The islands remained isolated and loyal to Vichy France for over 17 months. This meant scarce supplies\, and no connection to the Free French forces fighting against Axis powers. \nOn May 27\, 1942\, a Free French naval vessel named Chevreuil arrived in Wallis. The local administration peacefully shifted allegiance from Vichy France to Free France\, marking the islands' entry into the Allied side of the war. \nOn May 28\, 1942\, American forces arrived\, setting up a military base on the island of Wallis to support Pacific operations against Japan. The American military presence transformed the islands' infrastructure and economy. \nAfter the war\, France declared May 8 as Victory Day\, marking the surrender of Germany and the official end of World War II in Europe. \nAs a French territory\, Wallis and Futuna adopted the holiday\, and it remains a public holiday on the islands to this day. \nThe day serves as an opportunity to remember the sacrifices made during the war\, especially the local transition from Vichy rule and the contributions of Free French and Allied forces.

Although the uprising was suppressed\, it became a powerful symbol of Slovak resistance and national pride. \nIn the spring of 1945\, advancing Soviet and Romanian troops\, together with Slovak partisans\, liberated Slovak territory from Nazi control. \nOn May 8\, 1945\, Nazi Germany officially surrendered to the Allies\, ending World War II in Europe. For Slovakia\, this day marked freedom from fascist occupation and the collapse of the collaborationist regime. \nAfter the war\, May 8 was commemorated as Victory Day\, honoring the Allied victory and the sacrifices made during the war. \nDuring the socialist period of Czechoslovakia (1948–1989)\, the holiday was emphasized as a celebration of liberation by the Soviet Red Army\, with large parades and state ceremonies. \nAfter the Velvet Revolution (1989) and the independence of Slovakia (1993)\, the holiday was maintained but given broader meaning: honoring not only Soviet soldiers but also Slovak partisans\, Allied forces\, and all who resisted fascism. \nToday\, May 8 is celebrated in Slovakia as Victory over Fascism Day (Deň víťazstva nad fašizmom)\, a public holiday dedicated to remembering the end of WWII\, the defeat of Nazism\, and the sacrifices of Slovak resistance fighters.

The announcement of victory was greeted with jubilation in France\, which had endured Nazi occupation from 1940 to 1944. Almost immediately\, May 8 was celebrated as a day of victory and liberation. \nIn 1946\, the French government officially declared May 8 a public holiday to commemorate the victory and honor those who sacrificed during the war. In the years following\, different governments debated how to commemorate the date. Some felt it was too focused on war and division\, preferring to highlight broader reconciliation. \nPresident Charles de Gaulle modified the status of May 8. In 1959\, it was downgraded from a fixed public holiday to a day of commemoration\, with ceremonies but no statutory closure of workplaces. \nIn 1975\, President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing went further\, removing May 8 as a public holiday\, though it remained a symbolic day of remembrance. \nIn 1981\, newly elected President François Mitterrand restored May 8 as an official public holiday. This restoration reflected the importance of WWII memories in French society and the desire to formally honor veterans and victims. \nSince 1981\, May 8 has remained a national public holiday in France\, marked by solemn ceremonies\, most notably at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris\, where the President of France lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Over 300\,000 Tajiks were conscripted into the Red Army\, and nearly 92\,000 died\, and tens of thousands more were wounded or never returned. \nThough Tajikistan was far from the frontlines\, the republic contributed agricultural products\, raw materials\, and industrial goods to the Soviet war effort. \nVictory over Nazi Germany on May 9\, 1945\, was celebrated across the USSR\, including in Tajikistan\, as a day of national triumph and mourning. \nIn 1945\, May 9 was officially declared as Victory Day by the Soviet Union. Tajik SSR began commemorating the day with military parades\, ceremonies\, and honors for veterans. \nIn 1965\, Victory Day was declared a non-working public holiday across the USSR to mark the 20th anniversary of victory. \nAfter the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991\, Tajikistan retained May 9 as an official public holiday. The country continued to celebrate the heroism of WWII veterans\, many of whom were still alive in the 1990s. \nVictory Day also gained deeper meaning as Tajikistan emerged from its own civil war (1992–1997)\, reinforcing themes of peace and resilience.

