This document replaced the Meiji Constitution of 1889\, transforming Japan from an imperial state under the emperor's sovereignty into a democratic nation founded on the sovereignty of the people\, respect for human rights and the renunciation of war. \nAfter Japan's defeat in World War II\, the Allied Occupation led by the United States pushed for sweeping political reforms. A new constitution was drafted under the supervision of General Douglas MacArthur's staff but refined and adopted by Japanese lawmakers. The result was the Constitution of Japan\, promulgated on November 3\, 1946 and officially enacted on May 3\, 1947. \nThe new constitution introduced three key principles: \n– Sovereignty of the people\, political power derives from the people\, not the emperor.\n– Respect for fundamental human rights\, ensuring freedoms such as speech\, assembly\, and equality.\n– Renunciation of war\, article 9 declares that Japan will not maintain military forces for warfare. \nConstitution Day became a national holiday in 1948\, intended as a time for citizens to reflect on democracy and peace. It is now part of Golden Week\, one of Japan's most festive holiday periods\, during which the National Diet Building and government institutions open to the public for tours and special exhibitions celebrating Japan's democratic values.

His coronation was conducted in a grand ceremony rich in Hindu-Buddhist rituals\, symbolizing both spiritual and temporal authority. During his reign\, May 5 was observed annually as Coronation Day in Thailand. \nKing Rama X (Maha Vajiralongkorn) ascended the throne on December 1\, 2016\, and was officially crowned on May 4\, 2019. Beginning in 2020\, the Thai government rescheduled Coronation Day to May 4 to commemorate the date of his formal anointment as king.

It marked the start of summer in the Celtic calendar. Bealtaine was one of the four great Celtic fire festivals (alongside Samhain\, Imbolc\, and Lughnasadh). \nAcross Europe\, May Day also became associated with workers' rights and the labor movement in the 19th century. It honored struggles for fair working conditions\, especially the 8-hour workday. \nWhile Ireland had deep folk traditions for May 1st\, the political side of May Day (marches and union rallies) also became important in cities like Dublin. \nIreland officially introduced the May Bank Holiday in 1994. Set for the first Monday in May\, it provided a long weekend for workers and families. \nThis modern bank holiday merged the ancient festival spirit of Bealtaine with the contemporary labor associations of May Day. Today\, the May Bank Holiday is seen as the unofficial start of summer.

During Emperor Diocletian's persecutions of Christians\, Florian was ordered to renounce his faith. He refused\, was arrested\, and executed by being drowned in the Enns River with a heavy stone tied around his neck around the year 304 AD. He was quickly venerated as a martyr\, and his story spread across Central Europe. \nEarly Christians in the region preserved Florian's relics\, and his tomb became a pilgrimage site. Stories of miracles\, especially related to protection from fire and floods\, strengthened his reputation. Devotion to St. Florian spread beyond Austria into Bavaria\, Poland\, and Hungary. \nA monastery was built near the site of his martyrdom\, known today as St. Florian Monastery\, one of the oldest monastic sites in Austria. \nBy the 11th century\, it became a major pilgrimage destination. The monastery later grew into a Baroque landmark and remains the spiritual heart of his veneration. \nFrom the Middle Ages onward\, St. Florian became associated with protection against fire\, floods\, and natural disasters. He was named patron saint of firefighters\, chimney sweeps\, brewers\, and Austria's Upper Austria region. \nHis image\, pouring water over a burning house\, became widespread on houses\, barns\, and public buildings as a protective symbol. \nIn Upper Austria\, it became a deeply rooted regional tradition tied to both religious ceremonies and community identity. \nSince the 19th century\, fire brigades have played a central role in celebrations\, with parades\, blessings of equipment and remembrance ceremonies. Today\, the Austrian Fire Service considers May 4 not only St. Florian's Day but also the official Firefighters' Day.

