The First Sudanese Civil War (1955–1972) erupted even before Sudan gained full independence from Britain and Egypt\, as southern Sudanese groups resisted domination by Khartoum. The Addis Ababa Agreement of 1972 granted the South a measure of autonomy\, but this peace collapsed in 1983 when the government revoked autonomy and tried to impose Islamic law nationwide. \nThis sparked the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005)\, led by the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) under John Garang. The war was one of the longest and deadliest in Africa\, costing more than 2 million lives and displacing millions. \nIn 2005\, the SPLM/A and the Sudanese government signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). This treaty ended active conflict\, granted southern Sudan six years of autonomy\, and promised a referendum on independence in 2011. Though John Garang died in a helicopter crash shortly after the Agreement\, his successor Salva Kiir Mayardit carried forward the vision for independence. \nFrom January 9 to 15\, 2011\, the referendum was held under international monitoring. The results were overwhelming: 98.83% of voters chose independence. The outcome reflected decades of struggle and the aspirations of the southern people for self-rule. \nOn July 9\, 2011\, South Sudan was officially declared the world's newest nation. Salva Kiir Mayardit was sworn in as the first President\, and the new flag of South Sudan was raised in Juba. Just days later\, on July 14\, 2011\, South Sudan joined the United Nations as its 193rd member.

Over the centuries\, British-appointed governors ruled The Bahamas\, and political power remained in the hands of a small elite. The majority Black population was politically and economically marginalized. \nIn June 1942\, the Burma Road Riot took place in Nassau\, The Bahamas\, which is a major labor protest by Black Bahamian workers demanding fair wages and rights. \nIn 1953 the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) was formed\, which is the first political party to challenge the ruling elite. \nIn 1962\, the introduction of universal adult suffrage which allowed women and men could vote equally. \nIn 1967\, the landmark general election brought Majority Rule\, with the PLP\, led by Sir Lynden Pindling\, forming the first Black-led government. \nIn 1972\, the Bahamas held constitutional talks with the United Kingdom about full independence. \nOn July 10\, 1973\, The Bahamas officially gained independence from Britain. A midnight ceremony was held in Nassau\, where the Union Jack was lowered\, and the new Bahamian national flag was raised for the first time. \nSir Lynden Pindling became the first Prime Minister of the newly independent Bahamas. The Bahamas became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations\, with the British monarch remaining as ceremonial head of state.

While Tutuila and Aunu'u became part of the United States through the Treaty of Cession of Tutuila (April 17\, 1900)\, Manu'a remained under the leadership of its local chiefs\, especially Tui Manu'a Elisara\, who was the last traditional sovereign of Manu'a. \nOn July 16\, 1904\, Tui Manu'a Elisara and other chiefs signed the Treaty of Cession of Manu'a. The treaty ceded sovereignty of Manu'a to the United States\, completing the unification of all the islands of American Samoa under U.S. authority. \nUnlike Tutuila\, where there was little resistance\, Manu'a's cession was more sensitive because the Tui Manu'a title carried deep cultural and political importance. As part of the agreement\, the U.S. promised to respect Samoan customs\, land rights\, and traditions\, allowing the fa'a Samoa (Samoan way of life) to remain central in daily governance. \nAfter 1904\, Manu'a came under the administration of the U.S. Navy\, which governed American Samoa until 1951. \nTui Manu'a Elisara\, who signed the treaty\, passed away in 1909\, marking the symbolic end of the Tui Manu'a monarchy. The title has not been officially revived since. The holiday underscores the importance of unity within American Samoa and highlights how the treaties of 1900 and 1904 together shaped the territory's modern identity.

The date marks the oath-taking of King Leopold I\, the country's first monarch\, symbolizing Belgium's independence\, unity\, and democratic foundations. \nBelgium declared independence from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1830\, following years of political\, religious\, and cultural tension. The Belgian Revolution began in August 1830\, sparked by dissatisfaction with Dutch rule and fueled by demands for civil liberties\, freedom of religion\, and political representation. After months of conflict\, a provisional government declared Belgium's independence on October 4\, 1830\, and a National Congress was convened to draft a liberal constitution—one of the most progressive in Europe at the time. \nTo provide stability and international recognition\, the Congress decided that Belgium would become a constitutional monarchy. In June 1831\, Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha\, a German nobleman with strong ties to Britain and European royalty\, was chosen as King of the Belgians. On July 21\, 1831\, Leopold swore allegiance to the Belgian Constitution before Parliament\, formally assuming the throne and solidifying the new nation's sovereignty. \nThe anniversary of this event became Belgium's National Day\, symbolizing both independence and constitutional democracy. Since the mid-19th century\, it has been observed with official ceremonies\, military parades\, church services\, and public festivities. \nIn Brussels\, the capital\, celebrations traditionally begin with a Te Deum service attended by the royal family at the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula\, followed by a military and civil parade at the Place des Palais\, where crowds wave Belgian flags and cheer for the King. Across the country\, towns host concerts\, cultural events\, and fireworks displays\, uniting citizens from all linguistic and regional communities. \nToday\, National Day stands as a proud celebration of Belgium's independence\, monarchy\, and national unity\, reflecting the enduring values of liberty\, pluralism\, and cooperation that continue to define the Belgian identity.

