Over time\, it has become an important state holiday in Massachusetts and Maine. \nBy 1775\, tensions between the American colonies and Great Britain had escalated due to issues such as taxation without representation\, the Stamp Act\, and the Intolerable Acts. The British government's attempts to assert control over the colonies met with growing resistance\, culminating in the rise of militias and revolutionary groups like the Sons of Liberty. \nThe British Army aimed to seize colonial weapons stockpiled in Concord and arrest revolutionary leaders. At dawn on April 19\, 1775\, British troops encountered about 77 Minutemen on Lexington Green. The resulting skirmish left eight colonists dead. After moving to Concord\, the British faced a larger force of armed colonists at the Old North Bridge. British troops retreated under heavy fire\, marking the first American victory of the war. \nMassachusetts Governor Frederick T. Greenhalge proclaimed Patriot's Day a state holiday in 1894. The holiday replaced Fast Day\, a previous public observance rooted in religious traditions. Maine\, originally part of Massachusetts until 1820\, also adopted Patriot's Day as a state holiday. \nPatriot's Day was originally celebrated on April 19 but was changed to the third Monday in April in 1969 to create a long weekend. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nPatriot's Day celebrates the start of the American Revolutionary War with a variety of historical\, cultural\, and athletic events. \nCities and towns\, especially Lexington and Concord\, host parades featuring marching bands\, floats\, colonial reenactors\, and local organizations. In some communities\, wreath-laying and flag-raising ceremonies honor those who fought and died in the Battles of Lexington and Concord. \nHeld annually on Patriot's Day since 1897\, the Boston Marathon is one of the most prestigious marathons in the world. High school and college athletic events are often scheduled to coincide with the holiday. \nMany communities host festivals with food\, music\, and family-friendly activities\, and picnics and outdoor gatherings are common\, especially in parks and historical sites. \nSome local leaders and historians deliver speeches reflecting on the significance of the holiday and the ideals of freedom and independence. \nAmerican Revolutionary War (1775–1783)\nThe American Revolutionary War\, also known as the War of Independence\, was a conflict between the Thirteen American Colonies and Great Britain. The war resulted in the establishment of the United States of America as an independent nation and marked a turning point in global history\, inspiring other movements for independence and democracy. \nThe colonies objected to British taxes like the Stamp Act and Tea Act because they had no representation in the British Parliament. Many colonists wanted greater control over their governance and trade\, resisting British attempts to assert tighter control. \nThe conflict began with the Battles of Lexington and Concord in April 1775\, where colonial militias confronted British forces. This armed resistance escalated as the colonies united under the leadership of figures like George Washington and adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4\, 1776\, asserting their right to self-governance. \nKey battles\, such as the Battle of Saratoga (1777)\, proved crucial\, drawing France into the war as an ally to the Americans. The war's turning point came at the Battle of Yorktown (1781)\, where British General Cornwallis surrendered to American and French forces. The war officially ended with the Treaty of Paris (1783)\, in which Britain recognized U.S. independence and ceded significant territory. \nThe American Revolutionary War was not just a military victory but also a triumph of ideas. It inspired movements for freedom worldwide and laid the foundation for the United States as a beacon of democracy.

Under the new administration led by Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang (KMT) government\, tensions quickly escalated between the local Taiwanese population and mainland Chinese authorities due to corruption\, repression and cultural tensions. \nOn February 27\, 1947\, a confrontation between officials and a cigarette vendor in Taipei turned violent. The following day\, February 28\, large-scale protests and riots erupted across Taiwan. \nThe ROC government responded with military force\, leading to a brutal crackdown that resulted in the deaths of an estimated 10\,000 to 30\,000 civilians and the arrest of thousands more. This marked the beginning of a period of authoritarian rule known as the White Terror\, during which political dissent was harshly suppressed. \nFor decades\, the 228 Incident was a taboo topic in public discourse. In the 1990s\, during Taiwan's democratization\, calls for truth and reconciliation gained momentum. \nIn 1995\, then-President Lee Teng-hui-the first Taiwan-born president\, formally apologized for the government's role in the 228 Incident. The same year\, the February 28 Incident Memorial Foundation was established to support survivors and victims' families. \nIn 1997\, the Legislative Yuan (Taiwan's parliament) officially declared February 28 a national holiday "Peace Memorial Day" to honor the victims and promote healing and democracy.