These festivals included dancing\, fairs and community gatherings. \nMay Day also became associated with workers' rights in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, particularly after the labor movements of the 1880s and the recognition of International Workers' Day on May 1. \nIn 1978\, the UK government introduced the Early May Bank Holiday\, fixed to the first Monday in May\, giving workers a guaranteed long weekend. \nThe Isle of Man\, while self-governing\, aligned many of its bank holidays with the UK\, and the Early May Bank Holiday was adopted on the island around the same time. \nUnlike distinctly Manx holidays such as Tynwald Day or the TT Bank Holiday\, the Early May Bank Holiday does not have unique Isle of Man traditions. \nInstead\, it reflects broader seasonal and labor-related observances\, often marked by spring fairs\, leisure activities and family time. \nToday\, the Early May Bank Holiday remains a modern addition to the Isle of Man's calendar\, offering a spring break and connecting the island to wider British and European traditions of celebrating the start of summer and honoring workers.

Traditional customs included maypole dancing\, crowning the May Queen\, and village gatherings. \nBy the late 19th century\, May 1 also became associated with International Workers' Day\, a global commemoration of labor rights inspired by the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago. Across Europe\, including the British Isles\, it symbolized workers' solidarity and the movement for fair wages and shorter hours. \nIn 1978\, the United Kingdom officially established the Early May Bank Holiday as a national public holiday\, held on the first Monday in May. As a Crown Dependency\, Jersey adopted this public holiday into its own calendar around the same time\, aligning with the UK's schedule but observing it under local jurisdiction. \nWhile its origins are rooted in the labor movement\, the Early May Bank Holiday in Jersey gradually lost its political focus. Instead\, it evolved into a celebration of springtime\, outdoor leisure\, and the start of the island's tourist season. \nToday\, the Early May Bank Holiday is seen as a non-political spring holiday in Jersey\, a time to rest\, enjoy the outdoors\, and mark the transition from spring to summer.

However\, this independence was short-lived. \nIn June 1940\, under the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union\, Latvia was occupied and annexed by the USSR. The following decades brought mass deportations\, political repression\, and suppression of Latvian culture and identity. \nBy the late 1980s\, the Soviet Union began to weaken. These reforms gave rise to national movements across the Baltic States (Estonia\, Latvia\, and Lithuania) calling for greater autonomy and eventually full independence. \nIn Latvia\, the Popular Front of Latvia\, founded in 1988\, became the main political force advocating for sovereignty. The movement emphasized peaceful protest\, national unity\, and cultural revival\, symbolized by the restoration of the Latvian flag\, language\, and songs of freedom. \nOn August 23\, 1989\, approximately two million people from Latvia\, Lithuania\, and Estonia joined hands to form a 600-kilometer human chain known as the Baltic Way\, spanning from Vilnius to Tallinn. \nOn May 4\, 1990\, the Supreme Council of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic convened in Riga and passed the Declaration "On the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia". The document declared that Latvia's 1940 annexation by the USSR was illegal\, and it restored the authority of the 1922 Latvian Constitution. \nAlthough the May 4 declaration marked the legal restoration of independence\, the transition was gradual. The Soviet Union initially refused to recognize the declaration\, and tensions escalated throughout 1990–1991. After the failed Moscow coup in August 1991\, Latvia finally regained full de facto independence on August 21\, 1991\, completing the process that began on May 4\, 1990. \nIndependence Restoration Day is one of Latvia's most important civic observances\, symbolizing peaceful resistance\, national unity and the triumph of democracy.

Its origins are closely tied to Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito) and Japan's postwar history. \nOriginally\, April 29 was celebrated as Emperor Shōwa's Birthday during his reign (1926–1989). After his death\, the day was renamed Greenery Day in 1989\, to honor the late emperor's deep love of nature\, particularly his interest in botany and marine biology\, without directly referencing his wartime legacy. The intent was to retain the holiday while shifting its focus toward environmental appreciation and peace. \nIn 2007\, Greenery Day was officially moved to May 4\, as part of the reorganization of Japan's Golden Week holidays. April 29 was renamed Shōwa Day\, allowing people to reflect on the turbulent yet transformative Shōwa era. \nToday\, Greenery Day encourages people to spend time outdoors\, plant trees\, and cherish Japan's natural beauty. It also symbolizes the nation's ongoing respect for environmental harmony and sustainable living\, aligning with Japan's cultural reverence for nature found in Shinto and Buddhist traditions.