The German occupation began on July 1\, 1940\, after the British government decided the islands were indefensible and evacuated most military forces. \nFor nearly five years\, islanders lived under strict German rule\, facing curfews\, food shortages\, forced labor\, censorship\, and deportations. The occupation deeply affected everyday life\, though many islanders maintained quiet resistance and hope for eventual liberation. \nOn May 8\, 1945\, Germany officially surrendered\, marking Victory in Europe (VE) Day. The next morning\, May 9\, British liberation forces arrived in St. Helier Harbour\, Jersey's capital. The Union Flag was raised again over the island\, symbolizing the end of occupation and the return of freedom. The same day\, Guernsey was also liberated; Alderney and Sark followed shortly after. \nMay 9 was declared Liberation Day\, becoming Jersey's national day of celebration and remembrance. It replaced the traditional May Day festivities as the island's most significant public holiday. \nLiberation Day honors both the joy of freedom and the endurance of those who lived through the occupation—including islanders who were deported\, imprisoned\, or separated from loved ones.

In his declaration\, Schuman proposed uniting Europe's coal and steel industries under a single authority to prevent future wars—an idea that became the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951. This initiative laid the foundation for the modern European Union\, promoting peace\, stability\, and economic cooperation after the devastation of World War II. \nLuxembourg was one of the six founding members of the ECSC (along with France\, Germany\, Italy\, Belgium\, and the Netherlands). Its strategic location and strong support for European integration made it a key player in the early development of the European project. \nAlthough Europe Day was recognized across the EU as a day of European unity since 1985\, it wasn't a public holiday in most countries. \nIn 2019\, Luxembourg became the first EU member state to officially designate May 9 as a public holiday. \nThe move reflected the country's deep commitment to European integration and honored Robert Schuman's legacy as a founding father of the EU. For Luxembourg\, Europe Day is more than a celebration\, it's a reminder of the nation's historic contribution to European unity.

The war became one of the deadliest and most decisive conflicts in human history\, claiming the lives of over 27 million Soviet citizens\, both military and civilian. \nDespite the enormous loss and devastation\, the Soviet Union played a crucial role in defeating Nazi Germany\, with landmark battles such as Stalingrad (1942–1943) and Kursk (1943) turning the tide in favor of the Allies. The final Soviet offensive ended with the capture of Berlin in May 1945. \nOn May 8\, 1945\, Germany signed an act of unconditional surrender in Reims\, France\, marking the end of the war in Europe. However\, because of time zone differences\, the surrender took effect in Moscow after midnight\, on May 9. Thus\, the Soviet Union declared May 9\, 1945\, as Victory Day. The next day\, Joseph Stalin announced the victory to the Soviet people\, and massive celebrations erupted across Moscow and other cities. \nIn 1946\, May 9 became an official holiday\, though it was not yet a public day off. During the late 1940s and 1950s\, official celebrations were subdued. Veterans\, however\, continued to observe the day privately\, visiting war memorials and honoring fallen comrades. \nIn 1965\, on the 20th anniversary of victory\, Leonid Brezhnev restored Victory Day as a major state holiday and declared it a non-working day across the USSR. In the 1970s and 1980s\, Victory Day became one of the most significant Soviet holidays. \nThe 1985\, 40th anniversary saw massive celebrations and recognition of war veterans as heroes of the nation. \nFollowing the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991\, newly independent republics adopted their own forms of remembrance\, but Russia retained May 9 as its principal Victory Day holiday. In modern Russia\, the day serves both as a commemoration of sacrifice and a display of national strength and continuity.

