His works expressed themes of love\, freedom\, human dignity\, and national identity\, becoming symbols of Slovenian cultural pride. \nHis poem "Zdravljica" (A Toast) later became the Slovenian national anthem\, with its famous line: "God's blessing on all nations". \nPrešeren died on February 8\, 1849. This date was later chosen to commemorate his legacy and to celebrate Slovenian culture as a whole. \nPrešeren's importance grew in the 19th and early 20th centuries\, as Slovenes under Austro-Hungarian rule sought stronger expressions of national identity. \nBy the early 20th century\, commemorations of Prešeren were already taking place. After World War II\, February 8 was officially declared a cultural holiday in Slovenia (in 1945). \nFollowing Slovenia's independence in 1991\, the day was reaffirmed as the country's official national cultural holiday.
