Tanganyika gained independence on December 9\, 1961\, under President Julius Nyerere\, and became a republic in 1962. \n– Zanzibar was historically ruled by Arab sultans and a hub of Indian Ocean trade\, and it became a British protectorate in the 19th century. Zanzibar gained independence on December 10\, 1963\, as a constitutional monarchy under Sultan Jamshid bin Abdullah. Just weeks later\, on January 12\, 1964\, the Zanzibar Revolution overthrew the sultanate. Abeid Amani Karume became president of the newly declared People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba. \nOn April 22\, 1964\, Tanganyika and Zanzibar signed the Articles of Union\, a legal agreement for political integration. \nOn April 26\, 1964\, the union was officially declared. The new country was initially called the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar\, but it was renamed "Tanzania" later that year\, a blend of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. \nOn that same date\, April 26 was declared a national holiday\, now known as Union Day (Siku ya Muungano)\, to be observed annually across the country.
