The most significant event was the Haymarket affair in Chicago (1886)\, where workers striking for an eight-hour workday were violently repressed. Following this\, May 1 became a day of international solidarity for workers and was adopted worldwide as International Workers' Day. \nBy the late 19th and early 20th century\, Serbia had growing industrial centers and an emerging working class. \nInfluenced by global labor movements\, Serbian workers and trade unions began marking May 1 with demonstrations demanding better wages\, shorter hours\, and improved working conditions. These early observances often had a political character\, as workers sought both social and national rights. \nAfter World War II\, Serbia became part of socialist Yugoslavia (1945–1990s) under Josip Broz Tito. Labour Day (Praznik rada) became one of the most important state holidays. It symbolized not only the workers' struggle but also the unity of Yugoslavia's peoples under socialism. \nAfter the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s\, Serbia continued to celebrate Labour Day\, but the political dimension declined. Today\, it is primarily seen as a holiday of rest\, family and leisure\, although trade unions still use the occasion to call attention to workers' rights and economic issues. \nLabour Day in Serbia is a two-day public holiday (May 1–2)\, with widespread picnics\, barbecues\, and cultural festivities.

The immediate cause was the attempt by the French to transfer the remaining members of the Spanish royal family out of Madrid. \nCrowds gathered at the Royal Palace\, and when violence broke out\, citizens armed themselves with whatever weapons they could find such as tones and even household tools to resist the French. \nFighting spread across the city\, with civilians\, artisans and even women joining the resistance. \nThe French brutally repressed the uprising\, executing hundreds of Madrileños by firing squad the next day (famously depicted in Francisco de Goya's painting The Third of May 1808). \nThough the revolt failed militarily\, it became a symbol of national resistance against foreign occupation. The events of May 2 sparked the Spanish War of Independence (1808–1814)\, during which Spain\, with British and Portuguese support\, eventually expelled French forces. \nThroughout the 19th century\, the heroes of May 2 were remembered through monuments\, processions\, and public ceremonies. \nWith the creation of Spain's autonomous communities in 1983\, the Community of Madrid chose May 2 as its official holiday. It honors both the historic uprising and the modern identity of Madrid as an autonomous region within Spain.