The holiday originated in 1918\, during the Russian Civil War (1917–1922)\, a turbulent period following the October Revolution. \nThe Bolshevik government\, led by Vladimir Lenin\, established the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army on January 28\, 1918 (February 10 in the Gregorian calendar). A few weeks later\, on February 23\, 1918\, mass volunteer recruitment events were held across Russia to strengthen the Red Army against advancing German forces near St. Petersburg. Although early Soviet historians later exaggerated the military success of that day\, it became symbolically associated with the birth of the Red Army. \nIn 1919\, February 23 was officially declared "Red Army Day"\, commemorating the formation of the Soviet military. The holiday quickly became one of the most significant annual celebrations in the Soviet calendar\, honoring the soldiers and promoting loyalty to the Communist Party and the revolution. \nDuring World War II (1941–1945)\, February 23 gained deeper meaning as the Soviet Union fought for survival against Nazi Germany. It evolved from a day commemorating the Red Army's founding into one celebrating the courage\, sacrifice\, and heroism of all who defended the Soviet homeland. \nAfter the war\, the holiday was renamed "Soviet Army and Navy Day" in 1949\, expanding its scope to include all military branches\, and it became a major state holiday. Over time\, it also became informally known as "Men's Day"\, since nearly every Soviet family had members who had served in the military. Women often gave small gifts or greetings to male relatives and colleagues\, mirroring the way International Women's Day (March 8) honored women. \nAfter the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991\, the Russian Federation retained February 23 as a national observance. In 2002\, it was officially renamed "Defender of the Fatherland Day" and designated as a public holiday. \nThe holiday's meaning broadened from honoring soldiers alone to celebrating all who serve or have served\, including veterans\, reservists\, and those working in national defense. It also remains a day of appreciation for men in general\, continuing the tradition of being informally called Men's Day.

Luwum rose through the ranks of the Anglican Church and was appointed Archbishop of the Church of Uganda\, Rwanda\, Burundi\, and Boga-Zaire in 1974. \nAs a religious leader\, Luwum became a strong moral voice during a time of widespread political oppression under the dictatorship of Idi Amin. \nLuwum used his position to publicly criticize the Ugandan government for its human rights violations\, killings and corruption. He especially condemned the military's brutality and the enforced disappearances of civilians. \nIn February 1977\, he and other church leaders delivered a protest letter directly to President Amin. Soon after delivering the letter\, Luwum was arrested under false charges of treason. \nOn February 16\, 1977\, he was killed. The government claimed it was a car accident\, but it was later revealed he had been shot in the mouth at close range. \nHis murder shocked the world and drew strong condemnation from religious leaders and governments across the globe. Luwum's death symbolized the courage of faith leaders standing up for justice\, even at the cost of their lives. \nIn 1998\, he was recognized by the Church of England with a statue at Westminster Abbey in London\, as one of the 20th-century martyrs. \nIn 2015\, the Ugandan government officially declared February 16 a public holiday to honor Archbishop Luwum's sacrifice.