The day honors the extraordinary sacrifice\, courage\, and endurance of the Belarusian people\, who suffered more than almost any other nation during the war. \nWhen Nazi forces invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941\, Belarus—then the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR)—became one of the first targets. Within weeks\, most of the country was occupied\, and it endured some of the war's most brutal atrocities. Entire villages were burned\, and countless civilians were executed. An estimated 2.2 to 2.5 million Belarusians\, about one-quarter of the population\, died during the conflict. \nDespite this devastation\, Belarus became a center of partisan resistance. Tens of thousands of Belarusian men and women joined underground movements that sabotaged enemy operations and aided the Soviet Army. Their courage helped weaken Nazi control and contributed to the eventual liberation of the country in July 1944 during Operation Bagration\, one of the war's largest and most decisive offensives. \nFollowing the end of World War II in Europe on May 9\, 1945\, the Soviet Union declared the day Victory Day\, commemorating the triumph over fascism and honoring all who had fought and fallen. In Belarus\, the day quickly became a symbol not only of victory but also of collective endurance and national rebirth. \nAfter gaining independence in 1991\, Belarus retained Victory Day as a national holiday\, continuing many of the traditions established during Soviet times. The day is marked by military parades in Minsk\, wreath-laying ceremonies at war memorials\, veterans' gatherings\, and fireworks displays. \nToday\, Victory Day remains a deeply personal and national occasion—a time for honoring veterans\, remembering the fallen\, and celebrating peace. It reminds Belarusians of their extraordinary resilience during one of the darkest chapters in human history and of their lasting commitment to preserving the memory of those who gave their lives for freedom.

Christian churches\, especially in the Pacific\, were early promoters of the celebration\, tying it to religious services and family values. \nSamoa\, with its strong Christian foundation and emphasis on family and respect for parents\, embraced Mother's Day early in the 20th century through church influence. \nBy the mid-1900s\, it had become a well-established observance in Samoan communities\, marked with special church services\, family gatherings and feasting. \nRecognizing the importance of mothers in both family life and Samoan society\, the Government of Samoa declared Mother's Day a public holiday\, making it unique among Pacific nations. \nMother's Day is one of Samoa's most beloved holidays\, blending Christian devotion\, Samoan cultural traditions and modern gifting customs. It symbolizes the central role of women and mothers in Samoan social life\, and the extra public holiday highlights how deeply valued motherhood is in the nation.

It was introduced to Thailand during the Sukhothai period and formalized in the Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin eras. \nThe ceremony consists of two parts Phuetcha Mongkhon Ceremony (Buddhist) and Raek Na Khwan Ceremony (Brahmin/Hindu). \n– Phuetcha Mongkhon Ceremony (Buddhist) was held in the Grand Palace\, where monks bless rice seeds to be used during the ploughing rite. \n– Raek Na Khwan Ceremony (Brahmin/Hindu) was held at Sanam Luang\, and it features symbolic ploughing by royal representatives and sacred oxen. \nThe ceremony was discontinued in the 1920s\, and it was revived in 1960 by King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) to reestablish the monarchy-agriculture bond. Since then\, it has been overseen by the King or Crown Prince\, conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture\, and televised nationwide. \nRitual Details: \nThe Lord of the Ceremony (a high-ranking official) performs a ceremonial ploughing of the field using a golden plough pulled by sacred white oxen. \nThe oxen are offered trays of food: rice\, corn\, beans\, grass\, water and alcohol. The choice of food they eat is believed to predict the coming season's agricultural fortune. \nBlessed rice seeds are then sown by court officials as a symbol of abundance.

This mutiny became the seed of the SPLA\, which formally emerged as the military wing of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). \nThe SPLA's mission was not only to resist Khartoum but also to fight for greater equality\, self-determination and autonomy for Southern Sudanese people. \nOver the next two decades\, the SPLA became the dominant rebel force in the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005). The war was one of the longest and deadliest in Africa\, costing over 2 million lives and displacing millions more. \nIn the 1990s and 2000s\, the SPLA remained the central military organization representing Southern Sudanese aspirations despite internal divisions. \nIn 2005\, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed between SPLM/A and the Sudanese government. This agreement granted South Sudan regional autonomy and the right to hold an independence referendum. \nIn 2011\, South Sudan voted overwhelmingly for independence. On July 9\, 2011\, the Republic of South Sudan was born\, and the SPLA became its national army. \nSPLA Day is both a patriotic holiday and a memorial day\, acknowledging the suffering of civilians as well as the role of soldiers in achieving independence\, and it honors the sacrifice and resilience of those who fought in the struggle.

May 17\, the publication date of Rosalía's book\, was chosen as the holiday. \nThe day initially focused solely on honoring Rosalía de Castro\, widely regarded as the most iconic Galician poet and a central figure in reviving Galician language and identity. \nDuring the late Franco dictatorship (1939–1975)\, the public use of Galician was restricted\, but the celebration of Galician Literature Day persisted\, becoming a subtle act of cultural resistance. With Spain's transition to democracy and the Statute of Autonomy of Galicia (1981)\, the day gained even greater recognition as a public holiday. \nToday\, May 17 is a public holiday in Galicia\, fully dedicated to its language and literature. \nSchools\, cultural organizations and institutions across Galicia organize activities to promote Galician writers\, books and the use of the Galician language (galego) in everyday life.

