African mineworkers protested against increased taxation and low wages in the Copperbelt mining region. This was one of the first major African labor protests in colonial Zambia and laid the foundation for later labor activism and political change. \nAfter Zambia gained independence from Britain in 1964\, the new government recognized the importance of the labor movement\, which had played a role in the independence struggle. \nUnder the leadership of President Kenneth Kaunda\, the government worked with labor unions to institutionalize May 1st as Labour Day.

This reflects the territory's integration into the broader French administrative and cultural framework. \nOn Labour Day\, schools\, government offices\, and most businesses close\, allowing residents to participate in various activities.

It was used as an opportunity to mobilize workers and farmers to support the fight against French colonial rule and later against imperialist forces. \nAfter the success of the August Revolution in 1945\, which led to the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam)\, Labour Day became an official public holiday in the North. \nFollowing the end of the Vietnam War in 1975 and the reunification of North and South Vietnam\, May 1st was declared a national public holiday across the entire country. \nIn recent decades\, while state ceremonies and recognition events continue\, Labour Day has also become a time for relaxation and travel\, especially since it falls right after Reunification Day (April 30th).

This was part of broader efforts at the time to introduce labor protections and rights following decades of worker activism. \nThe day became a symbol of workers' rights and social justice\, highlighting the struggles and contributions of laborers across all sectors. \nLabour Day in Venezuela is both a day of rest and political significance. In many years\, the President of Venezuela has used Labour Day as an occasion to announce new labor policies\, especially given Venezuela's history of economic challenges and high inflation.

This event led to the establishment of May 1st as International Workers' Day\, commemorating labor rights and solidarity worldwide. \nWhile Vanuatu's specific historical events related to Labour Day are not extensively documented\, the nation observes this day in solidarity with the international labor movement\, recognizing the contributions of workers to society. \nIn Vanuatu\, Labour Day is marked by various activities such as public events\, community gatherings and advocacy for fair wages and safe working conditions.

This event inspired Labour movements worldwide. \nUruguay was one of the first Latin American countries to observe Labour Day. The first Labour Day celebration in Uruguay took place on May 1\, 1890\, in Montevideo\, organized by workers' associations and trade unions inspired by European Labour movements. \nUruguay officially declared May 1st a national public holiday\, making it one of the earliest countries in the Americas to formally recognize Labour Day at the government level. \nThe day became a time for workers to gather publicly\, march\, and demand better Labour conditions\, including shorter working hours\, fair wages and improved workplace safety.

While the holiday's origins trace back to the late 19th century\, Uganda's specific historical engagement with Labour Day reflects its unique socio-political context. \nThe global observance of Labour Day began after the 1886 Haymarket Affair in Chicago\, where workers striking for an eight-hour workday faced violent repression. This event led to the establishment of May 1st as a day to honor workers' contributions and rights. \nIn Uganda\, the formal recognition of Labour Day as a public holiday is part of the country's broader commitment to acknowledging workers' roles in national development. The specific date when Uganda officially recognized Labour Day as a national holiday is not clearly documented. Trade unions in Uganda have played a significant role in advocating for workers' rights. \nThe first unions emerged during the British colonial period\, with the formation of the Uganda African Motor Drivers' Association in 1939. The Uganda Trade Union Congress (UTUC)\, founded in 1955\, was the country's first national center. Over the years\, the labor movement in Uganda has evolved\, influenced by various political and social changes.

It began after the Haymarket Affair (Chicago\, 1886)\, where workers striking for an eight-hour workday faced violent suppression. May 1 was later adopted worldwide as a day to celebrate workers' struggles and achievements. \nThe first May Day events in South Africa were recorded in 1928\, organized mainly by white workers and leftist groups. However\, Black South African workers were excluded from most unions and faced harsh racial discrimination\, low wages\, and exploitative working conditions under colonial and segregationist policies. \nFrom 1948 to 1994 (Under apartheid)\, racial oppression extended deeply into the workplace. \nIn the 1950s to 1970s\, Black workers began to organize despite restrictions\, forming underground unions and staging strikes. \nIn the 1980s\, May Day gained huge significance as a symbol of both labour rights and anti-apartheid resistance. \nAfter South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994\, the new government under Nelson Mandela officially recognized May 1 as International Workers' Day\, a public holiday. \nIn 1986\, after decades of campaigning\, May Day was declared a paid public holiday by the apartheid government — a concession to growing worker militancy. \nInternational Workers' Day in South Africa recognized both the global labour movement and the critical role of South African workers in the struggle for democracy.

