Each region with a strong identity could create its own Statute of Autonomy\, which laid the basis for self-government. \nCastilla–La Mancha\, a vast central region of Spain formed by the provinces of Albacete\, Ciudad Real\, Cuenca\, Guadalajara\, and Toledo\, began this process soon after the Constitution. \nOn August 10\, 1982\, the Statute of Autonomy of Castilla–La Mancha was approved by the Spanish Cortes. \nThis statute formally established Castilla–La Mancha as an autonomous community\, granting it political institutions such as a Regional Assembly\, Presidency\, and Government Council. \nIt also recognized the region's cultural and historical identity\, deeply tied to the heritage of La Mancha and Don Quixote. \nThe first Regional Parliament of Castilla–La Mancha and its institutions were inaugurated on May 31\, 1983\, in Toledo\, the historic capital. \nTo commemorate this foundational moment of modern self-government\, May 31 was declared the Day of Castilla–La Mancha.