This constitution defined the structure of government\, citizens' rights and freedoms\, and the principles of neutrality and sovereignty. \nThe 1992 Constitution marked Turkmenistan's official transition from Soviet rule to an independent republic\, affirming the country's political and legal identity. \nSince then\, May 18 has been observed as Constitution Day\, celebrating statehood and the rule of law. \nFlag Day: \nTurkmenistan adopted its national flag on February 19\, 1992\, soon after independence. For several years\, February 19 was celebrated as National Flag Day. \nIn 2018\, the Turkmen government decided to combine Constitution Day (May 18) and Flag Day (February 19) into a single national holiday celebrated on May 18.

On June 26\, 1960\, it gained independence as the State of Somaliland and was recognized by several countries\, including the UK. Just five days later\, on July 1\, 1960\, it voluntarily united with the former Italian Somaliland to form the Somali Republic. \nThe union soon became troubled: political imbalances\, marginalization of Somalilanders\, and authoritarian rule strained relations. \nDuring the 1980s\, under President Siad Barre\, the Somali government brutally suppressed opposition in the north\, including mass killings and destruction of cities like Hargeisa. These events fueled Somalilanders' determination to break away from Somalia. \nFollowing the collapse of Somalia's central government in 1991\, the Somali National Movement (SNM)\, along with clan elders and local leaders\, convened in Burao. \nOn May 18\, 1991\, they declared Somaliland independent\, reviving the sovereignty first achieved in June 1960. Hargeisa was established as the capital. \nMay 18 became Somaliland Sovereignty Day\, the most important national holiday in the region. It marks Somaliland's de facto independence\, though it remains unrecognized internationally. \nSince then\, Somaliland has developed its own government\, constitution\, elections\, and institutions\, often praised as more stable than the rest of Somalia.

SUMMARY:Shavuot (Israel)
DESCRIPTION:In Israel\, Shavuot is a one-day festival with dual meaning: it celebrates the giving of the Torah at Sinai and the harvest of the first fruits. It is observed with Torah study\, seating dairy foods\, and agricultural festivals\, making it both a deeply spiritual and earthly celebration. \nWhen is Shavuot?\nShavuot in Israel is on the 6th of Sivan in the Hebrew calendar (usually late May or early June). \nThe following is the list of Shavuot from 2020 to 2049. \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n HolidayDateWeekday\n\n\n\n \n ShavuotMay 29\, 2020Friday \n \n ShavuotMay 17\, 2021Monday \n \n ShavuotJun 05\, 2022Sunday \n \n ShavuotMay 26\, 2023Friday \n \n ShavuotJun 12\, 2024Wednesday \n \n ShavuotJun 02\, 2025Monday \n \n ShavuotMay 22\, 2026Friday \n \n ShavuotJun 11\, 2027Friday \n \n ShavuotMay 31\, 2028Wednesday \n \n ShavuotMay 20\, 2029Sunday \n \n ShavuotJun 07\, 2030Friday \n \n ShavuotMay 28\, 2031Wednesday \n \n ShavuotMay 16\, 2032Sunday \n \n ShavuotJun 03\, 2033Friday \n \n ShavuotMay 24\, 2034Wednesday \n \n ShavuotJun 13\, 2035Wednesday \n \n ShavuotJun 01\, 2036Sunday \n \n ShavuotMay 20\, 2037Wednesday \n \n ShavuotJun 09\, 2038Wednesday \n \n ShavuotMay 29\, 2039Sunday \n \n ShavuotMay 18\, 2040Friday \n \n ShavuotJun 05\, 2041Wednesday \n \n ShavuotMay 25\, 2042Sunday \n \n ShavuotJun 14\, 2043Sunday \n \n ShavuotJun 01\, 2044Wednesday \n \n ShavuotMay 22\, 2045Monday \n \n ShavuotJun 10\, 2046Sunday \n \n ShavuotMay 31\, 2047Friday \n \n ShavuotMay 18\, 2048Monday \n \n ShavuotJun 06\, 2049Sunday \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nThe History of Shavuot?\nShavuot is first mentioned in the Torah as one of the Shalosh Regalim (Three Pilgrimage Festivals)\, alongside Passover and Sukkot. \nIn biblical times\, it marked the wheat harvest and the bringing of the first fruits (Bikkurim) to the Temple in Jerusalem. Farmers decorated baskets with produce and presented them with great ceremony\, accompanied by music and community celebrations. \nPilgrims traveled to Jerusalem to offer the Bikkurim in the Temple. Shavuot had a dual role agricultural festival and spiritual festival. \nAfter the destruction of the Second Temple (70 CE)\, agricultural offerings were no longer possible. \nWith the rise of the Zionist movement and the founding of the State of Israel in 1948\, Shavuot regained its agricultural character.