The holiday emerged as part of broader efforts in the South to memorialize the war and preserve Confederate heritage. \nThe first observances were organized by women's groups across the South\, and the earliest recorded observance was in Georgia on April 26\, 1866\, marking the anniversary of Confederate General Johnston's surrender in 1865. \nIt became a means of mourning the South's defeat while fostering regional pride and identity. By the late 19th century\, most Southern states had adopted Confederate Memorial Day as an official holiday. Dates varied by state\, often tied to significant events in the Confederacy's history. \nIn 1973\, Confederate Heroes' Day was established\, and it replaced two separate holidays in Texas: the celebrations of Robert E. Lee's and Jefferson Davis' birthdays. The purpose was to consolidate observances related to Confederate figures into a single day. \nConfederate Heroes' Day is controversial due to its celebration of Confederate figures\, who fought to preserve slavery and opposed the Union during the Civil War. It remains a state holiday in Texas\, but its public observance has declined. During the holiday\, many government offices and businesses do not close for the day. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nOn Confederate Heroes' Day\, activities are generally focused on commemorating Confederate soldiers and leaders who served during the American Civil War (1861–1865). However\, participation in the holiday has declined over time and is now mostly limited to small groups or organizations that focus on preserving Confederate heritage. \nPeople may visit Confederate cemeteries or monuments to lay wreaths and flowers on soldiers' graves. Some memorial speeches often highlight historical figures like General Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. \nSome communities may host parades with period costumes\, Confederate flags\, and historical reenactments of battles or key events. \nMuseums and historical societies will organize lectures\, exhibits\, or discussions about the Civil War and the Confederacy. Tours of historic battlefields\, cemeteries\, and Confederate landmarks are sometimes offered. \nIn some areas\, special church services are held to honor Confederate soldiers. These may include hymns\, sermons\, and prayers dedicated to their memory. \nThe American Civil War (1861–1865)\nThe American Civil War was a pivotal conflict in U.S. history\, fought between the Union (the Northern states) and the Confederacy (the Southern states). The war arose primarily over deep-seated divisions concerning slavery\, states' rights\, and political power. \nThe Southern economy depended heavily on slavery\, while many in the North opposed its expansion into new territories and states. The election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860\, who opposed the spread of slavery\, intensified Southern fears of losing their way of life. \nSouthern states argued for greater autonomy\, particularly regarding their right to maintain slavery and reject federal interference. Following Lincoln's election\, 11 Southern states seceded from the Union to form the Confederate States of America\, led by Jefferson Davis. \nThe war began on April 12\, 1861\, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9\, 1865\, effectively ending the war. The Civil War was the deadliest conflict in U.S. history\, with over 620\,000 deaths and countless others wounded.

The holiday commemorates the armistice signed at Compiègne\, France\, on November 11\, 1918\, between the Allied Powers and Germany\, which took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month\, ending more than four years of brutal conflict. \nBelgium's role in World War I was uniquely tragic and heroic. When Germany invaded Belgium on August 4\, 1914\, violating its neutrality\, the country became one of the first battlefronts of the war. Cities like Liège\, Leuven\, and Ypres were devastated\, and much of western Belgium became a landscape of trenches\, mud\, and destruction. The fierce resistance of the Belgian Army\, under King Albert I\, became a symbol of courage and determination\, earning Belgium international respect and sympathy. \nAfter the war\, the Belgian people began commemorating the armistice to honor the soldiers and civilians who died defending their homeland. The first Armistice Day ceremonies were held in 1919\, and the day was later declared a national public holiday. Memorials were erected across the country\, most notably the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres\, which bears the names of more than 54\,000 Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Ypres Salient and have no known grave. \nOne of the most moving traditions associated with Belgian Armistice Day is the "Last Post" ceremony\, first performed under the Menin Gate in 1928 by the Ypres Fire Brigade. Except during World War II\, this ceremony has been held every evening at 8:00 PM to honor those who fell for freedom. On November 11\, thousands gather there for a special remembrance\, joined by veterans\, dignitaries\, and families from around the world. \nAcross Belgium\, church services\, military parades\, and wreath-laying ceremonies take place each year. The nation pauses to remember not only the end of the First World War but also the human cost of all wars and the importance of peace. \nToday\, Armistice Day in Belgium stands as both a tribute to sacrifice and a reminder of resilience\, reflecting the country's central place in the history of World War I and its enduring message: never again to war.

In Serbia\, November 11 was recognized as a day of remembrance for soldiers and civilians who died in the war. \nThe official symbol of Armistice Day in Serbia is the Natalie's Ramonda flower (Ramonda nathaliae)\, a plant native to Serbia that symbolizes resilience and rebirth\, as it can revive when watered after appearing withered. \nIt is often worn with the Albany Cross ribbon\, honoring soldiers who survived the retreat through Albania. \nArmistice Day was formally reintroduced as a state holiday in 2012. Today\, it stands as a solemn reminder of the heavy toll of WWI on Serbia and the enduring spirit of its people.

