Their aim was to surprise Israel\, reclaim lost territory\, and restore Arab military credibility. \nThe attack was planned for October 6\, 1973\, during Yom Kippur\, the holiest day in Judaism\, and during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. \nOn October 6\, 1973\, Syrian forces attacked the Israeli-held Golan Heights\, while Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal into Sinai.