Its origins date back to the early 20th century\, when labourers\, particularly sugar estate workers\, faced harsh working conditions\, long hours and low wages under colonial rule. These hardships gave rise to one of the Caribbean's earliest and most influential labour movements. \nIn the 1930s and 1940s\, the call for better wages and fair treatment grew stronger. The formation of the Antigua Trades and Labour Union (ATLU) in 1939\, led by Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr.\, marked a turning point. The ATLU became a powerful voice for the working class and played a major role in shaping both the country's labour policies and its political future. \nThe first Labour Day celebration took place on May 1\, 1951\, when workers took the day off and gathered for marches and speeches demanding recognition of their rights. Their determination prompted the government to formally designate Labour Day as a public holiday soon after\, making Antigua and Barbuda one of the first Caribbean nations to do so. \nOver time\, the day evolved beyond its union roots into a broader celebration of national unity\, workers' contributions\, and political expression. It remains a day for rallies\, speeches\, parades\, and family festivities\, often featuring performances and beach events. \nToday\, Labour Day continues to honour the sacrifices and achievements of the workers who helped build modern Antigua and Barbuda\, standing as both a tribute to the island's labour pioneers and a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of social and economic equality.

After Korea's liberation in 1945\, Children's Day was revived. \nIn 1946\, the holiday was officially reintroduced\, this time on May 5 (instead of May 1)\, to avoid overlap with International Labour Day. \nIn 1975\, the South Korean government officially designated May 5 as a national holiday. \nChildren's Day is not just a fun holiday but also a reminder of children's dignity\, rights and role as the nation's future.

After just five days of fighting\, the Dutch army surrendered on May 15\, 1940\, following the devastating bombing of Rotterdam. \nThe occupation lasted for five years\, bringing harsh repression\, persecution of Jews and resistance fighters\, forced labor\, and the Hunger Winter (1944–1945)\, which caused mass starvation. \nIn early May 1945\, Allied forces advanced into the Netherlands. \nOn May 4\, 1945\, German forces in the Netherlands\, Northwest Germany\, and Denmark surrendered to Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery in Lüneburg Heath\, Germany. \nOn May 5\, 1945\, at Wageningen\, German commander General Blaskowitz and Canadian General Charles Foulkes negotiated the final surrender of German forces in the Netherlands. \nThis marked the official liberation of the Netherlands. \nThe first Liberation Day celebrations were held on May 5\, 1945\, immediately after the surrender. \nInitially\, each year emphasized remembrance of liberation and the gratitude toward Allied soldiers\, especially the Canadians\, who played a key role. \nIn 1946\, May 5 was declared an annual day of national celebration. \nIn 1960\, it was decided that official nationwide celebrations would be held once every five years (e.g.\, 1960\, 1965\, 1970). \nIn 1990\, the Dutch government declared Liberation Day a national holiday every year\, but it is only a mandatory day off work once every five years.

Its roots stretch back over a thousand years to the Nara Period (710–794)\, when Japan adopted Chinese seasonal festivals known as sekku. May 5 became known as Tango no Sekku\, the "Boys' Festival"\, while March 3 was celebrated as the "Girls' Festival". \nDuring the Edo Period (1603–1868)\, Tango no Sekku became an important samurai celebration\, honoring boys' growth\, strength and the hope that they would grow into brave\, successful men. Families would display samurai armor\, helmets\, and warrior dolls to symbolize courage and protection. Outside\, they raised carp-shaped streamers\, inspired by Chinese legend: a carp that swims upstream transforms into a dragon\, symbolizing perseverance and achievement. \nAfter World War II\, in 1948\, Japan's postwar government redefined the holiday under the new constitution as Children's Day\, making it a national holiday for all children\, regardless of gender. The change reflected democratic ideals of equality\, peace and appreciation for children's happiness and families' well-being. \nToday\, Children's Day marks the final day of Golden Week\, a time of family gatherings\, festivals\, and outdoor celebrations. Carp streamers\, samurai dolls and the traditional sweet kashiwa mochi remain enduring symbols of love\, hope\, and strength for future generations.