Each valley had its own councils and rules\, making collective decisions difficult. \nOn July 28\, 1778\, representatives of several Cantabrian valleys met in Puente San Miguel (Reocín) and agreed to form the Province of Cantabria. This was the first formal unification of the Cantabrian valleys\, giving the region a common institutional identity and greater political cohesion. \nThe agreement established a framework for shared governance\, collective defense\, and economic coordination among the valleys. It marked a turning point in Cantabria's self-identity\, laying the foundation for its later recognition as a distinct historical and cultural region within Spain. \nThe Day of the Institutions of Cantabria was officially established in the 1990s by the Government of Cantabria. \nThe chosen date\, July 28\, commemorates the exact day in 1778 when the Province of Cantabria was created.

The holiday was first celebrated in 1933 during the reign of King Mohammed V\, becoming an annual expression of loyalty and unity. \nAt the time\, Morocco was still under French colonial rule (1912–1956). The celebration served as a peaceful act of resistance\, expressing national identity and allegiance to the Moroccan monarchy rather than the colonial authorities. \nDuring the struggle for independence\, Throne Day became a patriotic rallying point. Moroccans used it to demonstrate their support for King Mohammed V\, who symbolized the fight for sovereignty and national dignity. \nWhen the French exiled the King in 1953\, widespread protests and uprisings broke out across Morocco\, especially on Throne Day\, which helped sustain the independence movement. After independence was achieved in 1956\, the monarchy was restored\, and Throne Day became a national symbol of freedom and unity. \nUnder King Hassan II (1961–1999)\, Throne Day continued as a major national event\, marked by official ceremonies\, parades\, and the King's traditional Throne Speech. \nSince King Mohammed VI's accession in 1999\, Throne Day has been celebrated on July 30\, the date of his enthronement. The holiday highlights the modernization and development of Morocco\, as well as the continuity of the Alaouite dynasty\, which has ruled since the 17th century. \nToday\, Throne Day is a day of national pride and reflection. It celebrates the enduring relationship between the monarch and the Moroccan people\, reinforcing national identity and cohesion.

It marks the day when enslaved Africans and their descendants across the British Empire were finally granted freedom after centuries of bondage. \nSlavery in Bermuda began in the early 1600s\, shortly after the island was settled by the English. Enslaved Africans\, along with Indigenous people brought from the Americas\, were forced into labor on farms\, in households\, shipyards\, and salt industries. Despite the island's small size\, slavery was deeply embedded in its economic and social structure. \nGrowing global and local resistance to slavery led to change. In 1833\, the British Parliament passed the Slavery Abolition Act\, which came into effect across the empire on August 1\, 1834. On that day\, roughly 4\,000 enslaved Bermudians were emancipated. Although freedom initially came with restrictions\, such as a four-year "apprenticeship" system\, it marked the beginning of a new era of self-determination\, community building\, and cultural identity for Black Bermudians. \nFor generations\, Bermudians honored Emancipation Day through church services and community gatherings. In the early 20th century\, the observance became intertwined with one of Bermuda's most famous traditions: Cup Match\, a two-day cricket tournament that began informally in the late 1800s. Black Bermudians organized the match as a way to celebrate their freedom\, with the teams representing the two ends of the island — Somerset (West End) and St. George's (East End). \nAs the event grew in popularity\, it brought together people of all races and backgrounds\, transforming into a major national celebration. In 1947\, the Bermuda government officially recognized Emancipation Day as a public holiday. \nToday\, Emancipation Day continues to serve both as a commemoration and a celebration. It honors the strength and resilience of ancestors who endured enslavement while celebrating Bermuda's unity\, culture\, and progress. Emancipation Day stands as a powerful reminder of Bermuda's journey from oppression to freedom\, and of the enduring legacy of those who fought for justice\, dignity\, and equality.

This landmark legislation freed thousands of enslaved Africans in the territory\, transforming the social and cultural foundation of the islands. \nFreedom was initially granted through a system of apprenticeship\, but full emancipation soon followed\, giving rise to new communities\, traditions\, and cultural resilience. \nAfter emancipation\, August 1 was remembered with religious services\, prayer gatherings\, and community events\, especially in churches led by freed people and their descendants. \nThe day served as a time for reflection and thanksgiving\, honoring both the hardships of slavery and the triumph of freedom. \nOver time\, emancipation celebrations became more formalized\, incorporating parades\, music\, and cultural expression alongside religious observances. \nBy the 20th century\, Emancipation Day had expanded into a larger community festival\, evolving into today's Emancipation Festival. To give the community a long weekend of remembrance and celebration\, the first Monday in August was officially designated as Emancipation Monday\, a public holiday. \nEmancipation Monday is now the centerpiece of the BVI's two-week Emancipation Festival. It is best known for the Grand Parade in Road Town\, where colorful costumes\, floats\, and dancing fill the streets.

