Abdullah al-Sallal became the republic's first president. \nThe revolution sparked an 8-year civil war between Republicans\, backed by Egypt and Royalists\, supported by Saudi Arabia\, Jordan\, and some Western powers. \nThe war devastated the country but ended with victory for the Republicans\, and international recognition of the Yemen Arab Republic. \nThe 1962 Revolution ended monarchical rule and introduced republican governance based on modern ideals of equality\, education and secular state-building.

For nearly seven decades\, Turkmenistan was governed as one of the fifteen Soviet republics\, with limited political autonomy. \nIn the late 1980s and early 1990s\, the Soviet Union began to collapse\, with political reforms fueling independence movements across Soviet republics. \nFollowing the failed August 1991 coup in Moscow\, republics across the Soviet Union declared independence\, including Turkmenistan. \nOn October 27\, 1991\, the Supreme Soviet of the Turkmen SSR officially declared Turkmenistan's independence from the Soviet Union. \nThis historic day marked the birth of the sovereign state of Turkmenistan\, ending nearly 70 years of Soviet control. \nTurkmenistan held its first Independence Day celebration on October 27\, 1992\, marking the first anniversary of independence. \nOriginally\, Independence Day was celebrated every October 27. However\, in 2018\, the Turkmen government changed the holiday date to September 27 to better structure the national holiday calendar.