The Ottomans\, under Jamal Pasha\, the military governor of Syria\, saw these nationalist activities as treason. \nOn May 6\, 1916\, Jamal Pasha ordered the public execution of dozens of Arab nationalists in Martyrs' Square in Damascus and Beirut. These included writers\, politicians\, and reformers who were accused of conspiring against Ottoman rule. The executions were meant to suppress nationalist sentiment but instead galvanized Arab support for independence. \nThe executions became a symbol of Arab martyrdom and resistance. \nAfter the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the end of the French Mandate\, Syria adopted May 6 as Martyrs' Day\, honoring the 1916 martyrs\, and all Syrians who have died in the struggle for freedom and national dignity. \nSince the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War\, the day has also been used to honor those killed during the conflict and promote narratives of resistance and unity.

The islands remained isolated and loyal to Vichy France for over 17 months. This meant scarce supplies\, and no connection to the Free French forces fighting against Axis powers. \nOn May 27\, 1942\, a Free French naval vessel named Chevreuil arrived in Wallis. The local administration peacefully shifted allegiance from Vichy France to Free France\, marking the islands' entry into the Allied side of the war. \nOn May 28\, 1942\, American forces arrived\, setting up a military base on the island of Wallis to support Pacific operations against Japan. The American military presence transformed the islands' infrastructure and economy. \nAfter the war\, France declared May 8 as Victory Day\, marking the surrender of Germany and the official end of World War II in Europe. \nAs a French territory\, Wallis and Futuna adopted the holiday\, and it remains a public holiday on the islands to this day. \nThe day serves as an opportunity to remember the sacrifices made during the war\, especially the local transition from Vichy rule and the contributions of Free French and Allied forces.

Although the uprising was suppressed\, it became a powerful symbol of Slovak resistance and national pride. \nIn the spring of 1945\, advancing Soviet and Romanian troops\, together with Slovak partisans\, liberated Slovak territory from Nazi control. \nOn May 8\, 1945\, Nazi Germany officially surrendered to the Allies\, ending World War II in Europe. For Slovakia\, this day marked freedom from fascist occupation and the collapse of the collaborationist regime. \nAfter the war\, May 8 was commemorated as Victory Day\, honoring the Allied victory and the sacrifices made during the war. \nDuring the socialist period of Czechoslovakia (1948–1989)\, the holiday was emphasized as a celebration of liberation by the Soviet Red Army\, with large parades and state ceremonies. \nAfter the Velvet Revolution (1989) and the independence of Slovakia (1993)\, the holiday was maintained but given broader meaning: honoring not only Soviet soldiers but also Slovak partisans\, Allied forces\, and all who resisted fascism. \nToday\, May 8 is celebrated in Slovakia as Victory over Fascism Day (Deň víťazstva nad fašizmom)\, a public holiday dedicated to remembering the end of WWII\, the defeat of Nazism\, and the sacrifices of Slovak resistance fighters.

