Early observances of the holiday were strongly associated with Bonifacio and the revolutionaries of 1896. \nDuring the American colonial period\, there was a strong movement to honor Philippine heroes and instill nationalism. \nIn 1931\, the Philippine Legislature passed Act No. 3827\, officially declaring the last Sunday of August as National Heroes Day. The date was chosen to coincide with the Cry of Pugad Lawin\, symbolizing the start of the revolution and the collective struggle for freedom. \nOver time\, the holiday expanded beyond Bonifacio and the revolutionaries to honor all Filipino heroes. \nAfter the Philippines gained independence\, National Heroes Day continued to be observed annually. In 1952\, the celebration was moved to the last Monday of August to align with government reforms on national holidays. \nIt was further institutionalized under subsequent laws and presidential proclamations\, ensuring its recognition as a regular national holiday.
