Over 300\,000 Tajiks were conscripted into the Red Army\, and nearly 92\,000 died\, and tens of thousands more were wounded or never returned. \nThough Tajikistan was far from the frontlines\, the republic contributed agricultural products\, raw materials\, and industrial goods to the Soviet war effort. \nVictory over Nazi Germany on May 9\, 1945\, was celebrated across the USSR\, including in Tajikistan\, as a day of national triumph and mourning. \nIn 1945\, May 9 was officially declared as Victory Day by the Soviet Union. Tajik SSR began commemorating the day with military parades\, ceremonies\, and honors for veterans. \nIn 1965\, Victory Day was declared a non-working public holiday across the USSR to mark the 20th anniversary of victory. \nAfter the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991\, Tajikistan retained May 9 as an official public holiday. The country continued to celebrate the heroism of WWII veterans\, many of whom were still alive in the 1990s. \nVictory Day also gained deeper meaning as Tajikistan emerged from its own civil war (1992–1997)\, reinforcing themes of peace and resilience.

The German occupation began on July 1\, 1940\, after the British government decided the islands were indefensible and evacuated most military forces. \nFor nearly five years\, islanders lived under strict German rule\, facing curfews\, food shortages\, forced labor\, censorship\, and deportations. The occupation deeply affected everyday life\, though many islanders maintained quiet resistance and hope for eventual liberation. \nOn May 8\, 1945\, Germany officially surrendered\, marking Victory in Europe (VE) Day. The next morning\, May 9\, British liberation forces arrived in St. Helier Harbour\, Jersey's capital. The Union Flag was raised again over the island\, symbolizing the end of occupation and the return of freedom. The same day\, Guernsey was also liberated; Alderney and Sark followed shortly after. \nMay 9 was declared Liberation Day\, becoming Jersey's national day of celebration and remembrance. It replaced the traditional May Day festivities as the island's most significant public holiday. \nLiberation Day honors both the joy of freedom and the endurance of those who lived through the occupation—including islanders who were deported\, imprisoned\, or separated from loved ones.

In his declaration\, Schuman proposed uniting Europe's coal and steel industries under a single authority to prevent future wars—an idea that became the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951. This initiative laid the foundation for the modern European Union\, promoting peace\, stability\, and economic cooperation after the devastation of World War II. \nLuxembourg was one of the six founding members of the ECSC (along with France\, Germany\, Italy\, Belgium\, and the Netherlands). Its strategic location and strong support for European integration made it a key player in the early development of the European project. \nAlthough Europe Day was recognized across the EU as a day of European unity since 1985\, it wasn't a public holiday in most countries. \nIn 2019\, Luxembourg became the first EU member state to officially designate May 9 as a public holiday. \nThe move reflected the country's deep commitment to European integration and honored Robert Schuman's legacy as a founding father of the EU. For Luxembourg\, Europe Day is more than a celebration\, it's a reminder of the nation's historic contribution to European unity.

The war became one of the deadliest and most decisive conflicts in human history\, claiming the lives of over 27 million Soviet citizens\, both military and civilian. \nDespite the enormous loss and devastation\, the Soviet Union played a crucial role in defeating Nazi Germany\, with landmark battles such as Stalingrad (1942–1943) and Kursk (1943) turning the tide in favor of the Allies. The final Soviet offensive ended with the capture of Berlin in May 1945. \nOn May 8\, 1945\, Germany signed an act of unconditional surrender in Reims\, France\, marking the end of the war in Europe. However\, because of time zone differences\, the surrender took effect in Moscow after midnight\, on May 9. Thus\, the Soviet Union declared May 9\, 1945\, as Victory Day. The next day\, Joseph Stalin announced the victory to the Soviet people\, and massive celebrations erupted across Moscow and other cities. \nIn 1946\, May 9 became an official holiday\, though it was not yet a public day off. During the late 1940s and 1950s\, official celebrations were subdued. Veterans\, however\, continued to observe the day privately\, visiting war memorials and honoring fallen comrades. \nIn 1965\, on the 20th anniversary of victory\, Leonid Brezhnev restored Victory Day as a major state holiday and declared it a non-working day across the USSR. In the 1970s and 1980s\, Victory Day became one of the most significant Soviet holidays. \nThe 1985\, 40th anniversary saw massive celebrations and recognition of war veterans as heroes of the nation. \nFollowing the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991\, newly independent republics adopted their own forms of remembrance\, but Russia retained May 9 as its principal Victory Day holiday. In modern Russia\, the day serves both as a commemoration of sacrifice and a display of national strength and continuity.