The announcement of victory was greeted with jubilation in France\, which had endured Nazi occupation from 1940 to 1944. Almost immediately\, May 8 was celebrated as a day of victory and liberation. \nIn 1946\, the French government officially declared May 8 a public holiday to commemorate the victory and honor those who sacrificed during the war. In the years following\, different governments debated how to commemorate the date. Some felt it was too focused on war and division\, preferring to highlight broader reconciliation. \nPresident Charles de Gaulle modified the status of May 8. In 1959\, it was downgraded from a fixed public holiday to a day of commemoration\, with ceremonies but no statutory closure of workplaces. \nIn 1975\, President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing went further\, removing May 8 as a public holiday\, though it remained a symbolic day of remembrance. \nIn 1981\, newly elected President François Mitterrand restored May 8 as an official public holiday. This restoration reflected the importance of WWII memories in French society and the desire to formally honor veterans and victims. \nSince 1981\, May 8 has remained a national public holiday in France\, marked by solemn ceremonies\, most notably at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris\, where the President of France lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Over 300\,000 Tajiks were conscripted into the Red Army\, and nearly 92\,000 died\, and tens of thousands more were wounded or never returned. \nThough Tajikistan was far from the frontlines\, the republic contributed agricultural products\, raw materials\, and industrial goods to the Soviet war effort. \nVictory over Nazi Germany on May 9\, 1945\, was celebrated across the USSR\, including in Tajikistan\, as a day of national triumph and mourning. \nIn 1945\, May 9 was officially declared as Victory Day by the Soviet Union. Tajik SSR began commemorating the day with military parades\, ceremonies\, and honors for veterans. \nIn 1965\, Victory Day was declared a non-working public holiday across the USSR to mark the 20th anniversary of victory. \nAfter the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991\, Tajikistan retained May 9 as an official public holiday. The country continued to celebrate the heroism of WWII veterans\, many of whom were still alive in the 1990s. \nVictory Day also gained deeper meaning as Tajikistan emerged from its own civil war (1992–1997)\, reinforcing themes of peace and resilience.

The German occupation began on July 1\, 1940\, after the British government decided the islands were indefensible and evacuated most military forces. \nFor nearly five years\, islanders lived under strict German rule\, facing curfews\, food shortages\, forced labor\, censorship\, and deportations. The occupation deeply affected everyday life\, though many islanders maintained quiet resistance and hope for eventual liberation. \nOn May 8\, 1945\, Germany officially surrendered\, marking Victory in Europe (VE) Day. The next morning\, May 9\, British liberation forces arrived in St. Helier Harbour\, Jersey's capital. The Union Flag was raised again over the island\, symbolizing the end of occupation and the return of freedom. The same day\, Guernsey was also liberated; Alderney and Sark followed shortly after. \nMay 9 was declared Liberation Day\, becoming Jersey's national day of celebration and remembrance. It replaced the traditional May Day festivities as the island's most significant public holiday. \nLiberation Day honors both the joy of freedom and the endurance of those who lived through the occupation—including islanders who were deported\, imprisoned\, or separated from loved ones.

In his declaration\, Schuman proposed uniting Europe's coal and steel industries under a single authority to prevent future wars—an idea that became the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951. This initiative laid the foundation for the modern European Union\, promoting peace\, stability\, and economic cooperation after the devastation of World War II. \nLuxembourg was one of the six founding members of the ECSC (along with France\, Germany\, Italy\, Belgium\, and the Netherlands). Its strategic location and strong support for European integration made it a key player in the early development of the European project. \nAlthough Europe Day was recognized across the EU as a day of European unity since 1985\, it wasn't a public holiday in most countries. \nIn 2019\, Luxembourg became the first EU member state to officially designate May 9 as a public holiday. \nThe move reflected the country's deep commitment to European integration and honored Robert Schuman's legacy as a founding father of the EU. For Luxembourg\, Europe Day is more than a celebration\, it's a reminder of the nation's historic contribution to European unity.

