At that time\, Spain was pressuring Britain to hand over Gibraltar\, claiming sovereignty based on geographic proximity and historical treaties. \nThe United Nations had urged both countries to negotiate Gibraltar's future\, but the people of Gibraltar firmly believed in their right to self-determination. \nIn response\, the British Government organized a referendum to ask the people directly: Do you wish to pass under Spanish sovereignty? Or do you wish to remain under British sovereignty\, with self-governing institutions? \nThe result was overwhelming\, 12\,138 voted to remain British\, while only 44 voted for Spanish rule. This historic vote demonstrated Gibraltar's unwavering loyalty to the United Kingdom and its determination to govern its own affairs. \nDespite the importance of the 1967 referendum\, Gibraltar did not begin celebrating it as a public holiday until much later. In 1992\, local activist Joseph Bossano\, then Chief Minister\, and Peter Montegriffo\, leader of the GSD\, jointly proposed that September 10 be recognized annually as Gibraltar National Day. \nThe first official National Day celebration took place in 1992\, marking the 25th anniversary of the referendum. \nSince its inception\, Gibraltar National Day has become the most important public celebration of the year.