Its origins trace back to the end of World War I and have evolved into a national tradition of reflection and gratitude. \nWorld War I ended on November 11\, 1918 at 11:00 AM\, when an armistice agreement was signed between the Allies and Germany. This marked the end of four years of devastating conflict and became a symbol of peace and reflection. \nIn 1919\, the first Armistice Day was observed to commemorate the end of the war and to honor the fallen soldiers. King George V declared it a day of remembrance\, asking people across the British Empire to observe a two-minute silence at 11:00 AM. \nCanada began formally observing Armistice Day in 1921. It was initially combined with Thanksgiving and held on the Monday closest to November 11. This dual observance led to criticism\, as many felt it diluted the solemnity of the occasion. \nIn 1931\, the Canadian Parliament passed legislation to separate Thanksgiving from Armistice Day. November 11 was designated Remembrance Day\, focusing exclusively on honoring military service and sacrifices. \nFollowing World War II (1939–1945) and subsequent conflicts\, Remembrance Day became a time to honor all Canadian military personnel who served and sacrificed in various wars and peacekeeping missions. \nThe red poppy\, inspired by John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields"\, became the symbol of remembrance\, and Canadians wear poppies on their clothing as a tribute to fallen soldiers and a reminder of the cost of freedom. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nOn Remembrance Day\, people participate in a variety of activities to honor and remember the sacrifices of military personnel who served in wars\, conflicts and peacekeeping missions. \nAt 11:00 AM\, Canadians observe a two-minute silence\, symbolizing the exact moment the armistice ended World War I in 1918. This moment is dedicated to reflecting on the sacrifices made by military members and the cost of war. \nWreath-laying ceremonies are held at cenotaphs and war memorials across the country\, such as the National War Memorial in Ottawa. \nThe main national ceremony in Ottawa includes a military parade\, the laying of wreaths by dignitaries\, veterans\, and representatives of various organizations\, and a flyover by military aircraft. \nCanadians wear red poppies on their clothing\, typically over their hearts\, to honor those who served. Proceeds from poppy sales support veterans and their families through the Royal Canadian Legion. \nSchools hold Remembrance Day assemblies where students learn about Canada's military history\, and participate in moments of silence\, poetry readings\, and singing of patriotic songs. \nCities and towns may hold parades featuring veterans\, military personnel\, and community groups. Marching bands\, military vehicles\, and honor guards are common elements. \nMany people make donations to organizations that assist veterans and their families\, and contributions to the poppy campaign help fund services for veterans. \nPoem: In Flanders Fields\nIn Flanders Fields was written in 1915 during World War I by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae (1872–1918)\, a Canadian physician\, soldier and poet. \nIn Flanders Fields\nby John McCrae \n In Flanders fields the poppies blow\nBetween the crosses\, row on row\,\nThat mark our place; and in the sky\nThe larks\, still bravely singing\, fly\nScarce heard amid the guns below. \nWe are the Dead. Short days ago\nWe lived\, felt dawn\, saw sunset glow\,\nLoved and were loved\, and now we lie\nIn Flanders fields. \nTake up our quarrel with the foe:\nTo you from failing hands we throw\nThe torch; be yours to hold it high.\nIf ye break faith with us who die\nWe shall not sleep\, though poppies grow\nIn Flanders fields.

It spread across Europe and became part of the Christian calendar as a major feast. \nIn medieval Catholic Sweden\, November 1 (All Saints' Day) and November 2 (All Souls' Day) were both observed. \nAfter the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s\, Sweden kept the day but shifted its focus less emphasis on canonized saints\, and more on remembering the dead and departed loved ones within Lutheran practice. \nUntil the mid-20th century\, All Saints' Day in Sweden was still tied to November 1. \nIn 1953\, the Swedish parliament decided to move it to a movable Saturday between October 31 and November 6\, making it a public holiday that always falls on a weekend. \nToday\, All Saints' Day is one of Sweden's most solemn holidays. The main tradition is lighting candles on graves\, which turns cemeteries into glowing seas of light across the country.