The war became one of the deadliest and most decisive conflicts in human history\, claiming the lives of over 27 million Soviet citizens\, both military and civilian. \nDespite the enormous loss and devastation\, the Soviet Union played a crucial role in defeating Nazi Germany\, with landmark battles such as Stalingrad (1942–1943) and Kursk (1943) turning the tide in favor of the Allies. The final Soviet offensive ended with the capture of Berlin in May 1945. \nOn May 8\, 1945\, Germany signed an act of unconditional surrender in Reims\, France\, marking the end of the war in Europe. However\, because of time zone differences\, the surrender took effect in Moscow after midnight\, on May 9. Thus\, the Soviet Union declared May 9\, 1945\, as Victory Day. The next day\, Joseph Stalin announced the victory to the Soviet people\, and massive celebrations erupted across Moscow and other cities. \nIn 1946\, May 9 became an official holiday\, though it was not yet a public day off. During the late 1940s and 1950s\, official celebrations were subdued. Veterans\, however\, continued to observe the day privately\, visiting war memorials and honoring fallen comrades. \nIn 1965\, on the 20th anniversary of victory\, Leonid Brezhnev restored Victory Day as a major state holiday and declared it a non-working day across the USSR. In the 1970s and 1980s\, Victory Day became one of the most significant Soviet holidays. \nThe 1985\, 40th anniversary saw massive celebrations and recognition of war veterans as heroes of the nation. \nFollowing the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991\, newly independent republics adopted their own forms of remembrance\, but Russia retained May 9 as its principal Victory Day holiday. In modern Russia\, the day serves both as a commemoration of sacrifice and a display of national strength and continuity.

The day honors the extraordinary sacrifice\, courage\, and endurance of the Belarusian people\, who suffered more than almost any other nation during the war. \nWhen Nazi forces invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941\, Belarus—then the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR)—became one of the first targets. Within weeks\, most of the country was occupied\, and it endured some of the war's most brutal atrocities. Entire villages were burned\, and countless civilians were executed. An estimated 2.2 to 2.5 million Belarusians\, about one-quarter of the population\, died during the conflict. \nDespite this devastation\, Belarus became a center of partisan resistance. Tens of thousands of Belarusian men and women joined underground movements that sabotaged enemy operations and aided the Soviet Army. Their courage helped weaken Nazi control and contributed to the eventual liberation of the country in July 1944 during Operation Bagration\, one of the war's largest and most decisive offensives. \nFollowing the end of World War II in Europe on May 9\, 1945\, the Soviet Union declared the day Victory Day\, commemorating the triumph over fascism and honoring all who had fought and fallen. In Belarus\, the day quickly became a symbol not only of victory but also of collective endurance and national rebirth. \nAfter gaining independence in 1991\, Belarus retained Victory Day as a national holiday\, continuing many of the traditions established during Soviet times. The day is marked by military parades in Minsk\, wreath-laying ceremonies at war memorials\, veterans' gatherings\, and fireworks displays. \nToday\, Victory Day remains a deeply personal and national occasion—a time for honoring veterans\, remembering the fallen\, and celebrating peace. It reminds Belarusians of their extraordinary resilience during one of the darkest chapters in human history and of their lasting commitment to preserving the memory of those who gave their lives for freedom.

Christian churches\, especially in the Pacific\, were early promoters of the celebration\, tying it to religious services and family values. \nSamoa\, with its strong Christian foundation and emphasis on family and respect for parents\, embraced Mother's Day early in the 20th century through church influence. \nBy the mid-1900s\, it had become a well-established observance in Samoan communities\, marked with special church services\, family gatherings and feasting. \nRecognizing the importance of mothers in both family life and Samoan society\, the Government of Samoa declared Mother's Day a public holiday\, making it unique among Pacific nations. \nMother's Day is one of Samoa's most beloved holidays\, blending Christian devotion\, Samoan cultural traditions and modern gifting customs. It symbolizes the central role of women and mothers in Samoan social life\, and the extra public holiday highlights how deeply valued motherhood is in the nation.

It was introduced to Thailand during the Sukhothai period and formalized in the Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin eras. \nThe ceremony consists of two parts Phuetcha Mongkhon Ceremony (Buddhist) and Raek Na Khwan Ceremony (Brahmin/Hindu). \n– Phuetcha Mongkhon Ceremony (Buddhist) was held in the Grand Palace\, where monks bless rice seeds to be used during the ploughing rite. \n– Raek Na Khwan Ceremony (Brahmin/Hindu) was held at Sanam Luang\, and it features symbolic ploughing by royal representatives and sacred oxen. \nThe ceremony was discontinued in the 1920s\, and it was revived in 1960 by King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) to reestablish the monarchy-agriculture bond. Since then\, it has been overseen by the King or Crown Prince\, conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture\, and televised nationwide. \nRitual Details: \nThe Lord of the Ceremony (a high-ranking official) performs a ceremonial ploughing of the field using a golden plough pulled by sacred white oxen. \nThe oxen are offered trays of food: rice\, corn\, beans\, grass\, water and alcohol. The choice of food they eat is believed to predict the coming season's agricultural fortune. \nBlessed rice seeds are then sown by court officials as a symbol of abundance.