At the time\, most Icelanders worked in farming and fishing\, and those in commerce often had no formal breaks. The holiday was meant to give them a much-needed summer rest. \nThe holiday became officially recognized in the first decades of the 1900s\, aligning with other European traditions of granting workers in trade and services a dedicated day off. It was originally tied to commerce workers\, but gradually other professions also began observing it. \nBy the mid-20th century\, Commerce Day had expanded far beyond its original purpose. Icelanders started using the long weekend for travel\, camping\, and outdoor gatherings\, marking it as the highlight of the summer season. \nToday\, Commerce Day (first Monday of August) is the largest travel and festival weekend in Iceland. While its name still reflects its roots in honoring shopkeepers\, the holiday is now celebrated by all Icelanders as a joyful long weekend of summer fun.

Its origins trace back to 1834\, when enslaved Africans in the British Caribbean were officially emancipated. To mark their freedom\, people across the islands gathered in spontaneous street processions filled with drumming\, singing\, and dancing\, a tradition that evolved into modern-day Carnival. \nIn Antigua and Barbuda\, these early celebrations blended African rhythms\, European masquerade customs\, and local storytelling into a unique art form. By the 1950s\, as the country moved toward greater self-governance\, the government formalized Carnival as a national festival\, officially replacing the old "Emancipation Day" holiday. Carnival Monday\, celebrated on the first Monday in August\, became the grand kickoff to a week of festivities. \nThe day begins with J'ouvert\, a pre-dawn street party where thousands of revelers\, covered in paint\, mud\, or powder\, dance behind steel bands and music trucks through the streets of St. John's. As the morning progresses\, it transitions into the Parade of the Bands\, showcasing elaborately designed costumes\, energetic dance troupes\, and the infectious rhythms of calypso and soca music. \nBeyond its spectacle\, Carnival Monday remains a symbol of freedom\, resilience\, and national pride. It commemorates the emancipation of the ancestors while celebrating the enduring creativity and unity of the Antiguan and Barbudan people—a living expression of their journey from oppression to self-expression.

Thousands of enslaved Africans in the BVI were freed\, laying the foundation for the islands' modern society\, culture\, and identity. \nThe first commemorations of emancipation were solemn occasions\, centered around church services\, prayers\, and community reflection. These gatherings focused on gratitude for freedom and remembrance of the hardships of slavery. \nOver time\, they expanded to include festivities\, music\, and community activities\, evolving into cultural celebrations. \nAs emancipation celebrations grew throughout the 19th and 20th centuries\, the observance moved from a single day to a broader festival. By the mid-20th century\, emancipation in the BVI was marked with parades\, concerts\, fairs\, and cultural displays\, transforming into today's Emancipation Festival. \nTo reflect its significance\, the Virgin Islands government designated multiple public holidays during the first week of August: \nToday\, Emancipation Tuesday continues the celebration begun on Monday. While Monday often features the Grand Parade in Road Town\, Tuesday provides a continuation of the festivities\, ensuring the spirit of emancipation remains at the center of community life.

Its origins trace back to 1834\, when enslaved Africans in the British Caribbean gained their freedom. The joy and defiance expressed in the spontaneous post-emancipation street celebrations evolved over time into organized parades and festivals\, blending African traditions\, European masquerade influences\, and Caribbean creativity. \nBy the mid-20th century\, these grassroots festivities transformed into what is now the Antigua Carnival\, officially inaugurated in 1957. This national festival replaced the traditional Emancipation Day observances but preserved their essence—freedom\, resilience and unity. Carnival Tuesday was established as the culminating day\, showcasing the most spectacular display of artistry and revelry. \nThe day's main attraction is the Parade of the Bands\, where costumed groups\, called "mas bands"\, take over the streets of St. John's in a dazzling procession of feathers\, sequins\, and vibrant fabrics. Each band tells a story through its theme\, choreography and music\, while participants compete for prizes in categories such as "Band of the Year" and "Queen of Carnival". \nBeyond its spectacle\, Carnival Tuesday carries symbolic weight. It celebrates the triumph of freedom over oppression\, the creativity of the Antiguan and Barbudan people\, and the unity of the nation. Each year\, it reaffirms a cultural legacy born from emancipation\, transformed through artistry\, and sustained by a shared sense of pride and joy.

