Medieval Hungary honored St. Stephen as both a king and a saint\, guardian of the nation. \nDuring the centuries of Ottoman occupation (16th–17th centuries)\, the day remained a religious observance but was less nationally prominent. Under Habsburg rule\, celebrations of St. Stephen's Day were revived as a way to preserve Hungarian national identity. \nBy the 19th century\, August 20 had grown into a national holiday\, symbolizing Hungary's Christian roots and historical continuity. King Dom João VI relocated the Portuguese court to Rio de Janeiro\, transforming the colony into the seat of the Portuguese Empire. This unprecedented move elevated Brazil's status and fueled the growth of local culture\, commerce and political institutions. \nWhen Napoleon was defeated\, Dom João VI returned to Portugal in 1821\, leaving his son\, Dom Pedro de Alcântara\, as regent in Brazil. However\, Portuguese leaders sought to reduce Brazil back to colonial status\, revoking many of the freedoms it had gained. \nFaced with growing unrest and pressure from nationalist groups\, Dom Pedro sided with Brazilian reformists. On September 7\, 1822\, while traveling near the Ipiranga River in São Paulo\, he received orders from Lisbon demanding his return and Brazil's subjugation. In response\, he drew his sword and declared "Independence or Death!". \nThis event\, known as Cry of Ipiranga\, symbolized Brazil's break from Portugal. Rather than descending into widespread warfare as in other Latin American independence movements\, Brazil's transition was relatively peaceful. \nFollowing the declaration\, Dom Pedro was proclaimed Emperor Pedro I of Brazil on October 12\, 1822\, establishing the Empire of Brazil\, a constitutional monarchy. Portugal officially recognized Brazilian independence in 1825\, after diplomatic negotiations mediated by Great Britain. \nBrazil remained an empire for 67 years until 1889\, when the monarchy was overthrown and the Republic of Brazil was proclaimed. Influenced by the Enlightenment\, the American Revolution (1776)\, and the French Revolution (1789)\, reform-minded leaders in New Spain began to envision freedom from colonial control. \nThe spark for independence came on the night of September 15–16\, 1810\, in the small town of Dolores (now Dolores Hidalgo)\, in the state of Guanajuato. Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla\, a parish priest and advocate for social justice\, rang the church bell in the early hours of September 16 and delivered his historic speech\, now known as the "Cry of Dolores". This moment marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. \nThe war was long and brutal\, lasting 11 years\, with shifting alliances and regional uprisings.