According to Buddhist tradition\, he was born on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month\, which became the basis for commemorating Buddha's Birthday across Buddhist cultures. \nAs Buddhism spread from India to China\, Korea\, Japan\, and Southeast Asia (from the 1st century CE onward)\, the celebration of Buddha's birth became part of local religious calendars. \nEach culture adapted the traditions\, but most kept the 4th lunar month\, 8th day as the sacred date. \nBuddhism entered Korea through China during the Three Kingdoms Period (Goguryeo\, Baekje\, and Silla) in the 4th century CE. \nSilla Dynasty (7th–9th century): Buddha's Birthday became a state-recognized festival\, with lantern-lighting ceremonies symbolizing enlightenment. \nGoryeo Dynasty (918–1392): Buddhism flourished\, and Buddha's Birthday was celebrated with large-scale temple ceremonies and public lantern festivals. \nJoseon Dynasty (1392–1897): Under Confucian rule\, Buddhism was suppressed\, but common people and monks continued to celebrate Buddha's Birthday\, keeping traditions alive. \nModern Era: With the revival of Buddhism in the 20th century\, Buddha's Birthday regained official recognition. In South Korea today\, it is a public holiday\, celebrated nationwide.

Siddhartha was born around 563 BCE in Lumbini (present-day Nepal)\, a prince who renounced his royal life in search of spiritual truth. \nHis teachings on compassion\, mindfulness\, and the path to enlightenment became the foundation of Buddhism\, one of the world's major religions. Traditionally\, Buddhists believe that Buddha's birth\, enlightenment\, and passing into nirvana all occurred on the same day — the eighth day of the fourth lunar month\, which is when Buddha's Birthday is celebrated in Hong Kong and other parts of East Asia. \nThe commemoration of Buddha's birth began in India and spread across China\, Korea\, Japan\, and Southeast Asia over centuries. Each culture developed its own customs. \nIn China\, the celebration dates back to the Eastern Han dynasty (25–220 CE)\, when Buddhist temples were established and followers began to honor the Buddha's birth with offerings and rituals. This tradition traveled to Hong Kong through centuries of Chinese migration and cultural exchange\, blending seamlessly with local practices. \nBuddhism was introduced to Hong Kong during the 19th century\, alongside waves of Chinese settlers from Guangdong province. By the late 1800s and early 1900s\, Hong Kong had established several important Buddhist temples\, which would later become one of the most prominent sites for Buddha's Birthday celebrations. Over time\, Buddhism became one of the major religions in Hong Kong\, practiced alongside Taoism\, Confucianism\, and Christianity. \nBefore the mid-1990s\, Buddha's Birthday was widely celebrated by the Buddhist community but was not yet a public holiday in colonial Hong Kong. In 1997\, the same year Hong Kong was handed over from Britain to China\, the Hong Kong SAR Government officially recognized Buddha's Birthday as a public holiday\, replacing the Queen's Birthday holiday. This change reflected Hong Kong's cultural and religious identity\, acknowledging Buddhism's deep historical roots in Chinese society and its influence in the region. \nToday\, Buddha's Birthday is celebrated by both devout Buddhists and the general public as a day of reflection\, compassion\, and community. The most iconic ritual is the Bathing of the Buddha Ceremony\, symbolizing inner purification and the washing away of ignorance and suffering. Many people also participate in volunteer activities or release captive animals (such as fish or birds) as a gesture of compassion\, although animal release is increasingly replaced by eco-friendly practices.

