Dawda Kairaba Jawara became the country's Prime Minister. \nIn July 1964\, a constitutional conference was held at Marlborough House in London between Gambian and British representatives. \nAs a result\, the Gambia Independence Act 1964 was passed by the British Parliament\, setting February 18\, 1965 as the official independence date. On this day\, The Gambia became a constitutional monarchy\, remaining part of the Commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. \nIn 1970\, a national referendum was held to determine whether The Gambia should become a republic. The majority voted yes\, and The Gambia abolished the monarchy\, becoming a republic with Dawda Jawara as its first President.
