Local fishermen were struggling to catch fish in the Paraíba River as they prepared for the visit of a regional governor\, Dom Pedro de Almeida e Portugal\, Count of Assumar. \nThree fishermen\, Domingos Garcia\, João Alves\, and Filipe Pedroso\, prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. Casting their nets\, they first pulled up a small clay statue of a headless figure from the river. When they cast their nets again\, they found the missing head. After retrieving and cleaning the statue\, they continued fishing\, and to their astonishment\, their nets filled with fish. \nThe fishermen took this as a miracle\, and word of the event spread quickly. The little dark-skinned clay statue\, later recognized as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception\, came to be affectionately called Nossa Senhora Aparecida\, meaning "Our Lady Who Appeared". \nThe statue was first kept in the home of Filipe Pedroso\, where neighbors gathered to pray. Reports of miracles and healings attributed to Our Lady of Aparecida multiplied\, and devotion to her spread across the region. In 1745\, a small chapel was built to house the statue\, and by 1834\, a larger church\, the Old Basilica\, was constructed to accommodate growing numbers of pilgrims. \nIn 1904\, Pope Pius X authorized the canonical coronation of Our Lady of Aparecida\, officially recognizing her as a sacred symbol of devotion. Later\, in 1930\, Pope Pius XI declared her the Patroness of Brazil\, cementing her status as a national spiritual figure. \nThe Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida\, built to replace the older church\, began construction in 1955 and was completed in 1980. At 15\, he joined the Augustinian Canons in Lisbon\, then later in Coimbra\, dedicating himself to study and prayer. \nInspired by the martyrdom of Franciscan friars in Morocco\, he joined the Franciscan Order\, taking the name Anthony. He hoped to preach in Morocco but fell ill and ended up in Italy\, where his brilliance was discovered. \nAnthony became one of the greatest preachers of the Middle Ages\, called the "Hammer of Heretics" for his ability to defend the faith against heresy. He taught in Bologna\, Montpellier\, and Toulouse\, becoming the first Franciscan to teach theology in the order. Known as the "Saint of Miracles"\, he was credited with healings\, multiplying food for the hungry\, and even speaking to fish when people ignored his sermons. \nHe died on June 13\, 1231\, in Padua\, Italy\, at only 35 years old. It is believed that it commemorated the day when Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Children of Israel were saved from Pharaoh by the parting of the Red Sea. \nWhen Prophet Muhammad arrived in Medina after the Hijrah (migration from Mecca)\, he found the Jewish community observing a fast on the 10th of Muharram. He fasted on this day and encouraged Muslims to fast as well. Later\, he recommended adding a day before or after (9th or 11th) to distinguish the Islamic practice from that of the Jews. \nOn Ashura in the year 61 AH (October 10\, 680 CE)\, Imam Hussain ibn Ali\, the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad\, was martyred in Karbala (modern-day Iraq). He and about 72 companions\, including family members\, were killed by the army of Yazid ibn Muawiya\, the Umayyad ruler. \nImam Hussain refused to give allegiance to Yazid\, whom he considered unjust and corrupt. He stood for truth and the moral integrity of Islam\, even at the cost of his life.