In the late 18th century\, the British helped establish Freetown as a home for freed slaves from Britain\, North America\, and the Caribbean. \nIn 1808\, Freetown officially became a British Crown Colony\, and in 1896 the surrounding interior was declared a British Protectorate. This dual colonial structure (colony + protectorate) remained in place until independence. \nDuring the 20th century\, Sierra Leoneans increasingly demanded political participation and self-rule. After World War II\, African nationalism surged\, and in Sierra Leone this was led by political groups. \nIn the 1950s\, Britain introduced gradual reforms\, including elections and greater local self-governance. By 1958\, the SLPP under Sir Milton Margai had become the dominant political force\, guiding the transition to independence. \nAfter constitutional negotiations in London and Freetown\, an agreement was reached to grant Sierra Leone full sovereignty. \nOn April 27\, 1961\, Sierra Leone officially gained independence from Britain. The Union Jack was lowered\, and the new Sierra Leone national flag was raised in Brookfields Stadium\, Freetown. \nIndependence was celebrated with parades\, cultural performances\, and national pride\, symbolizing a fresh chapter in Sierra Leone's history.

Slovenians faced repression\, forced assimilation\, deportations\, and executions under the occupying powers. \nOn April 27\, 1941\, Slovenian political and cultural groups came together in Ljubljana to form the Liberation Front of the Slovenian People (Osvobodilna fronta – OF). \nThe coalition included communists\, Christian socialists\, Sokols (a nationalist gymnastic group)\, and liberal intellectuals. Its goal was to organize resistance against the occupiers and to fight for the freedom of Slovenia. \nThe OF coordinated armed resistance and eventually joined forces with the broader Yugoslav Partisan movement\, led by Josip Broz Tito. \nSlovenian Partisans played a major role in disrupting Axis operations and protecting civilians. The resistance became a central part of Slovenia's identity in the fight against fascism. \nAfter WWII\, the date April 27 was chosen as Resistance Day (Dan upora proti okupatorju) to honor the creation of the Liberation Front. \nIt symbolized unity\, defiance\, and the will to resist foreign domination. Even after Slovenia's independence in 1991\, the holiday remained important as a marker of national resilience and pride.

They faced forced removals\, segregated education\, restrictions on movement and systemic discrimination. Opposition came from liberation movements like the African National Congress (ANC)\, the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC)\, and grassroots resistance\, often met with violent repression. \nBy the late 1980s\, apartheid faced growing internal resistance and international pressure through sanctions and boycotts. In 1990\, Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years in prison\, signaling the beginning of negotiations. Multi-party talks led to the dismantling of apartheid laws and preparations for democratic elections. \nOn April 27\, 1994\, South Africa held its first democratic elections\, open to all races. Millions of South Africans\, many voting for the first time in their lives\, stood in long lines to cast their ballots. \nThe elections marked the official end of apartheid. The African National Congress (ANC) won the majority\, and Nelson Mandela was elected the first Black President of South Africa. \nTo commemorate this historic turning point\, the new democratic government declared April 27 as Freedom Day\, a national public holiday. First celebrated in 1995\, it honors both the liberation struggle and the achievement of democracy.

Togo became known as a model German colony\, with infrastructure developed primarily for export. \nIn 1916\, after Germany's defeat in World War I\, the League of Nations divided Togoland into British Togoland (later integrated into Ghana) and French Togoland\, which remained under French control. \nFrench Togoland was administered as a League of Nations mandate\, then a UN Trust Territory after WWII. During the 1950s\, France allowed limited self-government under pressure from independence movements across Africa. \nIn 1956\, a referendum gave French Togoland autonomy under French oversight. \nOn April 27\, 1960\, France granted full independence to Togo\, and the country became the Togolese Republic. Olympio became Togo's first president in 1961 after the country adopted its own constitution.