Over 150\,000 Indigenous children were forcibly taken from their families\, many suffering neglect\, abuse\, and cultural erasure. Thousands died\, and many more were left with lifelong trauma. \nEstablished in 2008\, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) documented the history and ongoing impact of residential schools. Survivors shared their stories\, resulting in the 94 Calls to Action\, which included a recommendation for a statutory holiday to honor survivors and educate the public. \nThe discovery of unmarked graves at former residential school sites in 2021 brought national and international attention to the ongoing impacts of residential schools. This led to renewed calls for tangible action toward reconciliation. \nOn June 3\, 2021\, the Canadian Parliament passed Bill establishing September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day was declared a federal statutory holiday\, beginning in 2021\, to reflect\, honor survivors\, and educate Canadians about Indigenous history and culture. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nOn the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation\, people participate in activities to honor the survivors of residential schools\, commemorate the children who never returned home\, and promote understanding and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. \nWearing orange shirts is a widely recognized act of solidarity\, inspired by Orange Shirt Day. The orange shirt represents the loss of culture\, identity\, and belonging experienced by Indigenous children. Canadians of all backgrounds wear orange to show their commitment to reconciliation and to honor residential school survivors. \nMany communities host ceremonies featuring drumming\, singing\, and prayers led by Indigenous elders. In some areas\, sacred fires are lit as part of healing and remembrance practices. \nSchools\, workplaces\, and community centers organize sessions to educate people about the history of residential schools and their intergenerational impacts. \nFamilies talk about reconciliation and the importance of understanding Canada's shared history. People visit residential school memorials\, museums\, and Indigenous cultural centers to learn more about the history of colonization. Observing moments of silence allows individuals to reflect on the legacy of residential schools and their impacts. \nIndigenous artists\, musicians\, and dancers perform at public gatherings\, showcasing their resilience and culture. \nMany people donate to organizations supporting residential school survivors. Schools often organize age-appropriate activities\, such as storytelling\, art projects\, and discussions\, to teach children about Indigenous cultures and history. \nMore about Orange Shirt Day?\nOrange Shirt Day is observed annually on September 30 in Canada to honor the survivors of residential schools\, remember the children who never returned home\, and raise awareness about the ongoing impacts of these institutions on Indigenous peoples. \nThe day was inspired by the experience of Phyllis Webstad\, a residential school survivor from the First Nation. At the age of six\, Phyllis was sent to a residential school. On her first day\, her new orange shirt – a gift from her grandmother – was taken away and never returned. This act symbolized the stripping away of her identity\, culture\, and dignity. \nHer story became a powerful symbol of the losses experienced by residential school children. Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 as a grassroots effort to promote healing\, reconciliation\, and education about the legacy of residential schools. \nThe date was chosen because it marked the time of year when Indigenous children were taken from their homes to attend residential schools.

Led by Pelayo (Pelagius)\, a Visigoth noble\, Asturian forces defeated a Muslim army in the mountains near Covadonga. \nThough small in scale\, the victory is seen as the beginning of the Reconquista\, the centuries-long Christian effort to reclaim the Iberian Peninsula. As legend tells\, the Virgin of Covadonga (La Santina) interceded spiritually in the battle\, and she later became the patron saint of Asturias. \nThe Catholic Church celebrates September 8 as the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. \nIn Asturias\, this date became closely associated with the Virgin of Covadonga\, giving it both a religious and regional identity. \nAfter Francisco Franco's dictatorship (1939–1975)\, which suppressed regional identities\, Spain's 1978 Constitution granted autonomy to its historic regions. Asturias gained autonomy with the Statute of Autonomy of 1981\, officially recognizing it as an autonomous community. \nIn this context\, September 8 was declared Asturias Day\, uniting the religious devotion to La Santina with the region's modern political and cultural identity.

