It is serving as a time to remember the dead not with sorrow\, but with joy and hope in Christ's victory over death. \nThe holiday's roots reach back to pagan times\, when Slavic peoples held spring festivals to honor their ancestors. Families would visit graves\, share food\, and celebrate the renewal of nature\, a reflection of the belief that the boundary between the living and the dead was thinnest in spring. When Christianity spread through the Slavic lands in the 10th century\, the Orthodox Church incorporated these ancestral customs into Christian practice\, transforming them into a commemoration of the departed in the light of the Resurrection. \nBy the 14th century\, Radonitsa had become an officially recognized church observance in many parts of Eastern Europe\, including Belarus\, Russia\, and Ukraine. The name itself derives from the Slavic word radost\, meaning "joy"\, symbolizing the faithful's rejoicing that the dead share in the promise of eternal life through Christ. \nTraditionally\, families attend a memorial service at church and then visit cemeteries\, where they clean graves\, decorate them with flowers\, light candles\, and share festive foods—especially dyed Easter eggs\, representing rebirth and resurrection. Food is sometimes left symbolically for the departed\, and family members greet each other with Easter greetings\, such as "Christ is Risen!" \nIn modern Belarus\, Radonitsa is both a religious and public holiday\, officially recognized since 1992. It remains a heartfelt day of remembrance\, family unity\, and faith\, honoring loved ones through both prayer and celebration\, as life and resurrection triumph over grief.

Its origins are closely tied to Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito) and Japan's postwar history. \nOriginally\, April 29 was celebrated as Emperor Shōwa's Birthday during his reign (1926–1989). After his death\, the day was renamed Greenery Day in 1989\, to honor the late emperor's deep love of nature\, particularly his interest in botany and marine biology\, without directly referencing his wartime legacy. The intent was to retain the holiday while shifting its focus toward environmental appreciation and peace. \nIn 2007\, Greenery Day was officially moved to May 4\, as part of the reorganization of Japan's Golden Week holidays. April 29 was renamed Shōwa Day\, allowing people to reflect on the turbulent yet transformative Shōwa era. \nToday\, Greenery Day encourages people to spend time outdoors\, plant trees\, and cherish Japan's natural beauty. It also symbolizes the nation's ongoing respect for environmental harmony and sustainable living\, aligning with Japan's cultural reverence for nature found in Shinto and Buddhist traditions.

The Ottomans\, under Jamal Pasha\, the military governor of Syria\, saw these nationalist activities as treason. \nOn May 6\, 1916\, Jamal Pasha ordered the public execution of dozens of Arab nationalists in Martyrs' Square in Damascus and Beirut. These included writers\, politicians\, and reformers who were accused of conspiring against Ottoman rule. The executions were meant to suppress nationalist sentiment but instead galvanized Arab support for independence. \nThe executions became a symbol of Arab martyrdom and resistance. \nAfter the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the end of the French Mandate\, Syria adopted May 6 as Martyrs' Day\, honoring the 1916 martyrs\, and all Syrians who have died in the struggle for freedom and national dignity. \nSince the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War\, the day has also been used to honor those killed during the conflict and promote narratives of resistance and unity.

The day honors the extraordinary sacrifice\, courage\, and endurance of the Belarusian people\, who suffered more than almost any other nation during the war. \nWhen Nazi forces invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941\, Belarus—then the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR)—became one of the first targets. Within weeks\, most of the country was occupied\, and it endured some of the war's most brutal atrocities. Entire villages were burned\, and countless civilians were executed. An estimated 2.2 to 2.5 million Belarusians\, about one-quarter of the population\, died during the conflict. \nDespite this devastation\, Belarus became a center of partisan resistance. Tens of thousands of Belarusian men and women joined underground movements that sabotaged enemy operations and aided the Soviet Army. Their courage helped weaken Nazi control and contributed to the eventual liberation of the country in July 1944 during Operation Bagration\, one of the war's largest and most decisive offensives. \nFollowing the end of World War II in Europe on May 9\, 1945\, the Soviet Union declared the day Victory Day\, commemorating the triumph over fascism and honoring all who had fought and fallen. In Belarus\, the day quickly became a symbol not only of victory but also of collective endurance and national rebirth. \nAfter gaining independence in 1991\, Belarus retained Victory Day as a national holiday\, continuing many of the traditions established during Soviet times. The day is marked by military parades in Minsk\, wreath-laying ceremonies at war memorials\, veterans' gatherings\, and fireworks displays. \nToday\, Victory Day remains a deeply personal and national occasion—a time for honoring veterans\, remembering the fallen\, and celebrating peace. It reminds Belarusians of their extraordinary resilience during one of the darkest chapters in human history and of their lasting commitment to preserving the memory of those who gave their lives for freedom.