Tanganyika gained independence on December 9\, 1961\, under President Julius Nyerere\, and became a republic in 1962. \n– Zanzibar was historically ruled by Arab sultans and a hub of Indian Ocean trade\, and it became a British protectorate in the 19th century. Zanzibar gained independence on December 10\, 1963\, as a constitutional monarchy under Sultan Jamshid bin Abdullah. Just weeks later\, on January 12\, 1964\, the Zanzibar Revolution overthrew the sultanate. Abeid Amani Karume became president of the newly declared People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba. \nOn April 22\, 1964\, Tanganyika and Zanzibar signed the Articles of Union\, a legal agreement for political integration. \nOn April 26\, 1964\, the union was officially declared. The new country was initially called the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar\, but it was renamed "Tanzania" later that year\, a blend of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. \nOn that same date\, April 26 was declared a national holiday\, now known as Union Day (Siku ya Muungano)\, to be observed annually across the country.

The regime promoted nationalism\, censorship\, and political repression\, banning opposition parties and independent unions. Citizens were monitored by the secret police (PIDE)\, and dissent was often punished. \nOn April 25\, 1974\, a peaceful military coup organized by the Armed Forces Movement overthrew the Estado Novo regime. The revolution began in the early morning. Soldiers and tanks took control of key points in Lisbon\, including radio stations\, airports\, and government buildings\, facing minimal resistance. \nOrdinary citizens joined the soldiers in the streets\, offering them red carnations\, which they placed in their rifle barrels and on their uniforms\, giving the revolution its name "The Carnation Revolution". By the end of the day\, the dictatorship had collapsed\, Prime Minister Marcelo Caetano surrendered\, and political prisoners were freed. \nThe revolution marked the end of 48 years of dictatorship and initiated a transition toward democracy and decolonization. In 1975\, Portugal held its first free elections in half a century to elect the Constituent Assembly\, which drafted a new democratic constitution adopted in 1976. The revolution also led to the independence of Portugal's African colonies\, ending the long colonial wars. \nApril 25 was declared Liberty Day\, a national holiday honoring the revolution and the restoration of democratic freedoms. It commemorates the courage of the soldiers and civilians who ended the dictatorship without widespread violence. \nLiberty Day stands as one of Portugal's most meaningful national holidays\, a day when the nation remembers that even the most repressive systems can be overthrown through unity\, courage and peace.

In July 1943\, Mussolini was deposed and arrested\, and the new Italian government signed an armistice with the Allies on September 8\, 1943. \nHowever\, Germany quickly invaded northern and central Italy\, freeing Mussolini and setting up a puppet state—the Italian Social Republic—based in Salò\, northern Italy. From 1943 to 1945\, Italy was divided: the south under Allied control and the north under Nazi and Fascist forces. \nIn response to the occupation\, Italian citizens formed the Resistance\, a broad alliance of partisans from diverse political backgrounds: communists\, socialists\, Catholics\, liberals and monarchists. These groups carried out sabotage\, intelligence and guerrilla warfare against Nazi troops and Fascist militias. The National Liberation Committee (CLN) coordinated the resistance and served as a provisional political authority. \nOn April 25\, 1945\, the National Liberation Committee (CLN) in Milan called for a general uprising across northern Italy. Cities including Milan\, Turin\, and Genoa were liberated by partisans before Allied troops arrived. \nWithin days\, Mussolini was captured and executed (April 28\, 1945). The liberation marked the end of Nazi occupation and the collapse of Fascism in Italy. \nIn 1946\, the Italian government declared April 25 a national holiday to commemorate liberation and honor those who fought for freedom. It became a lasting symbol of Italy's transition from dictatorship to democracy and its path toward becoming a republic.