Shortly after\, Heroes' Day was formalized by the new government to ensure that the sacrifices of liberation war heroes would be remembered by future generations. \nThe National Heroes Acre in Harare was constructed with North Korean assistance in the early 1980s as a symbolic and physical resting place for the most revered figures.

Unlike some neighboring countries\, Zambia's liberation was largely peaceful\, led by the United National Independence Party (UNIP) under Dr. Kenneth Kaunda. \nAfter independence\, the government sought to recognize the individuals and movements who contributed to freedom and nation-building efforts. \nHeroes' Day was officially instituted to: \n– Remember freedom fighters and political leaders involved in the independence movement;\n– Honor civil servants\, educators\, healthcare workers\, military members\, and others who made enduring contributions to national progress;\n– Inspire current and future generations with the spirit of patriotism and sacrifice. \nInitially focused on early nationalist leaders and veterans\, the scope of Heroes' Day has broadened over the years. The holiday now also celebrates ordinary citizens who have served Zambia with distinction in various fields.

These new beliefs clashed with Buganda's traditional culture and challenged the authority of King Mwanga II\, who saw them as a threat to his rule and customs. \nMwanga II demanded that converts renounce their new faith. When they refused\, he ordered their torture and execution. Between 1885 and 1887\, a total of 45 men and boys were killed. They included St. Charles Lwanga (leader of the Catholic converts\, burned alive at Namugongo)\, St. Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe (executed for opposing Mwanga's violent actions)\, and Anglican martyr James Hannington (the first Anglican bishop to Uganda\, murdered in 1885). \nIn 1964\, Pope Paul VI canonized 22 of the Catholic martyrs as saints\, the first African saints to be officially recognized in modern times. The Anglican Church of Uganda also honors its martyrs in its calendar and services. \nThe martyrdom is considered a pivotal moment in the spread of Christianity in Africa and a symbol of faith\, courage and conviction. \nJune 3 became an official public holiday in Uganda and a major religious event\, which stands as a powerful reminder that faith can triumph over fear\, and that courage in the face of injustice can inspire generations.

The Civil War\, which ended in the spring of 1865\, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and necessitated the establishment of the country's first national cemeteries. By the late 1860s\, many communities had started holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers\, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers. \nThe first widespread observance of Decoration Day is believed to have been on May 30\, 1868\, when General John A. Logan\, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans\, called for a nationwide day of remembrance. The holiday originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I\, the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict\, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars. \nFor many years\, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30. But in 1968\, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act\, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. This change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday. Today\, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for all who have died in military service to the United States. \n \nWhat  Do People Do on This Day?\nOn Memorial Day in the United States\, people engage in various activities to honor and remember those who have died in military service. Here are five common ways to celebrate: \nParticipating in National Moment of Remembrance: The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation. \nFlying the Flag: It's common to see the U.S. flag displayed prominently on Memorial Day. The flag is traditionally raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position\, where it remains until noon. It's then raised to full staff for the remainder of the day. \nWearing Red Poppies: Inspired by the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields\," people wear red poppies on Memorial Day as a symbol of remembrance and honor for those who have died in wars. \nVisiting Cemeteries and Memorials: Many people visit cemeteries and memorials\, particularly military ones\, to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers. It's a tradition to decorate graves with American flags\, flowers\, and personal mementos. \nAttending Parades: Many towns and cities hold Memorial Day parades that feature military personnel and veterans\, as well as marching bands and other community organizations. \nThese activities are ways in which Americans express their gratitude and respect for those who have sacrificed their lives in the service of their country. \nThe American Civil War\nThe American Civil War\, fought from 1861 to 1865\, was a defining event in the history of the United States. The primary cause of the Civil War was the contentious issue of slavery\, particularly its expansion into newly formed states and territories. The Northern states\, where slavery was largely prohibited\, opposed its expansion\, while the Southern states wanted to maintain and extend it. \nThe election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860\, who was seen by the South as opposed to the expansion of slavery\, triggered a secession crisis. Eleven Southern states seceded from the Union\, forming the Confederate States of America (South Carolina\, Mississippi\, Florida\, Alabama\, Georgia\, Louisiana\, Texas\, Virginia\, Arkansas\, Tennessee\, and North Carolina). \nThe Civil War included numerous key battles and campaigns. The Battle of Gettysburg was particularly significant as it represented a major turning point\, halting the Confederacy's advance into the North. In 1863\, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation\, which declared the freedom of all enslaved people in Confederate-held territory. This executive order reframed the war's purpose as not only preserving the Union but also abolishing slavery. \nThe Civil War concluded with the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia on April 9\, 1865. \nThe end of the war ushered in the Reconstruction era\, during which the Southern states were gradually reintegrated into the Union\, and efforts were made to protect the legal rights of the newly freed African Americans. The American Civil War profoundly affected the American identity\, shaping issues of race\, equality\, and federal authority that continue to influence the United States. It remains the deadliest military conflict in American history\, with an estimated 620\,000 soldier deaths and countless civilian casualties.