It commemorates the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama\, who later became Buddha Shakyamuni\, the Enlightened One\, founder of Buddhism. \nThe holiday's origins date back over 2\,500 years to ancient India. According to Buddhist tradition\, Siddhartha Gautama was born around 563 BCE in Lumbini (in present-day Nepal). His birth was accompanied by miraculous signs—lotus flowers blooming beneath his feet and heavenly beings celebrating his arrival. The festival spread across Asia as Buddhism expanded\, taking root in China during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE)\, where it became a day of devotion and moral reflection. \nIn Macau\, where Chinese and Buddhist cultural traditions are deeply interwoven\, the festival has long been observed with both solemnity and festivity. Temples such as Pou Tai Un\, Lin Fung\, and Kun Iam Temple host elaborate ceremonies\, including the "Bathing of the Buddha" ritual. Devotees pour fragrant water over statues of the infant Buddha\, symbolizing inner purification and the washing away of negative karma. \nBuddha's Birthday in Macau is also marked by offerings of flowers\, incense and vegetarian meals\, alongside community service and prayers for peace and well-being. The festival reflects Macau's spiritual diversity and its enduring respect for compassion\, mindfulness and harmony\, values central to Buddhist philosophy.

Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I played a leading role in hosting and guiding the conference. \nFollowing the OAU's formation\, May 25 was celebrated across Africa as "African Liberation Day"\, especially in countries that had recently gained independence or were still fighting for it. \nIn 2002\, the OAU was transformed into the African Union (AU) to better address new political and social challenges facing the continent in the 21st century. \nDespite the transition\, May 25th continues to be celebrated as "Africa Day"\, serving as a reminder of Africa's journey from colonial rule to independence and self-determination.

Whit Monday was a long-standing Christian holiday observed for centuries across the British Isles. \nIn the 1960s\, the UK sought to modernize its holiday system by fixing dates to provide predictable long weekends rather than relying on movable feasts. \nIn 1967\, the UK officially replaced Whit Monday with the Spring Bank Holiday\, celebrated on the last Monday in May. The Isle of Man\, though self-governing\, mirrored this change to keep its bank holiday calendar broadly aligned with the UK. \nThe Spring Bank Holiday became an established public holiday on the island in the late 1960s/early 1970s. It did not carry specific Manx traditions like Tynwald Day or the TT Bank Holiday\, but it quickly became an important seasonal break. \nToday\, the Spring Bank Holiday continues to serve as a modern holiday of convenience rather than a traditional festival\, offering a pause at the start of summer.

The Act established official holidays for banks and businesses in the United Kingdom\, giving workers regular days off throughout the year. \nOriginally\, the late May holiday was tied to Whit Monday\, the day after Pentecost\, a Christian festival commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit. Since Pentecost's date varies with the Easter calendar\, Whit Monday did not fall on a fixed date. \nTo simplify scheduling\, the UK government moved the observance from Whit Monday to a fixed date\, the last Monday in May\, under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act of 1971. This provided consistency for schools\, businesses\, and workers. \nAs a Crown Dependency\, Jersey generally follows the United Kingdom's system of public holidays\, so the Spring Bank Holiday was adopted on the island as well. \nIn Jersey\, the Spring Bank Holiday has become a time to celebrate the changing of the seasons and the approach of summer. The day is often used for family outings\, picnics\, and coastal walks\, as well as local festivals and community events. \nWith its mild late-May weather\, it marks the start of the summer tourism season\, when visitors begin arriving to enjoy the island's beaches and scenery.

The Act established official holidays for banks and businesses\, giving workers fixed days of rest each year. \nInitially\, the late May holiday was tied to Whit Monday\, the day after Pentecost\, a Christian feast celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit. Because Whit Monday was a movable feast\, its date changed each year\, depending on the timing of Easter. \nTo simplify the holiday calendar\, the UK passed the Banking and Financial Dealings Act of 1971\, moving the observance from Whit Monday to the last Monday in May. This change provided a consistent\, predictable date and created a reliable long weekend at the end of spring. The holiday also evolved from a religious observance to a secular celebration of rest and leisure\, reflecting modern working life. \nAs a British Overseas Territory\, Gibraltar traditionally follows the UK's system of bank and public holidays\, adapting them to its local calendar and culture. The Spring Bank Holiday was formally introduced into Gibraltar's list of public holidays in the 1970s\, around the same time as the UK reform. \nIn Gibraltar\, the Spring Bank Holiday is a non-religious\, family-oriented day. Schools\, government offices and most businesses close\, giving the whole community a chance to rest. \nToday\, the Spring Bank Holiday in Gibraltar symbolizes rest\, renewal\, and balance\, a pause before the busy summer months.