Many in Castile opposed his heavy taxation and the influence of foreign advisors at court. \nThis discontent led to the Revolt of the Comuneros (1520–1521)\, a popular uprising of townspeople and local nobles demanding greater autonomy and protection of traditional rights. \nThe revolt culminated at the Battle of Villalar (Valladolid province) on April 23\, 1521. Royalist troops defeated the rebel army\, and the leaders of the revolt (Juan de Padilla\, Juan Bravo\, and Francisco Maldonado) were captured. On April 24\, 1521\, the three leaders were executed\, symbolizing the defeat of the Comuneros. \nAlthough the revolt failed\, the Comuneros became a symbol of resistance\, civic freedoms\, and local rights in Castile. During the 19th century\, amid Spain's liberal movements\, their struggle was reinterpreted as an early fight for constitutionalism and democracy. By the 20th century\, intellectuals\, regionalists\, and democrats in Castile embraced the Comuneros as icons of Castilian identity and self-government. \nAfter Spain's 1978 Constitution created autonomous communities\, Castile and León adopted its Statute of Autonomy in 1983. \nThat same year\, April 23 was officially declared the Day of Castile and León\, linking the region's identity to the memory of the Comuneros and the Battle of Villalar.

Tensions grew between Jews\, Arabs\, and the British\, leading to violence and international debate. \nOn November 29\, 1947\, the United Nations General Assembly voted for the Partition Plan\, recommending the division of Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state\, with Jerusalem under international administration. The Jewish leadership accepted the plan\, while Arab leaders rejected it\, leading to escalating conflict. \nOn May 14\, 1948 (5 Iyar 5708 in the Hebrew calendar)\, David Ben-Gurion\, head of the Jewish Agency\, declared the establishment of the State of Israel in Tel Aviv. The declaration came hours before the British Mandate officially ended. The new state was immediately recognized by the United States and later by the Soviet Union and other nations. \nWithin hours of the declaration\, neighboring Arab countries (Egypt\, Jordan\, Syria\, Lebanon\, and Iraq) invaded. This began the 1948 Arab–Israeli War (known in Israel as the War of Independence). \nDespite being outnumbered and poorly armed\, Jewish forces (later the Israel Defense Forces\, IDF) prevailed. By 1949\, armistice agreements were signed\, and Israel had secured more territory than originally allocated by the UN plan. \nThe first Yom Ha'atzmaut was celebrated on May 4–5\, 1949\, marking the first anniversary of statehood. It was designated as a national holiday and has been celebrated annually on the 5th of Iyar (or adjusted for Shabbat) ever since.

On this date\, Samoan chiefs from Tutuila formally ceded their islands to the United States. Four years later\, in 1904\, the chiefs of Manu'a also signed a treaty of cession\, bringing the entire island group under U.S. sovereignty. Together\, these agreements laid the foundation for American Samoa as an unincorporated U.S. territory. \nThe first Flag Day took place on April 17\, 1900\, when the U.S. flag was raised over Tutuila after the treaty was signed. This event was attended by local chiefs\, community members\, and U.S. naval representatives. The ceremony symbolized both the beginning of American Samoa's political relationship with the United States and the blending of Samoan traditions with American governance. \nOver time\, April 17 became recognized as the territory's most important public holiday. The U.S. Navy\, which administered American Samoa until 1951\, helped organize annual ceremonies. Later\, after administration shifted to the U.S. Department of the Interior\, the government of American Samoa continued the tradition\, making it a central part of the islands' identity. \nToday\, Flag Day is not only a commemoration of political history but also a celebration of Samoan culture and heritage.

Syrian nationalists declared independence\, and King Faisal I briefly ruled an Arab Kingdom based in Damascus. \nIn July 1920\, France invaded Syria and defeated King Faisal's forces at the Battle of Maysalun\, establishing the French Mandate for Syria. \nFrom 1925 to 1927\, a widespread uprising against French colonial rule\, involving rural and urban populations. Though the revolt was suppressed\, it fueled nationalist sentiment and is remembered as a pivotal moment in Syria's struggle for independence. \nA 1936 Franco-Syrian Treaty promised eventual independence but was never ratified by the French Parliament. During World War II\, Syria came under Vichy French control\, then was taken by Free French and British forces in 1941. \nIn 1941\, General Catroux of Free France proclaimed Syria's independence\, but the French military presence remained. After years of Syrian diplomatic pressure and international support from newly formed United Nations\, France agreed to withdraw. \nOn April 17\, 1946\, the last French soldiers left Syria\, completing the country's journey to full independence.

