Aquino was imprisoned for nearly 8 years on charges widely seen as politically motivated. \nIn 1980\, after suffering a heart attack in prison\, he was allowed to go to the United States for medical treatment and later lived in exile with his family. \nDespite warnings to stay away\, Ninoy decided to return to the Philippines in 1983\, believing it was his duty to fight for democracy. \nOn August 21\, 1983\, upon arrival at the Manila International Airport\, he was assassinated as he was escorted off the plane. His murder shocked the nation and became a catalyst for widespread protests against the Marcos regime. \nAquino's assassination galvanized Filipinos across all sectors of society. Massive protests and civil disobedience movements grew\, uniting the opposition. His death directly contributed to the People Power Revolution of 1986\, which toppled Marcos and brought Ninoy's widow\, Corazon "Cory" Aquino\, to the presidency—the first female president of the Philippines. \nIn 2004\, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed Republic Act No. 9256\, declaring August 21 of every year as Ninoy Aquino Day. \nThe law recognized Ninoy's assassination as the spark that ignited a renewed fight for freedom and democracy.

It was intentionally aligned with the birthday of the reigning monarch\, emphasizing the symbolic bond between the King and the country's younger generations. \nHistorically\, the Moroccan monarchy has viewed the youth as the driving force for national progress and stability. By connecting Youth Day to the King's birthday\, the celebration highlights the monarch's role as a leader and unifying figure for the nation's future. \nUnder King Hassan II (reigned 1961–1999)\, Youth Day was celebrated on July 9\, coinciding with his birthday. When King Mohammed VI ascended the throne in 1999\, the date was moved to August 21\, his own birthday. \nYouth Day emphasizes the importance of education\, innovation\, and civic participation among young Moroccans. It serves as a reminder that national development depends on the engagement and empowerment of younger generations. \nYouth Day often follows directly after Revolution Day (August 20)\, creating a two-day period celebrating national unity and generational renewal. Youth Day underscores Morocco's belief that the strength of the nation lies in its youth.