Enslaved people worked mainly on sugar\, coffee\, and cotton plantations\, under harsh and inhumane conditions. \nResistance was constant\, and enslaved men and women resisted through revolts\, escapes and the preservation of African cultural traditions. \nThe first French abolition of slavery was declared during the French Revolution in 1794\, but it was later reinstated by Napoleon in 1802\, returning thousands of people to bondage. \nThroughout the early 19th century\, pressure grew from abolitionist movements in Europe and resistance in the colonies themselves. In 1848\, uprisings and growing pressure across the Caribbean made slavery increasingly untenable. \nOn April 27\, 1848\, the French Second Republic issued a decree permanently abolishing slavery in all French colonies. The decree took effect in Guadeloupe\, Martinique\, Guyane\, Réunion\, and the French part of Saint Martin. \nIn Saint Martin\, the news was enacted on May 28\, 1848\, when enslaved men\, women\, and children were formally freed. \nTo honor this historic event\, May 28 is commemorated as Abolition Day in Saint Martin. It is a day to remember the suffering endured under slavery\, while also celebrating the triumph of freedom and the resilience of Afro-Caribbean culture.

Over time\, as Bermudians developed a stronger sense of local identity\, as well as pride in their African\, Caribbean and Portuguese heritage\, the celebration shifted away from colonial symbolism. \nIn 1979\, the holiday was officially renamed Bermuda Day\, marking a key moment in the island's cultural development. It became a day to honor Bermudian traditions\, achievements\, and unity. That same year\, the first Bermuda Day Parade was held in Hamilton\, featuring local dance troupes\, Gombey performers\, floats\, and marching bands—a tradition that remains central to the holiday. \nBermuda Day is also tied to the island's connection to the sea and outdoor life. Historically\, many Bermudians believed Bermuda Day marked the earliest acceptable date to take the first ocean swim of the year\, kicking off boating season and summer festivities. This playful tradition still holds cultural value\, even as warmer-weather swims have become more common. \nIn 2018\, the holiday was moved from May 24 to the last Friday in May\, allowing for consistent long-weekend celebrations. \nToday\, Bermuda Day blends heritage\, pageantry and community pride. It represents the island's cultural journey—from colonial observance to a vibrant expression of Bermudian identity\, celebrated with parades\, sporting events\, picnics and the joyful energy of summer's arrival.

The British colonial authorities turned to India for a new labor source under a system called indentureship. \nOn May 30\, 1845\, the ship Fatel Razack arrived in Trinidad\, carrying 225 Indian indentured laborers from Calcutta (now Kolkata). This was the first official arrival of Indians to Trinidad\, marking the start of a major demographic and cultural shift. \nBetween 1845 and 1917\, over 147\,000 Indians were brought to Trinidad to work on plantations under five-year contracts. Many chose to stay after their contracts\, forming what is now the Indo-Trinidadian community. \nIn 1995\, under Prime Minister Patrick Manning\, the government declared May 30 as Indian Arrival Day\, a national public holiday to mark the 150th anniversary of the Fatel Razack's landing.

The Canary Islands\, due to their unique geography and identity\, were included in this process. \nIn August 1982\, Spain's central government granted the Canary Islands autonomous community status\, providing them with self-governing powers within the Spanish state. \nThe first session of the Parliament of the Canary Islands was held on May 30\, 1983\, officially marking the beginning of modern Canarian self-government. \nTo commemorate this milestone\, May 30 was officially designated as the Day of the Canary Islands. \nIt serves as both a political anniversary of autonomy and a cultural celebration of the islands' traditions\, heritage\, and identity. Today\, it is recognized as a public holiday across the archipelago.

