For more than a decade\, the country operated under this system\, with limited political pluralism. \nBy the early 1990s\, global political changes (end of the Cold War\, democratization movements worldwide) influenced Seychelles. Growing internal pressure led to the government agreeing to reforms. \nIn 1992\, a Constitutional Commission was formed\, bringing together representatives from different political parties and groups to draft a new constitution. \nOn June 18\, 1993\, following a national referendum\, Seychelles officially adopted its new constitution\, marking the start of the Third Republic. \nThe constitution introduced: a multi-party political system\, guarantees of civil rights and freedoms\, clear separation of powers (executive\, legislative\, judicial)\, and democratic institutions that remain in place today. \nTo honor this democratic milestone\, June 18 was declared Constitution Day in Seychelles. It commemorates the return of multi-party democracy\, the protection of civil liberties\, and the empowerment of citizens in governance.

The aim was to recognize Indigenous peoples' rights\, cultures\, and contributions while raising awareness of issues like land rights\, discrimination\, and environmental protection. \nSuriname officially joined global observance of August 9 to highlight the role and struggles of its Indigenous peoples\, who are considered the first inhabitants of the land. \nThe day became both a cultural celebration and a political platform for Indigenous organizations to advocate for rights\, especially land ownership and recognition.
