Expanded self-governance came in 1904\, when Iceland gained executive power through its own minister residing in Reykjavík. \nIn 1918\, the Act of Union recognized Iceland as a sovereign state in personal union with Denmark\, sharing the same king but managing its own internal affairs. \nWith Denmark occupied by Germany during World War II\, Iceland took the opportunity to move toward full independence. \nOn June 17\, 1944\, Iceland formally declared itself a republic\, ending its union with Denmark.