The holiday emerged as part of broader efforts in the South to memorialize the war and preserve Confederate heritage. \nThe first Confederate Memorial Day observances were organized by women's groups across the South\, and the earliest recorded observance was in Georgia on April 26\, 1866\, marking the anniversary of Confederate General Johnston's surrender in 1865. \nThe holiday became a means of mourning the South's defeat while fostering regional pride and identity. By the late 19th century\, most Southern states had adopted Confederate Memorial Day as an official holiday\, however\, the dates varied by state\, often tied to significant events in the Confederacy's history. \nThe holiday became less prominent over time as national observances like Memorial Day gained popularity. Some Southern states\, such as Alabama\, Mississippi\, and South Carolina\, still recognize the holiday\, though public interest has declined. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nThe holiday is controversial due to its celebration of Confederate figures\, who fought to preserve slavery and opposed the Union during the Civil War. The holiday participation in the holiday has declined over time and is now mostly limited to small groups or organizations that focus on preserving Confederate heritage. \nPeople may visit Confederate cemeteries or monuments to lay wreaths and flowers on soldiers' graves. \nSome communities host parades with period costumes\, Confederate flags\, and historical reenactments of battles or key events. \nMuseums and historical societies may organize lectures\, exhibits\, or discussions about the Civil War and the Confederacy. Tours of historic battlefields\, cemeteries\, and Confederate landmarks are sometimes offered. \nIn some areas\, special church services are held to honor Confederate soldiers. These may include hymns\, sermons\, and prayers dedicated to their memory. \nThe American Civil War (1861–1865)\nThe American Civil War (1861–1865) was a pivotal conflict in U.S. history\, fought between the Union (the Northern states) and the Confederacy (the Southern states). Southern states argued for greater autonomy\, particularly regarding their right to maintain slavery and reject federal interference. \nFollowing Lincoln's election\, 11 Southern states seceded from the Union to form the Confederate States of America\, led by Jefferson Davis.

Because of the time difference\, the surrender was announced in Moscow in the early hours of May 9\, which is why Soviet countries mark that date. \nThe war in Europe ended after six years of devastating conflict\, costing millions of lives and reshaping the global political landscape. \nDuring World War II\, known in the USSR as the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945)\, the Soviet Union played a central role in defeating Nazi Germany. \nOver 1.5 million Uzbeks were mobilized into the Red Army. Many fought on key fronts such as Stalingrad\, Leningrad\, and Berlin. Uzbekistan also supported the war effort by sheltering evacuees\, producing wartime supplies\, and contributing agricultural goods. The republic suffered heavy losses\, and countless families were affected by the war's toll. \nVictory Day was a major Soviet holiday\, celebrated with military parades and public events. After gaining independence in 1991\, Uzbekistan retained the holiday but gave it a unique name and emphasizing tribute to both soldiers and civilians affected by war. It's a day of solemn reflection\, not only on military victory but on the suffering endured during the conflict.