At the time\, he had just been sworn in as the First Vice President of Sudan and the President of the Government of Southern Sudan\, following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) earlier that year. \nHis death came only three weeks after taking office\, shocking the region and sparking mass mourning across Southern Sudan. July 30 was declared Martyrs' Day soon after Garang's death. \nWhile the holiday specifically commemorates him\, it also serves as a broader remembrance of all soldiers\, leaders\, and civilians who died during the decades-long struggle for liberation. It acknowledges the sacrifices of millions who fought or suffered in the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005) and earlier conflicts. \nAfter South Sudan gained independence on July 9\, 2011\, Martyrs' Day became one of the most important national holidays. It reminds South Sudanese people of the price of freedom and the vision of John Garang\, who believed in a peaceful\, united and democratic country.

Her family came from northern Albania\, and maintained strong ties to Albanian culture\, language\, and Catholic faith. From a young age\, Anjezë felt a deep calling to serve humanity\, inspired by her mother's devotion to helping the poor and her community's strong spiritual traditions. \nAt age 18\, she joined the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland and soon moved to India\, where she took the name Teresa after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. In 1946\, she experienced what she called "the call within the call"\, leaving her convent to work among Kolkata's poorest citizens. \nShe founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950\, an order dedicated to caring for "the poorest of the poor". Over time\, her work expanded globally\, establishing orphanages\, hospices\, and centers for the sick and dying in over 130 countries. Her humility and selflessness earned worldwide recognition\, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. \nDuring Albania's communist era (1945–1990)\, religion was banned\, and Mother Teresa's name was largely suppressed. After the fall of communism\, she became a national symbol of faith\, compassion and pride for Albanians worldwide. \nHer visits to Albania in the early 1990s\, including meeting with then-President Ramiz Alia\, deeply moved the nation. Her legacy helped inspire a moral and spiritual renewal in post-communist Albania. \nMother Teresa Day was officially established as a national holiday in Albania to honor her canonization by the Catholic Church and her enduring humanitarian legacy. The date\, September 5\, marks the anniversary of her death in 1997\, the same day recognized globally by the United Nations as the International Day of Charity. \nMother Teresa Day celebrates more than her religious devotion\, it represents humanity and compassion beyond borders or faiths. She remains a national heroine and an international icon of kindness\, embodying Albania's enduring values of generosity and empathy.

Like many Commonwealth nations\, Bermuda observes this day in conjunction with Armistice Day\, marking the end of World War I on November 11\, 1918. \nWhen the armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany\, ending hostilities on the Western Front\, nations across the British Empire began observing Armistice Day to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. In Bermuda\, then a British colony\, the holiday quickly took root as islanders joined the wider Commonwealth in paying tribute to fallen soldiers. \nDuring World War I (1914–1918)\, over 500 Bermudians served in various branches of the British armed forces\, despite the island's small population. Bermudian units such as the Bermuda Volunteer Rifle Corps (BVRC) and the Bermuda Militia Artillery (BMA) played active roles overseas\, fighting in places like France\, Belgium and the Middle East. Their bravery earned distinction and respect\, though many never returned home. \nThe tradition of remembrance continued through World War II (1939–1945)\, during which more Bermudians enlisted and served across Europe\, Africa\, and the Atlantic. After the Second World War\, the commemoration evolved from Armistice Day into Remembrance Day\, expanding to honor all who served in later conflicts as well. \nRemembrance Day continues to serve as a day of reflection and gratitude\, honoring not only those who died but also all Bermudians who served in military or peacekeeping roles. It is both a public holiday and a solemn civic tradition\, marked by dignity\, unity\, and reverence. \nThe red poppy\, adopted from the famous World War I poem "In Flanders Fields"\, remains the central symbol of remembrance. Islanders wear it proudly to show respect for the sacrifices made in defense of peace and freedom. \nToday\, Remembrance Day in Bermuda links the island's small but proud contribution to global history with a timeless message of remembrance\, resilience and hope for peace.