This surrender led to the Bataan Death March\, a forced 100-kilometer march from Bataan to prison camps in Capas\, Tarlac. During the march\, thousands died due to starvation\, exhaustion\, disease\, and brutal treatment by Japanese captors. \nThe defenders of Bataan and Corregidor became enduring symbols of bravery\, sacrifice\, and resilience. In 1942\, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt praised the Filipino and American defenders for their courage\, calling them heroes of democracy. \nAfter the war\, the Philippines sought to officially honor the sacrifices of WWII soldiers. In 1961\, President Diosdado Macapagal declared April 9 as Bataan Day. \nIt was later renamed Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) to highlight the gallantry not just of those in Bataan but of all Filipino veterans who defended the country.

In 1861\, Southland Province was officially established after separating from Otago Province. \nThe split was driven by dissatisfaction among settlers in the deep south\, who felt that revenue from local land sales was being diverted to Dunedin rather than being used for Southland's development. Invercargill became the capital of the new province. \nSouthland Province only lasted for nine years. The province struggled financially\, taking on debt to fund ambitious infrastructure projects such as roads and railways. \nBy 1870\, Southland was reabsorbed into Otago Province\, making it one of the shortest-lived provinces in New Zealand history. \nIn 1876\, all provincial governments in New Zealand were abolished and replaced by a centralized system of government with local councils. Despite this\, provincial anniversary days were retained as regional public holidays. \nSouthland\, even though it had only existed as a province for nine years\, kept its anniversary day as a marker of its distinct regional identity. \nUnlike most anniversary days\, which are tied to specific historical dates\, Southland Anniversary Day is observed on Easter Tuesday (the Tuesday after Easter Monday). This unusual timing was chosen to give Southland residents an extended Easter break\, making it more practical and popular.

He also began construction of the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). \nThis transition ended the short-lived Thonburi period and ushered in a more stable era that preserved Siamese independence and strengthened royal authority. \nThe holiday was officially established in 1932\, during the reign of King Rama VII (Prajadhipok)\, shortly before Thailand transitioned to a constitutional monarchy.

The French began settling in Saint-Louis (1659) and Gorée Island\, eventually establishing Senegal as a French colony by the 19th century. Senegal became a key administrative and trading hub for French West Africa (Afrique-Occidentale française\, AOF). \nIn the push for decolonization after World War II\, African states began demanding greater autonomy. \nOn April 4\, 1959\, Senegal joined with French Sudan (now Mali) to form the Mali Federation\, an experiment in African unity supported by France. The federation was granted independence from France on April 4\, 1960. \nThe Mali Federation was short-lived. Internal disagreements led to its collapse in August 1960. \nSenegal declared itself a sovereign independent republic on August 20\, 1960\, but the date of April 4 was retained as the official Independence Day\, since it marked the original freedom from French colonial rule. \nLéopold Sédar Senghor\, a poet\, philosopher\, and statesman\, became the country's first president. \nIndependence Day is Senegal's most important national holiday. The holiday emphasizes both national pride and Senegal's commitment to democracy and African unity.

Slavery was abolished in 1848\, but the islands remained under Danish control\, with limited rights for the majority Black population. \nIn the early 1900s\, the U.S. government saw strategic value in the islands\, particularly to protect shipping lanes near the Panama Canal during World War I. \nA treaty was signed on August 4\, 1916\, in which the U.S. agreed to purchase the islands from Denmark for $25 million in gold. The formal Transfer Ceremony occurred on March 31\, 1917. \nInitially\, the islands were governed by the U.S. Navy until 1931. In 1954\, the U.S. Congress passed the Revised Organic Act\, giving the territory a civil government and greater autonomy. \nU.S. citizenship was granted to Virgin Islanders in 1927. Today\, the U.S. Virgin Islands remain an unincorporated territory\, with representation in Congress through a non-voting delegate. \nTransfer Day is a public holiday\, particularly celebrated on St. Thomas\, and it's a time for reflection on colonial history\, cultural identity\, and the ongoing conversation about self-determination and political status.

