These movements initiated an armed liberation war in the 1960s\, known as the Second Chimurenga\, against the Rhodesian government led by Ian Smith\, who had declared unilateral independence from Britain in 1965\, maintaining white-minority rule. \nAfter years of violent conflict and international pressure\, peace talks culminated in the Lancaster House Agreement in December 1979. \nThe agreement called for democratic elections under British supervision and the establishment of majority rule. \nOn April 18\, 1980\, Zimbabwe became an independent republic. Robert Mugabe\, leader of ZANU-PF\, became the country's first Prime Minister.