This mutiny became the seed of the SPLA\, which formally emerged as the military wing of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). \nThe SPLA's mission was not only to resist Khartoum but also to fight for greater equality\, self-determination and autonomy for Southern Sudanese people. \nOver the next two decades\, the SPLA became the dominant rebel force in the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005). The war was one of the longest and deadliest in Africa\, costing over 2 million lives and displacing millions more. \nIn the 1990s and 2000s\, the SPLA remained the central military organization representing Southern Sudanese aspirations despite internal divisions. \nIn 2005\, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed between SPLM/A and the Sudanese government. This agreement granted South Sudan regional autonomy and the right to hold an independence referendum. \nIn 2011\, South Sudan voted overwhelmingly for independence. On July 9\, 2011\, the Republic of South Sudan was born\, and the SPLA became its national army. \nSPLA Day is both a patriotic holiday and a memorial day\, acknowledging the suffering of civilians as well as the role of soldiers in achieving independence\, and it honors the sacrifice and resilience of those who fought in the struggle.

May 17\, the publication date of Rosalía's book\, was chosen as the holiday. \nThe day initially focused solely on honoring Rosalía de Castro\, widely regarded as the most iconic Galician poet and a central figure in reviving Galician language and identity. \nDuring the late Franco dictatorship (1939–1975)\, the public use of Galician was restricted\, but the celebration of Galician Literature Day persisted\, becoming a subtle act of cultural resistance. With Spain's transition to democracy and the Statute of Autonomy of Galicia (1981)\, the day gained even greater recognition as a public holiday. \nToday\, May 17 is a public holiday in Galicia\, fully dedicated to its language and literature. \nSchools\, cultural organizations and institutions across Galicia organize activities to promote Galician writers\, books and the use of the Galician language (galego) in everyday life.

This constitution defined the structure of government\, citizens' rights and freedoms\, and the principles of neutrality and sovereignty. \nThe 1992 Constitution marked Turkmenistan's official transition from Soviet rule to an independent republic\, affirming the country's political and legal identity. \nSince then\, May 18 has been observed as Constitution Day\, celebrating statehood and the rule of law. \nFlag Day: \nTurkmenistan adopted its national flag on February 19\, 1992\, soon after independence. For several years\, February 19 was celebrated as National Flag Day. \nIn 2018\, the Turkmen government decided to combine Constitution Day (May 18) and Flag Day (February 19) into a single national holiday celebrated on May 18.

On June 26\, 1960\, it gained independence as the State of Somaliland and was recognized by several countries\, including the UK. Just five days later\, on July 1\, 1960\, it voluntarily united with the former Italian Somaliland to form the Somali Republic. \nThe union soon became troubled: political imbalances\, marginalization of Somalilanders\, and authoritarian rule strained relations. \nDuring the 1980s\, under President Siad Barre\, the Somali government brutally suppressed opposition in the north\, including mass killings and destruction of cities like Hargeisa. These events fueled Somalilanders' determination to break away from Somalia. \nFollowing the collapse of Somalia's central government in 1991\, the Somali National Movement (SNM)\, along with clan elders and local leaders\, convened in Burao. \nOn May 18\, 1991\, they declared Somaliland independent\, reviving the sovereignty first achieved in June 1960. Hargeisa was established as the capital. \nMay 18 became Somaliland Sovereignty Day\, the most important national holiday in the region. It marks Somaliland's de facto independence\, though it remains unrecognized internationally. \nSince then\, Somaliland has developed its own government\, constitution\, elections\, and institutions\, often praised as more stable than the rest of Somalia.