For nearly 400 years\, Greeks lived under Ottoman rule\, though Greek culture and the Orthodox faith were preserved\, largely through the influence of the Church. \nBy the late 18th and early 19th centuries\, nationalist ideas spread across Europe\, inspiring Greeks to seek self-determination. The "Society of Friends"\, founded in 1814\, was a secret organization dedicated to planning a revolt against the Ottomans. \nOn March 25\, 1821\, Bishop Germanos of Patras is said to have raised the banner of revolution at the Monastery of Agia Lavra in the Peloponnese. This symbolic act marked the beginning of the Greek War of Independence. The revolution quickly spread across the Peloponnese\, Central Greece\, and the islands. \nThe struggle was fierce\, with major battles and massacres on both sides\, such as the sieges of Missolonghi and Tripolitsa. Despite setbacks\, the Greek cause gained international sympathy\, especially in Britain\, France\, and Russia. \nThe Battle of Navarino (1827)\, where British\, French\, and Russian fleets destroyed the Ottoman-Egyptian navy\, was decisive in securing Greek independence. The London Protocol of 1830 formally recognized Greece as an independent state. In 1832\, Greece was established as a kingdom\, with Otto of Bavaria as its first king. \nMarch 25 was chosen as Independence Day because it coincides with the Feast of the Annunciation in the Orthodox Church\, symbolizing both national liberation and spiritual rebirth. \nSince the 19th century\, it has been celebrated with parades\, church services and patriotic events\, making it one of Greece's most important national holidays.

On March 23\, 1848\, the John Wickliffe arrived in Otago Harbour\, bringing the first group of settlers sent by the Free Church of Scotland. A few weeks later\, the Philip Laing followed with additional settlers. \nThese arrivals marked the beginning of organized European settlement in the region and the establishment of Dunedin as the center of the new community. The settlement was envisioned as a planned Scottish colony\, with Presbyterian and cultural roots that still influence Otago's identity today. \nUnder the New Zealand Constitution Act 1852\, Otago became one of New Zealand's provinces. Each province selected an Anniversary Day to commemorate its foundation. \nFor Otago\, March 23\, the date of the John Wickliffe's arrival\, was chosen. Anniversary Days were major community events\, with parades\, civic gatherings\, and celebrations of regional identity. \nWhen New Zealand's provincial governments were abolished in 1876\, Anniversary Days remained as regional public holidays. \nOtago Anniversary Day continued to be recognized\, linking the region to its Scottish heritage and early settlement history. \nToday\, the day is mostly used as a regional holiday for rest\, leisure\, and community events\, with less formal historical commemoration than in the 19th century.

These laws required black citizens to carry passbooks to justify their presence in areas reserved for whites. \nThe demonstration was peaceful\, but heavily armed police opened fire on the unarmed crowd. 69 people were killed and more than 180 were injured\, many shot in the back while fleeing. The Sharpeville Massacre shocked the world and became a turning point in the fight against apartheid. \nFollowing the massacre\, protests spread across South Africa. The apartheid government declared a state of emergency\, banning political organizations like the African National Congress (ANC) and Pan Africanist Congress (PAC). \nThe tragedy drew global condemnation and intensified both domestic and international resistance against apartheid. \nWith the end of apartheid and the arrival of democracy in 1994\, South Africa's new government under Nelson Mandela declared March 21 as Human Rights Day. \nThe holiday was meant to commemorate those who lost their lives in Sharpeville and other struggles for freedom\, celebrate the rights guaranteed in South Africa's new Constitution (1996)\, especially the Bill of Rights\, and educate citizens about their rights and responsibilities in a democratic society.
