This marked the introduction of Marian devotion under this title in Ceuta\, a city located on the North African coast but long connected with Iberian Christian tradition. \nThe image of Our Lady of Africa\, a Gothic-style wooden statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus\, became the spiritual heart of this devotion. \nIn 1580\, when Portugal was united with Spain under Philip II\, devotion to the Virgin in Ceuta gained wider Spanish influence. \nBy the 17th century\, Our Lady of Africa was fully integrated into Spanish religious life and recognized as the Patroness of Ceuta. \nThe Shrine of Our Lady of Africa (Santuario de Nuestra Señora de África) was expanded and became a pilgrimage site. \nHer feast is celebrated on August 5\, with processions through the streets of Ceuta\, religious ceremonies and cultural festivities. She is especially venerated as a protector of sailors and soldiers\, given Ceuta's role as a fortress and port city.

Her family came from northern Albania\, and maintained strong ties to Albanian culture\, language\, and Catholic faith. From a young age\, Anjezë felt a deep calling to serve humanity\, inspired by her mother's devotion to helping the poor and her community's strong spiritual traditions. \nAt age 18\, she joined the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland and soon moved to India\, where she took the name Teresa after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. In 1946\, she experienced what she called "the call within the call"\, leaving her convent to work among Kolkata's poorest citizens. \nShe founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950\, an order dedicated to caring for "the poorest of the poor". Over time\, her work expanded globally\, establishing orphanages\, hospices\, and centers for the sick and dying in over 130 countries. Her humility and selflessness earned worldwide recognition\, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. \nDuring Albania's communist era (1945–1990)\, religion was banned\, and Mother Teresa's name was largely suppressed. After the fall of communism\, she became a national symbol of faith\, compassion and pride for Albanians worldwide. \nHer visits to Albania in the early 1990s\, including meeting with then-President Ramiz Alia\, deeply moved the nation. Her legacy helped inspire a moral and spiritual renewal in post-communist Albania. \nMother Teresa Day was officially established as a national holiday in Albania to honor her canonization by the Catholic Church and her enduring humanitarian legacy. The date\, September 5\, marks the anniversary of her death in 1997\, the same day recognized globally by the United Nations as the International Day of Charity. \nMother Teresa Day celebrates more than her religious devotion\, it represents humanity and compassion beyond borders or faiths. She remains a national heroine and an international icon of kindness\, embodying Albania's enduring values of generosity and empathy.