The day marked a turning point in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) history\, laying the foundation for its modern society and culture. \nIn the years following emancipation\, August 1 was commemorated with religious services\, thanksgiving gatherings and community reflection. These early observances were solemn\, focused on remembering slavery's hardships and celebrating newfound freedom. \nBy the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, celebrations expanded beyond church ceremonies\, incorporating music\, dance and food. Over time\, emancipation observances stretched across multiple days\, gradually evolving into today's Emancipation Festival\, the largest annual event in the BVI. \nTo reflect this growth\, the government officially recognized a sequence of three public holidays Emancipation Monday (first Monday in August)\, Emancipation Tuesday (first Tuesday) and Emancipation Wednesday (first Wednesday). \nToday\, Emancipation Wednesday serves as the third and final official public holiday of the festival week. While Monday is best known for the Grand Parade\, Wednesday maintains the festival's rhythm\, closing the official observances with community unity and cultural pride.

SUMMARY:National Women's Day
DESCRIPTION:National Women's Day commemorates the 1956 Women's March to the Union Buildings in Pretoria\, when more than 20\,000 women of all races protested against the apartheid government's pass laws. These laws required Black South Africans to carry pass books (internal passports)\, restricting their movement and reinforcing racial segregation. \nWhen is National Women's Day?\nNational Women's Day is celebrated every year on August 9. \nThe following is the list of National Women's Day from 2020 to 2049. \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n HolidayDateWeekday\n\n\n\n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2020Sunday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2021Monday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2022Tuesday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2023Wednesday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2024Friday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2025Saturday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2026Sunday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2027Monday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2028Wednesday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2029Thursday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2030Friday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2031Saturday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2032Monday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2033Tuesday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2034Wednesday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2035Thursday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2036Saturday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2037Sunday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2038Monday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2039Tuesday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2040Thursday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2041Friday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2042Saturday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2043Sunday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2044Tuesday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2045Wednesday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2046Thursday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2047Friday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2048Sunday \n \n National Women's DayAug 09\, 2049Monday \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nThe History of National Women's Day?\nOn August 9\, 1956\, more than 20\,000 women of all races marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest the apartheid government's pass laws. These laws forced Black South Africans to carry internal passports (known as "passes") that restricted their freedom of movement\, employment and residence. The march was one of the largest demonstrations in South African history at the time. \nThe women delivered petitions to the prime minister's office and then stood in thirty minutes of silent protest—a powerful act of defiance. Afterwards\, they sang "You strike a woman\, you strike a rock"\, a phrase that has since become a symbol of women's resilience and strength in South Africa. \nThe 1956 march was a turning point in the struggle against apartheid\, showing that women were not only victims of discriminatory laws but also leaders in resistance. Their courage challenged both racial oppression and gender inequality\, inspiring future generations to continue the fight for justice. \nAfter the end of apartheid (1948–1994)\, the democratic government declared August 9 as National Women's Day to honour the women who marched in 1956 and to celebrate women's contributions to freedom and equality.

In 1959\, Singapore became a self-governing state\, with Lee Kuan Yew as its first Prime Minister. \nIn 1963\, Singapore merged with Malaysia\, hoping to gain economic and political stability. However\, tensions quickly arose over political ideologies\, racial policies\, and economic disagreements. \nOn August 9\, 1965\, Singapore was expelled from Malaysia and declared an independent republic. \nThe separation was a profound moment: Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's tearful announcement on television captured the uncertainty and emotional weight of independence. \nSingapore's first National Day was celebrated on August 9\, 1966\, marking the first anniversary of independence. \nToday\, National Day is not only about independence but also about reflecting on Singapore's journey from a small island nation to a global hub.

Under Spanish colonial rule from the late 19th century\, the area became part of Spanish Sahara\, along with Laayoune and other southern territories. Following Morocco's independence in 1956\, the country began pursuing the reunification of its historic lands\, aiming to reclaim territories under Spanish control. \nThe turning point came after the Green March of November 1975\, when 350\,000 unarmed Moroccan civilians peacefully marched into the Sahara to affirm Morocco's claim to the region. Spain agreed to withdraw\, and the Madrid Accords (November 14\, 1975) led to the gradual transfer of administrative control to Morocco and Mauritania. \nWhile Mauritania later withdrew from the southern portion in 1979\, Morocco formally reintegrated the Oued Ed-Dahab region into its territory that same year. \nOn August 14\, 1979\, local tribal leaders and representatives of the Oued Ed-Dahab region pledged allegiance to King Hassan II in a public ceremony in Rabat. This event symbolized the return of the region to the Moroccan homeland and reaffirmed the unity between the monarchy and the Saharan tribes. \nThe day became known as Oued Ed-Dahab Day\, commemorating Morocco's continued process of territorial recovery. \nEach year on August 14\, Morocco celebrates Oued Ed-Dahab Day as a national event of unity and sovereignty. It also serves to highlight development efforts in the southern provinces\, reflecting Morocco's ongoing investment in the region.