Each region with a strong identity could create its own Statute of Autonomy\, which laid the basis for self-government. \nCastilla–La Mancha\, a vast central region of Spain formed by the provinces of Albacete\, Ciudad Real\, Cuenca\, Guadalajara\, and Toledo\, began this process soon after the Constitution. \nOn August 10\, 1982\, the Statute of Autonomy of Castilla–La Mancha was approved by the Spanish Cortes. \nThis statute formally established Castilla–La Mancha as an autonomous community\, granting it political institutions such as a Regional Assembly\, Presidency\, and Government Council. \nIt also recognized the region's cultural and historical identity\, deeply tied to the heritage of La Mancha and Don Quixote. \nThe first Regional Parliament of Castilla–La Mancha and its institutions were inaugurated on May 31\, 1983\, in Toledo\, the historic capital. \nTo commemorate this foundational moment of modern self-government\, May 31 was declared the Day of Castilla–La Mancha.

According to tradition\, three major events in the life of Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) all took place on the full moon of Vesak: \n– His birth in Lumbini (modern-day Nepal). \n– His enlightenment (attaining Buddhahood) under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya\, India. \n– His Parinirvana (final passing away) at Kushinagar\, India. \nEarly Buddhist communities began commemorating these events more than 2\,000 years ago\, with rituals and gatherings on the Vesak full moon. As Buddhism spread from India to Sri Lanka\, China\, Southeast Asia\, and beyond\, Vesak became one of the most important festivals in Buddhist cultures. \nWith the arrival of Chinese and Sri Lankan Buddhists\, Vesak celebrations were brought to Singapore during the colonial era. \nIn 1955\, Vesak Day was officially gazetted as a public holiday in Singapore\, after petitions from Buddhist organizations. This recognition highlighted the significance of Buddhism in Singapore's multicultural society. \nIn Singapore\, Vesak Day also carries a community and multicultural aspect\, with people of other faiths often participating in charity drives and cultural programs.

The term Vesak comes from the ancient Pali word "Vesākha"\, which refers to the second month of the Indian lunar calendar. \nBuddhism reached the Indonesian archipelago between the 1st and 5th centuries CE\, primarily through trade routes from India. It flourished alongside Hinduism\, shaping Indonesia's cultural and spiritual heritage for over a millennium. By the 7th–9th centuries\, under the Sriwijaya Empire (Sumatra) and the Sailendra Dynasty (Central Java)\, Buddhism reached its golden age in Indonesia. \nDuring the Dutch colonial era (17th–20th centuries)\, Buddhism declined as Islam became the dominant religion and colonial authorities discouraged local traditions. However\, small Buddhist communities persisted\, especially among ethnic Chinese and Javanese Buddhists. \nThe revival of Buddhism began in the early 20th century\, driven by Indonesian scholars and monks who sought to preserve and reintroduce Buddhist teachings. \nIn 1953\, after Indonesia gained independence\, the first modern Waisak celebration was held at Borobudur Temple\, uniting Buddhists from across the country. \nIn 1983\, the Indonesian government officially declared Waisak a national public holiday\, recognizing its importance to the country's Buddhist community. \nIn 1999\, the United Nations officially recognized Vesak as an international day of observance\, honoring the Buddha's teachings of peace and human dignity. \nToday\, Waisak in Indonesia attracts not only Buddhists but also tourists and spiritual seekers from around the world who come to experience the serenity of Borobudur and the breathtaking lantern ceremony.

Early observances were held on the actual birthday of the reigning monarch\, with ceremonies\, parades\, and official functions marking the occasion. \nBecause each monarch had a different birthday\, the holiday date changed over time\, which was inconvenient for planning public events. \nIn 1937\, during the reign of King George VI\, New Zealand adopted the practice of celebrating the monarch's "official birthday" on the first Monday in June. \nThis mirrored the United Kingdom\, which had already established a similar tradition\, ensuring a consistent annual public holiday regardless of the sovereign's real birth date. \nUnder Queen Elizabeth II (1952–2022)\, the holiday was known as Queen's Birthday and became one of New Zealand's most enduring public holidays. \nIt was marked by the release of the Queen's Birthday Honours List\, recognizing New Zealanders for achievements in public service\, arts\, sports\, and other fields. \nWith the accession of King Charles III in 2022\, the holiday was renamed King's Birthday. Today\, the King's Birthday (first Monday in June) remains a national public holiday in New Zealand.