Southern states argued for greater autonomy\, particularly regarding their right to maintain slavery and reject federal interference. \nFollowing Lincoln's election\, 11 Southern states seceded from the Union to form the Confederate States of America\, led by Jefferson Davis.

The campaign was part of an Allied strategy to open a sea route to Russia by capturing the Ottoman Empire's capital\, Constantinople (Istanbul). \nHowever\, the ANZAC troops faced fierce resistance from the Ottoman forces\, led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk\, the future founder of modern Turkey. The campaign turned into a brutal\, eight-month-long stalemate with extreme hardship and heavy casualties. Eventually\, the Allied forces withdrew in December 1915 and January 1916. \nDespite the military failure\, the courage displayed by the ANZAC soldiers became a defining moment in the national identities of Australia and New Zealand. \nThe first ANZAC Day was observed on April 25\, 1916\, a year after the Gallipoli landing. It was marked by memorial services and public gatherings in Australia\, New Zealand\, and the United Kingdom. \nDuring World War II (1939-1945)\, ANZAC Day broadened its meaning to honor all Australian and New Zealand soldiers who served in both world wars. By the late 1940s\, the day became a public holiday in most Australian states and New Zealand. \nIn the decades following the wars\, ANZAC Day continued to be a solemn day of remembrance\, though its significance declined somewhat during the 1960s and 1970s. However\, in the 1980s and 1990s\, ANZAC Day saw a resurgence in participation. \nToday\, ANZAC Day is one of the most significant national days in Australia and New Zealand. It honors not only those who fought at Gallipoli but all service members who have served in wars and peacekeeping operations. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nANZAC Day is marked by a range of commemorative and cultural activities across Australia and New Zealand. \nThe Dawn Service is one of the most significant traditions\, held at war memorials and RSL clubs. It starts before sunrise\, symbolizing the time of the Gallipoli landing in 1915\, and the service usually includes: A moment of silence for reflection\, the Last Post played on a bugle\, a prayer and hymns\, recitation of "The Ode of Remembrance"\, and the National Anthems of Australia and New Zealand. \nVeterans\, current service members\, and descendants of ANZAC soldiers participate in parades and marches through major cities and towns. These marches honor past and present service members from various wars and peacekeeping missions. \nThroughout the day\, wreaths of poppies and rosemary (symbols of remembrance) are laid at memorials and cenotaphs. Many communities hold mid-morning memorial services featuring speeches\, readings\, and moments of silence. \nMany Australians and New Zealanders visit national war memorials\, such as Australian War Memorial (Canberra)\, Auckland War Memorial Museum and the Shrine of Remembrance (Melbourne). \nAustralia and New Zealand hold special ANZAC Day sporting matches. \nTwo-Up is a traditional Australian gambling game played on ANZAC Day\, particularly in pubs and RSL clubs. It was popular among WWI soldiers\, and the game is legally permitted only on ANZAC Day in most parts of Australia. \nMore about ANZAC\nThe Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) was a military formation of troops from Australia and New Zealand who fought together during World War I (1914-1918). The name ANZAC has since become a symbol of courage and national identity for both nations. \nThe ANZAC Corps was formed in December 1914 as part of the British Empire's forces. It was initially created for the Gallipoli Campaign (1915) but later served in the Middle East and Western Front. \nThe ANZACs landed at Gallipoli\, Turkey\, on April 25\, 1915\, as part of an Allied invasion against the Ottoman Empire. They faced fierce resistance resulting in a prolonged\, bloody campaign.\nAfter eight months of trench warfare and heavy casualties\, the Allies withdrew from December 1915 to January 1916. \nAfter Gallipoli\, many ANZAC soldiers were redeployed to France and Belgium to fight in trench warfare against Germany from 1916 to 1918. By 1918\, Australian and New Zealand troops played a key role in breaking German lines\, helping end the war. \nThe ANZAC Corps was officially disbanded in 1916\, but ANZAC troops continued to serve throughout World War I. ANZAC soldiers later served in World War II\, Korea\, Vietnam\, and modern conflicts.\nApril 25th\, ANZAC Day\, was established to commemorate their service.
