However\, political and cultural differences between Czechs and Slovaks grew\, with many Slovaks seeking greater autonomy. \nOn September 1\, 1992\, the Slovak National Council (parliament) adopted the Constitution of the Slovak Republic in Bratislava. This was a crucial step toward independence\, as it provided the legal foundation for governing an independent state. \nJust a few months later\, Czechoslovak leaders Václav Klaus (Czech) and Vladimír Mečiar (Slovak) agreed on a peaceful split of Czechoslovakia. \nOn January 1\, 1993\, the Slovak Republic officially became an independent nation. The 1992 constitution became its founding legal document. \nSeptember 1 was designated as Constitution Day (Deň Ústavy Slovenskej republiky)\, honoring the adoption of the constitution. It is recognized as one of the country's most important state holidays\, symbolizing the birth of Slovakia's democracy and sovereignty.