It is observed with Torah study\, seating dairy foods\, and agricultural festivals\, making it both a deeply spiritual and earthly celebration. \nWhen is Shavuot?\nShavuot in Israel is on the 6th of Sivan in the Hebrew calendar (usually late May or early June). \nThe following is the list of Shavuot from 2020 to 2049. \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n HolidayDateWeekday\n\n\n\n \n ShavuotMay 29\, 2020Friday \n \n ShavuotMay 17\, 2021Monday \n \n ShavuotJun 05\, 2022Sunday \n \n ShavuotMay 26\, 2023Friday \n \n ShavuotJun 12\, 2024Wednesday \n \n ShavuotJun 02\, 2025Monday \n \n ShavuotMay 22\, 2026Friday \n \n ShavuotJun 11\, 2027Friday \n \n ShavuotMay 31\, 2028Wednesday \n \n ShavuotMay 20\, 2029Sunday \n \n ShavuotJun 07\, 2030Friday \n \n ShavuotMay 28\, 2031Wednesday \n \n ShavuotMay 16\, 2032Sunday \n \n ShavuotJun 03\, 2033Friday \n \n ShavuotMay 24\, 2034Wednesday \n \n ShavuotJun 13\, 2035Wednesday \n \n ShavuotJun 01\, 2036Sunday \n \n ShavuotMay 20\, 2037Wednesday \n \n ShavuotJun 09\, 2038Wednesday \n \n ShavuotMay 29\, 2039Sunday \n \n ShavuotMay 18\, 2040Friday \n \n ShavuotJun 05\, 2041Wednesday \n \n ShavuotMay 25\, 2042Sunday \n \n ShavuotJun 14\, 2043Sunday \n \n ShavuotJun 01\, 2044Wednesday \n \n ShavuotMay 22\, 2045Monday \n \n ShavuotJun 10\, 2046Sunday \n \n ShavuotMay 31\, 2047Friday \n \n ShavuotMay 18\, 2048Monday \n \n ShavuotJun 06\, 2049Sunday \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nThe History of Shavuot?\nShavuot is first mentioned in the Torah as one of the Shalosh Regalim (Three Pilgrimage Festivals)\, alongside Passover and Sukkot. \nIn biblical times\, it marked the wheat harvest and the bringing of the first fruits (Bikkurim) to the Temple in Jerusalem. Farmers decorated baskets with produce and presented them with great ceremony\, accompanied by music and community celebrations. \nPilgrims traveled to Jerusalem to offer the Bikkurim in the Temple. Shavuot had a dual role agricultural festival and spiritual festival. \nAfter the destruction of the Second Temple (70 CE)\, agricultural offerings were no longer possible. \nWith the rise of the Zionist movement and the founding of the State of Israel in 1948\, Shavuot regained its agricultural character.

According to Buddhist tradition\, he was born on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month\, which became the basis for commemorating Buddha's Birthday across Buddhist cultures. \nAs Buddhism spread from India to China\, Korea\, Japan\, and Southeast Asia (from the 1st century CE onward)\, the celebration of Buddha's birth became part of local religious calendars. \nEach culture adapted the traditions\, but most kept the 4th lunar month\, 8th day as the sacred date. \nBuddhism entered Korea through China during the Three Kingdoms Period (Goguryeo\, Baekje\, and Silla) in the 4th century CE. \nSilla Dynasty (7th–9th century): Buddha's Birthday became a state-recognized festival\, with lantern-lighting ceremonies symbolizing enlightenment. \nGoryeo Dynasty (918–1392): Buddhism flourished\, and Buddha's Birthday was celebrated with large-scale temple ceremonies and public lantern festivals. \nJoseon Dynasty (1392–1897): Under Confucian rule\, Buddhism was suppressed\, but common people and monks continued to celebrate Buddha's Birthday\, keeping traditions alive. \nModern Era: With the revival of Buddhism in the 20th century\, Buddha's Birthday regained official recognition. In South Korea today\, it is a public holiday\, celebrated nationwide.
