Although technically a protectorate\, not a colony\, the French controlled Tunisia's political and economic systems\, and Tunisian nationalists gradually began demanding self-rule. By the 1930s\, calls for independence had grown louder. \nOn April 8 and 9\, 1938\, thousands of Tunisians\, led by Neo Destour activists\, organized mass protests in Tunis. Protesters included students\, workers\, and middle-class citizens who saw the moment as urgent for political reform. \nOn April 9\, 1938\, as demonstrators gathered in front of the French General Residence (government building)\, French colonial troops opened fire on the crowds. The official death toll was at least 22\, with hundreds injured and arrested. \nThis moment came to be known as the 1938 Uprising\, and those who died became known as "the martyrs of the nation". Over time\, the memory of the martyrs became a rallying cry for continued resistance\, culminating in Tunisia's independence in 1956. \nOn March 20\, 1956\, Tunisia gained full independence from France. \nIn 1957\, the newly formed Tunisian Republic formally recognized April 9 as Martyrs' Day.

It is serving as a time to remember the dead not with sorrow\, but with joy and hope in Christ's victory over death. \nThe holiday's roots reach back to pagan times\, when Slavic peoples held spring festivals to honor their ancestors. Families would visit graves\, share food\, and celebrate the renewal of nature\, a reflection of the belief that the boundary between the living and the dead was thinnest in spring. When Christianity spread through the Slavic lands in the 10th century\, the Orthodox Church incorporated these ancestral customs into Christian practice\, transforming them into a commemoration of the departed in the light of the Resurrection. \nBy the 14th century\, Radonitsa had become an officially recognized church observance in many parts of Eastern Europe\, including Belarus\, Russia\, and Ukraine. The name itself derives from the Slavic word radost\, meaning "joy"\, symbolizing the faithful's rejoicing that the dead share in the promise of eternal life through Christ. \nTraditionally\, families attend a memorial service at church and then visit cemeteries\, where they clean graves\, decorate them with flowers\, light candles\, and share festive foods—especially dyed Easter eggs\, representing rebirth and resurrection. Food is sometimes left symbolically for the departed\, and family members greet each other with Easter greetings\, such as "Christ is Risen!" \nIn modern Belarus\, Radonitsa is both a religious and public holiday\, officially recognized since 1992. It remains a heartfelt day of remembrance\, family unity\, and faith\, honoring loved ones through both prayer and celebration\, as life and resurrection triumph over grief.

Its purpose was to honor workers who had died\, been injured\, or fallen ill due to unsafe working conditions\, while also advocating for stronger workplace safety laws and protections. \nThe date April 28 was chosen because it coincides with the day when the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) came into effect in 1971\, symbolizing the global movement for safer workplaces. Over time\, the observance spread worldwide\, gaining recognition from trade unions\, governments and the International Labour Organization (ILO)\, which officially acknowledged it in 2001 as the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. \nGibraltar adopted Workers' Memorial Day in the early 2000s\, following the example of the UK and other Commonwealth countries. The government\, in partnership with unions and employers\, recognized the importance of dedicating a day to raise awareness about workplace safety. \nThe first formal Workers' Memorial Day ceremony in Gibraltar was held in 2002\, marking a turning point in the territory's approach to occupational health and safety awareness. In subsequent years\, Workers' Memorial Day became a permanent fixture in Gibraltar's annual calendar\, observed jointly by the Government of Gibraltar and trade unions. Today\, in Gibraltar\, Workers' Memorial Day stands as a powerful symbol of solidarity and a reminder of responsibility.