The day was celebrated as Gwangbokjeol (광복절)\, literally "Restoration of Light Day"\, symbolizing the return of national sovereignty after decades of darkness. \nFollowing liberation\, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel\, with the Soviet Union occupying the North and the United States the South. \nOn August 15\, 1948\, the Republic of Korea (South Korea) was officially established\, with Syngman Rhee as its first president. On the same date\, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) was proclaimed in September 1948. \nThus\, August 15 is tied not only to liberation but also to the birth of the modern Korean state in the South. \nLiberation Day was first celebrated in 1946\, one year after independence. In 1949\, it was officially designated as a national holiday in South Korea\, and it remains one of the country's most important public holidays.

The journey to independence was long and complex\, shaped by resistance\, diplomacy\, and a strong spirit of nationalism. \nDuring the 17th to early 20th centuries\, Indonesia was under Dutch control as part of the Dutch East Indies\, with a brief period of British rule in the early 1800s. In 1942\, during World War II\, Japan occupied Indonesia\, ending Dutch dominance but introducing a new form of control. The Japanese occupation\, however\, played a key role in fostering Indonesian nationalism — it allowed local leaders to organize\, train\, and plan for self-governance. \nAs Japan's defeat in the war became imminent in 1945\, Indonesian leaders Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta seized the opportunity. On August 17\, 1945\, Sukarno read the Proclamation of Independence (Proklamasi Kemerdekaan) at his home in Jakarta\, declaring Indonesia a free and sovereign nation. \nThe declaration was just the beginning\, it triggered the Indonesian National Revolution (1945–1949)\, a four-year struggle against Dutch attempts to reassert control. After diplomatic negotiations and armed conflict\, the Netherlands formally recognized Indonesia's independence on December 27\, 1949. \nToday\, August 17 stands as a symbol of Indonesia's unity\, resilience and the unyielding spirit of its people in their pursuit of freedom and nationhood.

Stephen's reign is considered the birth of the Hungarian state. \nAfter his death in 1038\, Stephen was canonized as a saint in 1083 by Pope Gregory VII. His feast day was set on August 20\, and it became both a religious and national commemoration. Medieval Hungary honored St. Stephen as both a king and a saint\, guardian of the nation. \nDuring the centuries of Ottoman occupation (16th–17th centuries)\, the day remained a religious observance but was less nationally prominent. Under Habsburg rule\, celebrations of St. Stephen's Day were revived as a way to preserve Hungarian national identity. \nBy the 19th century\, August 20 had grown into a national holiday\, symbolizing Hungary's Christian roots and historical continuity. After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918\, the holiday became even more central to Hungarian national pride. \nIn 1949\, under communist rule\, the government tried to suppress its religious significance and rebranded it as Constitution Day\, celebrating the new socialist constitution. \nAfter the fall of communism in 1989\, the holiday was restored to its original form as St. Stephen's Day. It regained its full meaning as Hungary's National Day\, celebrating statehood\, Christianity\, and independence.

Moroccan nationalists increasingly demanded independence and the restoration of sovereignty\, rallying around Sultan Mohammed V\, who supported gradual reforms and resisted colonial control. \nOn August 20\, 1953\, French colonial authorities deposed and exiled Sultan Mohammed V and his family to Corsica\, and later to Madagascar\, for refusing to cooperate with colonial policies. \nThe French replaced him with Ben Arafa\, a puppet ruler with no popular support. The exile of the beloved Sultan was a turning point and it ignited widespread outrage and resistance throughout Morocco. \nFollowing the exile\, violent protests\, strikes and acts of rebellion broke out across the country. Ordinary citizens\, tribal leaders\, and nationalist movements united in what became known as the Revolution of the King and the People (Thawrat al-Malik wa al-Sha'b). \nThis unity between the monarch and his people became a defining symbol of the Moroccan independence struggle. The resistance continued for two years\, marked by political organization\, armed resistance\, and diplomatic pressure on France. \nIn 1955\, under growing international and domestic pressure\, France agreed to negotiate with Moroccan nationalists. King Mohammed V returned triumphantly to Morocco on November 16\, 1955\, greeted by massive crowds. Just months later\, on March 2\, 1956\, Morocco regained its independence from France. \nTo honor the shared sacrifices of the monarchy and the people\, August 20 was declared Revolution of the King and the People Day\, often shortened to Revolution Day. The holiday celebrates the unity\, loyalty and patriotism that led to Morocco's liberation and continues to define its national identity. \nRevolution Day symbolizes the unbreakable bond between the King and the Moroccan people. It represents resistance against oppression\, the triumph of unity\, and Morocco's enduring commitment to independence and progress.

