Over the centuries\, British-appointed governors ruled The Bahamas\, and political power remained in the hands of a small elite. The majority Black population was politically and economically marginalized. \nIn June 1942\, the Burma Road Riot took place in Nassau\, The Bahamas\, which is a major labor protest by Black Bahamian workers demanding fair wages and rights. \nIn 1953 the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) was formed\, which is the first political party to challenge the ruling elite. \nIn 1962\, the introduction of universal adult suffrage which allowed women and men could vote equally. \nIn 1967\, the landmark general election brought Majority Rule\, with the PLP\, led by Sir Lynden Pindling\, forming the first Black-led government. \nIn 1972\, the Bahamas held constitutional talks with the United Kingdom about full independence. \nOn July 10\, 1973\, The Bahamas officially gained independence from Britain. A midnight ceremony was held in Nassau\, where the Union Jack was lowered\, and the new Bahamian national flag was raised for the first time. \nSir Lynden Pindling became the first Prime Minister of the newly independent Bahamas. The Bahamas became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations\, with the British monarch remaining as ceremonial head of state.
