annually as Coronation Day in Thailand. \nKing Rama X (Maha Vajiralongkorn) ascended the throne on December 1\, 2016\, and was officially crowned on May 4\, 2019. Beginning in 2020\, the Thai government rescheduled Coronation Day to May 4 to commemorate the date of his formal anointment as king.

It marked the start of summer in the Celtic calendar. Bealtaine was one of the four great Celtic fire festivals (alongside Samhain\, Imbolc\, and Lughnasadh). \nAcross Europe\, May Day also became associated with workers' rights and the labor movement in the 19th century. It honored struggles for fair working conditions\, especially the 8-hour workday. \nWhile Ireland had deep folk traditions for May 1st\, the political side of May Day (marches and union rallies) also became important in cities like Dublin. \nIreland officially introduced the May Bank Holiday in 1994. Set for the first Monday in May\, it provided a long weekend for workers and families. \nThis modern bank holiday merged the ancient festival spirit of Bealtaine with the contemporary labor associations of May Day. Today\, the May Bank Holiday is seen as the unofficial start of summer.

These festivals included dancing\, fairs and community gatherings. \nMay Day also became associated with workers' rights in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, particularly after the labor movements of the 1880s and the recognition of International Workers' Day on May 1. \nIn 1978\, the UK government introduced the Early May Bank Holiday\, fixed to the first Monday in May\, giving workers a guaranteed long weekend. \nThe Isle of Man\, while self-governing\, aligned many of its bank holidays with the UK\, and the Early May Bank Holiday was adopted on the island around the same time. \nUnlike distinctly Manx holidays such as Tynwald Day or the TT Bank Holiday\, the Early May Bank Holiday does not have unique Isle of Man traditions. \nInstead\, it reflects broader seasonal and labor-related observances\, often marked by spring fairs\, leisure activities and family time. \nToday\, the Early May Bank Holiday remains a modern addition to the Isle of Man's calendar\, offering a spring break and connecting the island to wider British and European traditions of celebrating the start of summer and honoring workers.

Traditional customs included maypole dancing\, crowning the May Queen\, and village gatherings. \nBy the late 19th century\, May 1 also became associated with International Workers' Day\, a global commemoration of labor rights inspired by the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago. Across Europe\, including the British Isles\, it symbolized workers' solidarity and the movement for fair wages and shorter hours. \nIn 1978\, the United Kingdom officially established the Early May Bank Holiday as a national public holiday\, held on the first Monday in May. As a Crown Dependency\, Jersey adopted this public holiday into its own calendar around the same time\, aligning with the UK's schedule but observing it under local jurisdiction. \nWhile its origins are rooted in the labor movement\, the Early May Bank Holiday in Jersey gradually lost its political focus. Instead\, it evolved into a celebration of springtime\, outdoor leisure\, and the start of the island's tourist season. \nToday\, the Early May Bank Holiday is seen as a non-political spring holiday in Jersey\, a time to rest\, enjoy the outdoors\, and mark the transition from spring to summer.

After Korea's liberation in 1945\, Children's Day was revived. \nIn 1946\, the holiday was officially reintroduced\, this time on May 5 (instead of May 1)\, to avoid overlap with International Labour Day. \nIn 1975\, the South Korean government officially designated May 5 as a national holiday. \nChildren's Day is not just a fun holiday but also a reminder of children's dignity\, rights and role as the nation's future.

After just five days of fighting\, the Dutch army surrendered on May 15\, 1940\, following the devastating bombing of Rotterdam. \nThe occupation lasted for five years\, bringing harsh repression\, persecution of Jews and resistance fighters\, forced labor\, and the Hunger Winter (1944–1945)\, which caused mass starvation. \nIn early May 1945\, Allied forces advanced into the Netherlands. \nOn May 4\, 1945\, German forces in the Netherlands\, Northwest Germany\, and Denmark surrendered to Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery in Lüneburg Heath\, Germany. \nOn May 5\, 1945\, at Wageningen\, German commander General Blaskowitz and Canadian General Charles Foulkes negotiated the final surrender of German forces in the Netherlands. \nThis marked the official liberation of the Netherlands. \nThe first Liberation Day celebrations were held on May 5\, 1945\, immediately after the surrender. \nInitially\, each year emphasized remembrance of liberation and the gratitude toward Allied soldiers\, especially the Canadians\, who played a key role. \nIn 1946\, May 5 was declared an annual day of national celebration. \nIn 1960\, it was decided that official nationwide celebrations would be held once every five years (e.g.\, 1960\, 1965\, 1970). \nIn 1990\, the Dutch government declared Liberation Day a national holiday every year\, but it is only a mandatory day off work once every five years.

Its roots stretch back over a thousand years to the Nara Period (710–794)\, when Japan adopted Chinese seasonal festivals known as sekku. May 5 became known as Tango no Sekku\, the "Boys' Festival"\, while March 3 was celebrated as the "Girls' Festival". \nDuring the Edo Period (1603–1868)\, Tango no Sekku became an important samurai celebration\, honoring boys' growth\, strength and the hope that they would grow into brave\, successful men. Families would display samurai armor\, helmets\, and warrior dolls to symbolize courage and protection. Outside\, they raised carp-shaped streamers\, inspired by Chinese legend: a carp that swims upstream transforms into a dragon\, symbolizing perseverance and achievement. \nAfter World War II\, in 1948\, Japan's postwar government redefined the holiday under the new constitution as Children's Day\, making it a national holiday for all children\, regardless of gender. The change reflected democratic ideals of equality\, peace and appreciation for children's happiness and families' well-being. \nToday\, Children's Day marks the final day of Golden Week\, a time of family gatherings\, festivals\, and outdoor celebrations. Carp streamers\, samurai dolls and the traditional sweet kashiwa mochi remain enduring symbols of love\, hope\, and strength for future generations.