Growing opposition emerged within Slovakia\, especially among communists\, democrats\, nationalists\, and the Slovak army. \nOn August 29\, 1944\, the Slovak National Uprising (Slovenské národné povstanie – SNP) was launched from Banská Bystrica. It was organized by the Slovak resistance movement\, supported by both communists and democrats\, along with officers from the Slovak army. \nThe uprising sought to overthrow the fascist Slovak regime and resist German occupation. At its peak\, around 60\,000–80\,000 partisans and soldiers joined the fight\, with additional support from Allied and Soviet forces. \nDespite strong resistance\, the uprising was eventually suppressed by German troops\, and Banská Bystrica was retaken in late October 1944. \nAlthough militarily defeated\, the uprising became a powerful symbol of resistance\, unity\, and the fight for freedom. It demonstrated that many Slovaks opposed fascism and aligned themselves with the anti-Nazi struggle in Europe. \nAfter WWII\, the uprising was honored as a defining moment in Slovak history. In 1945\, memorials were built\, and in 1949 the Slovak National Uprising Memorial in Banská Bystrica was established. \nDuring socialist Czechoslovakia\, the uprising was celebrated but often framed through a communist lens. \nSince Slovakia's independence in 1993\, August 29 has been preserved as National Uprising Day (Deň Slovenského národného povstania)\, recognized as a public holiday.

The Act formally established specific public holidays for bank employees\, who previously had very few days off. Initially\, the Summer Bank Holiday was observed on the first Monday in August across England\, Wales\, and the Channel Islands\, including Jersey. \nThe purpose was to give workers\, especially those in urban and industrial areas\, a chance to enjoy a late-summer break\, ideally outdoors\, during one of the warmest times of the year. \nIn 1971\, the Banking and Financial Dealings Act standardized and updated bank holidays in the UK. As part of this reform\, the Summer Bank Holiday was moved from the first Monday to the last Monday in August in England\, Wales\, and Jersey. \nAs a Crown Dependency\, Jersey generally follows the United Kingdom's system of bank holidays\, though each holiday is formally approved under local law. The Summer Bank Holiday was adopted in Jersey in line with these UK changes\, maintaining the island's close cultural and economic ties with Britain. \nThe Summer Bank Holiday in Jersey is now a secular\, leisure-oriented holiday rather than a religious or political one. Many islanders use the long weekend to relax\, take short breaks\, or enjoy outdoor activities like beach outings\, picnics\, and local festivals.

The Act officially established several fixed holidays for banks and businesses\, designed to provide working people with regular days of rest during the year. \nOriginally\, the August bank holiday was held on the first Monday in August\, coinciding with local fairs\, markets and harvest celebrations across Britain. However\, in England\, Wales\, and Gibraltar\, the date was later changed to the last Monday in August to better distribute holidays through the year and extend the summer break. Scotland retained the first Monday in August as its holiday\, showing how regional variations developed within the UK and its territories. \nAs a British Overseas Territory\, Gibraltar followed the UK's public holiday calendar closely. The Late Summer Bank Holiday was formally adopted in the mid-20th century\, alongside other UK-based holidays such as the Spring Bank Holiday and King's Birthday. \nIts introduction reflected Gibraltar's integration into the British administrative and cultural system\, including shared observances and traditions. Over time\, the holiday became a valued part of Gibraltar's modern public calendar\, offering a break during the hottest part of the year. \nThe holiday was not established to commemorate a historical event but to promote rest\, leisure\, and well-being for workers. It provides a seasonal balance in the holiday calendar\, giving residents a pause between the busy spring and autumn periods. \nToday\, the Late Summer Bank Holiday in Gibraltar is a non-religious\, community-oriented holiday\, marked by relaxation and informal celebrations.

However\, political and cultural differences between Czechs and Slovaks grew\, with many Slovaks seeking greater autonomy. \nOn September 1\, 1992\, the Slovak National Council (parliament) adopted the Constitution of the Slovak Republic in Bratislava. This was a crucial step toward independence\, as it provided the legal foundation for governing an independent state. \nJust a few months later\, Czechoslovak leaders Václav Klaus (Czech) and Vladimír Mečiar (Slovak) agreed on a peaceful split of Czechoslovakia. \nOn January 1\, 1993\, the Slovak Republic officially became an independent nation. The 1992 constitution became its founding legal document. \nSeptember 1 was designated as Constitution Day (Deň Ústavy Slovenskej republiky)\, honoring the adoption of the constitution. It is recognized as one of the country's most important state holidays\, symbolizing the birth of Slovakia's democracy and sovereignty.

