Traditional customs included maypole dancing\, crowning the May Queen\, and village gatherings. \nBy the late 19th century\, May 1 also became associated with International Workers' Day\, a global commemoration of labor rights inspired by the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago. Across Europe\, including the British Isles\, it symbolized workers' solidarity and the movement for fair wages and shorter hours. \nIn 1978\, the United Kingdom officially established the Early May Bank Holiday as a national public holiday\, held on the first Monday in May. As a Crown Dependency\, Jersey adopted this public holiday into its own calendar around the same time\, aligning with the UK's schedule but observing it under local jurisdiction. \nWhile its origins are rooted in the labor movement\, the Early May Bank Holiday in Jersey gradually lost its political focus. Instead\, it evolved into a celebration of springtime\, outdoor leisure\, and the start of the island's tourist season. \nToday\, the Early May Bank Holiday is seen as a non-political spring holiday in Jersey\, a time to rest\, enjoy the outdoors\, and mark the transition from spring to summer.

However\, this independence was short-lived. \nIn June 1940\, under the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union\, Latvia was occupied and annexed by the USSR. The following decades brought mass deportations\, political repression\, and suppression of Latvian culture and identity. \nBy the late 1980s\, the Soviet Union began to weaken. These reforms gave rise to national movements across the Baltic States (Estonia\, Latvia\, and Lithuania) calling for greater autonomy and eventually full independence. \nIn Latvia\, the Popular Front of Latvia\, founded in 1988\, became the main political force advocating for sovereignty. The movement emphasized peaceful protest\, national unity\, and cultural revival\, symbolized by the restoration of the Latvian flag\, language\, and songs of freedom. \nOn August 23\, 1989\, approximately two million people from Latvia\, Lithuania\, and Estonia joined hands to form a 600-kilometer human chain known as the Baltic Way\, spanning from Vilnius to Tallinn. \nOn May 4\, 1990\, the Supreme Council of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic convened in Riga and passed the Declaration "On the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia". The document declared that Latvia's 1940 annexation by the USSR was illegal\, and it restored the authority of the 1922 Latvian Constitution. \nAlthough the May 4 declaration marked the legal restoration of independence\, the transition was gradual. The Soviet Union initially refused to recognize the declaration\, and tensions escalated throughout 1990–1991. After the failed Moscow coup in August 1991\, Latvia finally regained full de facto independence on August 21\, 1991\, completing the process that began on May 4\, 1990. \nIndependence Restoration Day is one of Latvia's most important civic observances\, symbolizing peaceful resistance\, national unity and the triumph of democracy.

Its origins date back to the early 20th century\, when labourers\, particularly sugar estate workers\, faced harsh working conditions\, long hours and low wages under colonial rule. These hardships gave rise to one of the Caribbean's earliest and most influential labour movements. \nIn the 1930s and 1940s\, the call for better wages and fair treatment grew stronger. The formation of the Antigua Trades and Labour Union (ATLU) in 1939\, led by Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr.\, marked a turning point. The ATLU became a powerful voice for the working class and played a major role in shaping both the country's labour policies and its political future. \nThe first Labour Day celebration took place on May 1\, 1951\, when workers took the day off and gathered for marches and speeches demanding recognition of their rights. Their determination prompted the government to formally designate Labour Day as a public holiday soon after\, making Antigua and Barbuda one of the first Caribbean nations to do so. \nOver time\, the day evolved beyond its union roots into a broader celebration of national unity\, workers' contributions\, and political expression. It remains a day for rallies\, speeches\, parades\, and family festivities\, often featuring performances and beach events. \nToday\, Labour Day continues to honour the sacrifices and achievements of the workers who helped build modern Antigua and Barbuda\, standing as both a tribute to the island's labour pioneers and a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of social and economic equality.
