Togo became known as a model German colony\, with infrastructure developed primarily for export. \nIn 1916\, after Germany's defeat in World War I\, the League of Nations divided Togoland into British Togoland (later integrated into Ghana) and French Togoland\, which remained under French control. \nFrench Togoland was administered as a League of Nations mandate\, then a UN Trust Territory after WWII. During the 1950s\, France allowed limited self-government under pressure from independence movements across Africa. \nIn 1956\, a referendum gave French Togoland autonomy under French oversight. \nOn April 27\, 1960\, France granted full independence to Togo\, and the country became the Togolese Republic. Olympio became Togo's first president in 1961 after the country adopted its own constitution.

They faced forced removals\, segregated education\, restrictions on movement and systemic discrimination. Opposition came from liberation movements like the African National Congress (ANC)\, the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC)\, and grassroots resistance\, often met with violent repression. \nBy the late 1980s\, apartheid faced growing internal resistance and international pressure through sanctions and boycotts. In 1990\, Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years in prison\, signaling the beginning of negotiations. Multi-party talks led to the dismantling of apartheid laws and preparations for democratic elections. \nOn April 27\, 1994\, South Africa held its first democratic elections\, open to all races. Millions of South Africans\, many voting for the first time in their lives\, stood in long lines to cast their ballots. \nThe elections marked the official end of apartheid. The African National Congress (ANC) won the majority\, and Nelson Mandela was elected the first Black President of South Africa. \nTo commemorate this historic turning point\, the new democratic government declared April 27 as Freedom Day\, a national public holiday. First celebrated in 1995\, it honors both the liberation struggle and the achievement of democracy.

Slovenians faced repression\, forced assimilation\, deportations\, and executions under the occupying powers. \nOn April 27\, 1941\, Slovenian political and cultural groups came together in Ljubljana to form the Liberation Front of the Slovenian People (Osvobodilna fronta – OF). \nThe coalition included communists\, Christian socialists\, Sokols (a nationalist gymnastic group)\, and liberal intellectuals. Its goal was to organize resistance against the occupiers and to fight for the freedom of Slovenia. \nThe OF coordinated armed resistance and eventually joined forces with the broader Yugoslav Partisan movement\, led by Josip Broz Tito. \nSlovenian Partisans played a major role in disrupting Axis operations and protecting civilians. The resistance became a central part of Slovenia's identity in the fight against fascism. \nAfter WWII\, the date April 27 was chosen as Resistance Day (Dan upora proti okupatorju) to honor the creation of the Liberation Front. \nIt symbolized unity\, defiance\, and the will to resist foreign domination. Even after Slovenia's independence in 1991\, the holiday remained important as a marker of national resilience and pride.

In the late 18th century\, the British helped establish Freetown as a home for freed slaves from Britain\, North America\, and the Caribbean. \nIn 1808\, Freetown officially became a British Crown Colony\, and in 1896 the surrounding interior was declared a British Protectorate. This dual colonial structure (colony + protectorate) remained in place until independence. \nDuring the 20th century\, Sierra Leoneans increasingly demanded political participation and self-rule. After World War II\, African nationalism surged\, and in Sierra Leone this was led by political groups. \nIn the 1950s\, Britain introduced gradual reforms\, including elections and greater local self-governance. By 1958\, the SLPP under Sir Milton Margai had become the dominant political force\, guiding the transition to independence. \nAfter constitutional negotiations in London and Freetown\, an agreement was reached to grant Sierra Leone full sovereignty. \nOn April 27\, 1961\, Sierra Leone officially gained independence from Britain. The Union Jack was lowered\, and the new Sierra Leone national flag was raised in Brookfields Stadium\, Freetown. \nIndependence was celebrated with parades\, cultural performances\, and national pride\, symbolizing a fresh chapter in Sierra Leone's history.