At the time\, the workforce was divided along racial and economic lines—white Bermudians largely held managerial roles\, while Black Bermudians faced limited opportunities and systemic barriers. \nThe rise of unions became central to improving workers' rights. Under the leadership of figures\, the Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) expanded its influence and organized major strikes in the 1960s and 1970s\, demanding better wages\, equal treatment\, and social justice. These movements laid the groundwork for broader political and economic reforms across the island. \nIn recognition of these efforts\, the Bermuda government officially declared Labour Day a public holiday in 1982. The date was set to align with the North American observance of Labour Day\, symbolizing solidarity with international workers' movements while maintaining a uniquely Bermudian character. \nThe holiday was intended not only to celebrate labor achievements but also to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for fair treatment and equality. It quickly became one of Bermuda's most important civic holidays\, reflecting both gratitude for progress and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for social and economic justice. \nOver time\, Labour Day has evolved into more than just a labor rally—it has become a day of community celebration and reflection. Today\, Labour Day in Bermuda stands as a tribute to the resilience and solidarity of Bermudian workers. It honors the activists who challenged injustice and built a foundation for fairer labor relations\, while also serving as a reminder of the importance of equality\, respect and opportunity in the workplace.

The colony provided Portugal with immense wealth through sugar\, gold\, and later coffee\, but it was tightly controlled politically and economically from Lisbon. \nIn 1808\, a major shift occurred when the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil following Napoleon's invasion of Portugal. King Dom João VI relocated the Portuguese court to Rio de Janeiro\, transforming the colony into the seat of the Portuguese Empire. This unprecedented move elevated Brazil's status and fueled the growth of local culture\, commerce and political institutions. \nWhen Napoleon was defeated\, Dom João VI returned to Portugal in 1821\, leaving his son\, Dom Pedro de Alcântara\, as regent in Brazil. However\, Portuguese leaders sought to reduce Brazil back to colonial status\, revoking many of the freedoms it had gained. \nFaced with growing unrest and pressure from nationalist groups\, Dom Pedro sided with Brazilian reformists. On September 7\, 1822\, while traveling near the Ipiranga River in São Paulo\, he received orders from Lisbon demanding his return and Brazil's subjugation. In response\, he drew his sword and declared "Independence or Death!". \nThis event\, known as Cry of Ipiranga\, symbolized Brazil's break from Portugal. Rather than descending into widespread warfare as in other Latin American independence movements\, Brazil's transition was relatively peaceful. \nFollowing the declaration\, Dom Pedro was proclaimed Emperor Pedro I of Brazil on October 12\, 1822\, establishing the Empire of Brazil\, a constitutional monarchy. Portugal officially recognized Brazilian independence in 1825\, after diplomatic negotiations mediated by Great Britain. \nBrazil remained an empire for 67 years until 1889\, when the monarchy was overthrown and the Republic of Brazil was proclaimed. Nonetheless\, September 7 continued to be celebrated as the nation's official Independence Day\, symbolizing both freedom and continuity. \nIndependence Day remains a powerful symbol of national pride\, unity and sovereignty. It celebrates not only the political break from colonial rule but also the enduring spirit of a diverse nation that forged its identity through resilience\, cultural richness\, and the pursuit of liberty.

At that time\, Spain was pressuring Britain to hand over Gibraltar\, claiming sovereignty based on geographic proximity and historical treaties. \nThe United Nations had urged both countries to negotiate Gibraltar's future\, but the people of Gibraltar firmly believed in their right to self-determination. \nIn response\, the British Government organized a referendum to ask the people directly: Do you wish to pass under Spanish sovereignty? Or do you wish to remain under British sovereignty\, with self-governing institutions? \nThe result was overwhelming\, 12\,138 voted to remain British\, while only 44 voted for Spanish rule. This historic vote demonstrated Gibraltar's unwavering loyalty to the United Kingdom and its determination to govern its own affairs. \nDespite the importance of the 1967 referendum\, Gibraltar did not begin celebrating it as a public holiday until much later. In 1992\, local activist Joseph Bossano\, then Chief Minister\, and Peter Montegriffo\, leader of the GSD\, jointly proposed that September 10 be recognized annually as Gibraltar National Day. \nThe first official National Day celebration took place in 1992\, marking the 25th anniversary of the referendum. \nSince its inception\, Gibraltar National Day has become the most important public celebration of the year. The entire territory is decorated in red and white\, the national colors. \nToday\, Gibraltar National Day (September 10) is a public holiday and a symbol of unity and pride. The day concludes with fireworks over the Rock\, echoing the joy and spirit of the people who proudly call Gibraltar home.

By the late 18th and early 19th centuries\, growing discontent spread among creoles (Mexicans of Spanish descent born in the Americas)\, indigenous peoples\, and mestizos. \nSocial inequality\, economic hardship and limited opportunities under Spanish rule fueled a desire for self-government and independence. Influenced by the Enlightenment\, the American Revolution (1776)\, and the French Revolution (1789)\, reform-minded leaders in New Spain began to envision freedom from colonial control. \nThe spark for independence came on the night of September 15–16\, 1810\, in the small town of Dolores (now Dolores Hidalgo)\, in the state of Guanajuato. Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla\, a parish priest and advocate for social justice\, rang the church bell in the early hours of September 16 and delivered his historic speech\, now known as the "Cry of Dolores". This moment marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. \nThe war was long and brutal\, lasting 11 years\, with shifting alliances and regional uprisings. Although Father Hidalgo was captured and executed in 1811\, his call for freedom continued to inspire others. José María Morelos later formalized the fight for independence\, declaring Mexico's sovereignty in 1813. \nThe struggle finally ended with the Treaty of Córdoba\, signed on August 24\, 1821\, recognizing Mexico's independence from Spain. The Army of the Three Guarantees triumphantly entered Mexico City on September 27\, 1821. While independence was achieved\, the years that followed brought new challenges as Mexico sought to define its identity and government. \nThe first official Independence Day celebrations took place in 1825\, honoring Father Hidalgo and the heroes of the revolution. Although the war ended in 1821\, September 16\, the day of the Grito de Dolores\, was chosen as Mexico's national holiday\, symbolizing the start of the movement rather than its conclusion.

Inspired by workers' rights movements in Europe and North America\, especially the Haymarket Affair\, Australian labourers began pushing for better conditions and shorter working hours. \nThe most significant event in Australia's labour history was the Eight-Hour Workday Movement. On April 21\, 1856\, stonemasons in Melbourne walked off the job and marched to Parliament House to demand 8 hours of work\, 8 hours of rest\, 8 hours of leisure\, without a pay cut. \nAfter negotiations\, Victoria became one of the first places in the world to adopt the eight-hour workday. The success in Melbourne inspired workers across Australia to demand similar rights. \nFollowing the success of the Melbourne stonemasons\, the eight-hour workday was gradually adopted in other states. To commemorate the victories of workers\, Australian states began recognizing Labour Day as a public holiday at different times. \nToday\, May Day is still observed as a public holiday\, but activism has decreased. People now use the long weekend for leisure and shopping. \n \nWhat Do People Do on This Day?\nMay Day is a public holiday in Northern Territory\, Australia that gives many people a day off to relax and celebrate the achievements of the workers' movement. \nIn some states\, trade unions and workers' groups organize marches and rallies to commemorate the struggles for workers' rights. Many cities host free entertainment\, music and cultural events. Some areas celebrate with fireworks\, especially in Western Australia and Victoria. Many May Day festivals include concerts featuring local artists. \nBecause May Day falls on a Monday\, it creates a long weekend\, and many people use the extra day off on short trips or vacations to travel\, or spend time with families. \nWhat was the Haymarket Affair?\nThe Haymarket Affair\, also known as the Haymarket Riot\, was a significant event in the history of labour movements\, occurring on May 4\, 1886\, in Chicago\, Illinois\, USA. It became a pivotal moment for labour rights across the world and played a key role in the establishment of Labour Day on May 1st. \nWorkers often faced long hours\, low pay\, and dangerous working conditions in the late 19th century. Labour unions were fighting for an eight-hour workday\, among other rights. On May 4\, 1886\, a peaceful rally was held at Haymarket Square in Chicago to support workers striking for an eight-hour day and to protest the killing and wounding of several workers by the police during a strike the previous day. \nAs the rally was winding down\, and after a heavy police presence arrived\, an unknown person threw a bomb at the police. The bomb blast and ensuing gunfire resulted in the death of several police officers and civilians. The events that followed were marked by a sensationalized trial. Eight anarchists were arrested and charged with conspiracy connected to the bombing. Despite a lack of direct evidence linking them to the bomb\, seven were sentenced to death and one to a long prison term. Four were executed\, one committed suicide\, and the remaining three were eventually pardoned. \nThe Haymarket Affair became a symbol of the struggle for workers' rights. It highlighted the growing tensions between labour and capital in the industrializing United States. The affair remains an important historical event\, symbolizing the struggle for workers' rights and contributing to the development of labour movement globally.

Syria's major loss was the Golan Heights\, a strategic mountainous region. The defeat was a deep national trauma and a rallying point for future resistance. \nOver the following years\, Syria and Egypt prepared a joint military campaign. Their aim was to surprise Israel\, reclaim lost territory\, and restore Arab military credibility. \nThe attack was planned for October 6\, 1973\, during Yom Kippur\, the holiest day in Judaism\, and during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. \nOn October 6\, 1973\, Syrian forces attacked the Israeli-held Golan Heights\, while Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal into Sinai. Syrian troops made initial gains in the Golan\, regaining several strategic positions. \n"Tishreen" refers to the Arabic name for October (Tishreen al-Awal). \nDespite these early successes\, Israel counterattacked and pushed back Syrian forces. A UN-brokered ceasefire ended the war on October 25\, 1973. \nAlthough Syria did not fully regain the Golan Heights\, the war marked a symbolic victory restored Arab military pride after the humiliation of 1967\, and strengthened Syria's identity as a resistance state. \nFor Syria\, the war became a national symbol of resilience and sacrifice\, and the day honors all those who fought and died in the battle for Syria's sovereignty.
